Pee Wee's Playhouse: The Movie, staring ... Johnny Depp?

by Brad Trechak, posted Dec 12th 2007 12:22PM
Pee-Wee's PlayhouseAccording to the Daily Stab, Johnny Depp is considering playing Pee-Wee Herman in a movie version of the former kid's show (and former HBO special) Pee-Wee's Playhouse. Depp has a history of taking on unusual roles and this would certainly be no exception.

The script would be by Paul Reubens, the original Pee-Wee. The two actors have known each other for a while, having worked together in the 2001 movie Blow. Also, both are casting favorites of director Tim Burton (Burton's professional directorial debut was the movie Pee-Wee's Big Adventure).

I don't know if this is going to happen, but it has a better shot than most Hollywood rumors. I think Depp is good in most of his roles and would be able to duplicate the maniacal glee of playing Pee-Wee. Of course, any actor would play any role for the right price (with rare exceptions).

I still remember Pee-Wee's Playhouse from when it was an adult-oriented show on HBO. I wonder if the movie will go the kid's show route or play more for adults?

I love Depp, but nobody could replace Reubens. He *IS* PeeWee Herman.

Yeah, but did you see the HBO special? ;-)

The Paul/PeeWee comeback has been right around the corner for a long time now. Some sort of movie keeps getting mentioned, then dropped. And 1988 keeps getting farther and farther away. I love this sick freak, but maybe it's time to move on.
