Proposed citizenship reality show is probably illegal

jail cellDon't you just love when shows have a questions for a title: Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, Whose Line is it Anyway?. Last week Brad reported that there's a new one in the works: Who Wants to Marry a U.S. Citizen? Yeah, you read that right. And now you may be asking yourself the same question I did: Is this what American television has come to?

Don't worry just yet. The already infamous show, created by Adrian Martinez and backed by Morusa Media, has NOT been picked up by a network. Although I'm sure there's a network out there stupid enough to think this is a great idea. This article at AttorneyFind.com, entitled Who Wants to Commit a Crime?, explains why this show will not get made. I'll give you a quick synopsis: it's completely illegal.

The author of the article has also found two websites belonging to the show's creator: hookacitizen.com and immigrantlove.com. Both sites have the same disclaimer on the homepage about how they are doing nothing illegal.

The premise of the show still sounds pretty illegal to me. And I hope it is. I'm a huge reality t.v. fan but this is going too far. What do you think?

Sorry, but I don't see this as any (or at least 'much') worse than The Bachelor, Joe Millionaire, Married By America, and of course the infamous Who Wants To Marry a Multi-Millionaire?

I'm not a 'reality' television fan though. So legal or not, good or bad, moral or no, I won't be watching.

I love this idea and this show.

I despise reality television, and I would prefer the legislation against reality tv passed sooner rather than later, and this show is one step closer to the ultimate man hunting show that will get that legislation in play.

Please guys, who wants to up this ante? "The Floater", where we throw a bunch of cripples into a pool and give the survivor a million bucks? I bet we could fit in a fun romantic arc to that one. How about "Who Wants to Marry a Terrorist?" where we pit 72 virgins against each other for the million dollars they get when their husband martyrs himself?

Plus I think it's funny to watch people beg for citizenship. They're obviously too lazy to climb, dig or swim, so they deserve to be humiliated. (BTW, I'm Mexican, so save all your feigned outrage at my alleged racism)

I'm sure it's legal to MARRY a U.S. citizen. I note that the show's title doesn't indicate that the winner will GET U.S. citizenship. Marrying someone with the sole intent of getting citizenship IS illegal. That's what movies like "Green Card" have as their basic premise.

But I agree with @sitruc; regardless of its legality, it's pretty fucked up.

Just like I said on the original post, this would be clear immigration fraud, and everyone involved would be guilty of conspiracy to commit immigration fraud.

I would watch a reality show where someone ends up going to federal prison at the end. That's the irony here.

Bad idea, legal or not. Of course, this is coming from someone who thinks all reality tv is a bad idea and should be illegal! ;-)

Sometimes you can really take reality TV too far. Speaking of, Reality TV deserves to be poked fun at, and Reality Rejects does a great job of it!
