House: the musical?

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Dec 4th 2007 11:43AM
HouseFirst Buffy, then Scrubs, eventually Ugly Betty and maybe House? TV Guide reports that the cast of FOX's House would like to do a musical episode. Jennifer Morrison, who plays Allison Cameron, claims that since most of the actors on the show have some sort of musical background, they have been poking the writers to have the doctors break into song!

Here is a small glimpse at the cast's musical experience:
  • Lisa Edelstein authored, composed and performed in the AIDS-related musical Positive Me.
  • Omar Epps was a member of a rap group called Wolfpak and was a back-up dancer for Queen Latifah.
  • Hugh Laurie performs as part of Band on TV, he plays piano and appeared in Spice World.
  • Jennifer Morrison did musical theater, played clarinet in her high school's marching and symphonic bands and sang in the choir.
  • Robert Sean Leonard performed on Broadway.
  • Jesse Spenser performs as part of Band on TV, sang a song on the Uptown Girls' soundtrack, was in an Australian boys choir and plays violin, guitar, bass and the piano.
As Jennifer Morrison told TV Guide, "I'm sure it would be a very sarcastic musical." House is not part of my TV watch list (I can't watch everything but I do watch when it's reruns time) but I would definitely tune in if there was a musical episode just to see how the writers would make it believable and what types of songs they come up with.

I think a musical would be great. And for an original idea, Dr. House could just be in the mood to sing and ignore everyone else unless they sung too. Maybe the guest star can be Simon Cowell and they can do a tie-in with Idol.

You can add drums and the didgeridoo to the list of instruments Jesse Spencer plays. Also, he did 3 songs on the Uptown Girls soundtrack, not one (though he probably only would want to claim one since his character was a one-hit wonder kind of cheesey pop star). If it took a musical episode to get Chase back on screen, I'm all for it! LOL

Chicago Hope had a musical ep some time ago. One of the characters, I forget who, was having some medical issues and hallucinated the rest of the cast singing tunes to him. It was a pretty amusing set up. I wouldn't mind a hallucinating patient doing the same on House. I know Scrubs just did it, but as long as it's well done, it's OK with me. I'm all for one weird hour of television.

i think its a great idea. they could make it believable if it was the patients point of view. like he/she has a disease and is sorta thinking everyone is singing instead of talking, so it wouldnt be that unrealistic :) he/she could have seizures or hallucinations in 'real life' and after he/she is cured nobody sings anymore. haha. i would love a musical episode.

I was going to suggest just that, Franzi, but you beat me to it...

However, if I may be so bold as to suggest:

A patient who cannot understand anything spoken or written to him/her, only sung, forcing the doctors, still in character to SING to the patient to get him/her to understand his diagnosis. This amuses House so much that he requires everyone to sing - as best as their character (not the actor/actress) can, in a style that the character likes. Bring the funny with, say Dr. Foreman having a thing for nursery rhymes or opera. And maybe we can find out a musical secret or two about a few of the characters (say Thirteen and maybe House himself, hmmm?)? Oh, the possibilities!

This idea would allow for a reason why the patient is being diagnosed by the House team, take the characters out of their comfort zones - but not out of character - and allow House to screw with everybody. In addition, some believe that music is a window to the higher truths of the soul. Certainly, the effort of singing everything would distract one from the effort of lying about something, wouldn't it? And that is a proven House tactic, isn't it?

To me, it sounds like the best idea ever. The show has had a lot of dream sequences and hallucinations, I'm sure that they could rationally explain a few musical numbers. With enough hard work, they really could make this a standout episode. Look at Once More With Feeling! I can't stop watching that! I know musicals aren't everyone's cup of tea, but the idea of a House musical gets me really excited.

Actually, Hugh Laurie was in "Spice World", but it was a teeny, tiny part. He played a Poiroit-type detective in a fantasy sequence with Baby Spice. I'm ashamed I know this.

And...a musical "House"? Aww, hell no!

He was indeed in "Spice World" which is why I typed it but used strike through to remove it as it is not a credible entry for "musical experience" but I thought it was funny to add it there ;)

This is the most stupid idea I have ever heard. Musicals in general annoy me, and for a dramatic show to decide to be one for a bit gives me more than enough motivation to change the channel. Whenever "The Simpsons" or "Family Guy" does musical episodes, I do the same thing. Ack.

Wow Jon, then you have missed some of the best moments in Simpson's history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9BXu2U6pEU
