Dexter: The British Invasion (season finale)

(S02E12) So, was it good for you too? I've read all of your gripes about the season, in particular the past few episodes, and I see where you were coming from. However, there's something about this show that makes me more quick to suspend disbelief and allow a few things to slide so I can enjoy other aspects of the show.

I'll be one of the first to say that it wasn't a shock to see Lila's actions once she learned of who Dexter was. I'm very glad I saw all of the episodes ahead of time, since once I watched the episodes for the second time I noticed how spoilery the previews were for the following weeks. In the preview shown last week we saw the cabin explosion. It didn't take a genius to figure out what happened. Shame on Showtime for that.

The scenes of Dexter "embracing his freedom" were great, a very similar blow-by-blow of the opening sequence of every episode. The white t-shirt pulled over the face. The sliced blood orange. The carved steak. An homage of sorts to all long-time fans of the show. Wait -- can you be a "long time" fan of a show only two seasons long?

Another un-surprise was the departure of Lundy. I loved having Caradine involved in the show this season, but it was obvious he wouldn't be sticking around for next season. However, with the doubts he had about Doakes' guilt and how close he came to Deb, I wouldn't be surprised if he came back in the future to churn things up about for everyone.

Dexter found the toasted GPS device in evidence, though wouldn't it be somewhat possible for them to trace who it belonged to? That's also not the only thing that would raise a lot of questions about the cabin scene. Even weirdo Matsuka pointed out many things that seemed 'odd' about the scene. Does everything really end up that cleanly for the investigation and Dexter?

I'll admit that, at first, Dexter's game with Lila fooled me. I thought he may actually have changed his tune about her ... but just for a minute.

LaGuerta is obviously nuts about Doakes' death, with the whole memorial fund idea and all. But her reaction and her conversation with Deb highlights something I mentioned before, that if Dexter were to be caught it would severely traumatize Deb, Rita and basically anyone involved with Dexter. No matter what he does for the people he loves, it will all be overshadowed on that dark day, should it ever come.

One of the most tense moments of the episode was the meeting of Lila, Dexter and Deb in Lila's apartment. The amount of luck Dexter was able to conjure up in that scene alone was incredible. Deb barely questions him grabbing her and thinking it was Lila, and Lila doesn't simply open the black bag in front of Deb.

As for the fire scene in Lila's apartment, why is it that kids so easily take off with strangers, at least on TV and the movies. This was reminiscent of 'Fatal Attaction', only an apartment with cartoons instead of an amusement park. Parents, tell your kids not to talk to strangers, m'kay?

The quick flashback with Dexter and Harry was enough to convince me that, for as much good as Harry did for Dexter to keep him safe from discovery, he was instrumental in Dexter evolving into what he is today. Harry could have tried helping Dexter in other ways than to nurture his "addiction," going so far as to tell him he'd never recover. Dexter is Harry's tool, to plug the holes in a justice system that is much to ... holey. We'll see more of this next season, I'm sure.

Finally, the end of Lila. I know some of you are sad to see her go and wished she would have stuck around.

One final question: What was with the awards ceremony with Deb and Angel? Were they being commended for their work on the Doakes case? Seems odd for a case that resulted in a dead body in the end, doesn't it?

Overall I liked this season just as much as last season, perhaps even more. The one thing I didn't like about either season was what I thought were predictable stories, at least toward the second half of the season. I want more surprise next season, to be left guessing until the end. I'm not sure how that would have worked out with this particular storyline, though.

Dexter's back in 2008 -- a new code, a new Dexter. See you then.

Quote of the episode:

Dexter: "You taught me to accept what I am. To trust in the one thing I know with absolute clarity. Thank you."

Overall, how was this season of Dexter?
Incredible! Beat the pants off the first season.317 (23.3%)
Great. Just as good as last season.749 (55.1%)
Good, but season one was better.275 (20.2%)
Pretty bad. I liked season one better.13 (1.0%)
Hated it. Hated season one, too.5 (0.4%)

I think the writer of this article mis-understood the award ceremony. It was not for the closing of the bay harbor butcher case. It was a flashback of when Deb joined the force, hence why young Dexter and Harry were clapping. And also why she was in a regular cops uniform and not her lately usual business attire. Makes me think that the writer didn't actually watch the entire season... you think?

Anyway,I L-O-V-E this show,it's so unique, dark & twisty,in a good way,I really hope this show has at least 5-6 seasons.
Cross your fingers!!

Laguerta was the one who heard all of Doakes' finger pointing towards Dexter. I have a feeling Laguerta is going to take the place of Dexter's antagonist. She studied the evidence, and probably will be suspicious by how it went down.

Credibility or no, I liked it that Lila was the one to find Doakes. In fact the unlikeliness of it all made it more fun. First time Doakes escapes, he runs straight into some drug dealers (unknowingly), identifies himself as a cop, and bam, he's a prisoner again. Then finally someone walks in who might release him, and it turns out to be the only person in the world who likes that Dexter is a serial killer, and takes Dexter's side. Love it.

Plus Doakes' bad luck by being labeled as the suspect in the first place was perfect. When he stole Dexter's slides, that became the hard evidence against Doakes by accident.

Misfortune played a huge roll in his demise.

This season was just as good as the first.

The fact that Dexter has killed two people now because they have found out who he is, only shows how fantastic this show IS. If he kept Lila alive, then that would only point out his inconsistencies. Why would he kill his brother, somebody who he actually had a connection with, but keep Lila alive? Lila was a loose end that Dexter had to take care of, and I'm glad they did it in the season finale, because I would have hated if she just kept showing up next season. I liked her character, but I think she had nothing more to give Dexter, or the plot. She's played her role, and I'm glad she's gone. As for Doakes, I'm sad to see him go, but I think it was a good thing that Lila was the one to kill Doakes. The fact that Dexter always manages to stay true to himself is vital for any of us to really like Dexter. The point is that Dexter is evil AND good, and he's finally become aware of that. In the first season, he showed us how good he can be. The writers overshadowed his dark side, by somebody who was even darker and unapologetic about it. In comparison to the ITK, Dexter proved to us he could be good. In this season, the writers had Dexter experimenting with his dark side, making him the bad guy. Except Dexter discovered that he doesn't fit that role either. He can't just be this one sided two dimensional character, they proved to us how intricate his character really is, and I think they will only further that discovery of Dexter defining himself in season three.

And FYI, if Dexter killed Doakes, then viewers would have felt doubtful and resentful towards Dexter and his character. And that just wouldn't be right, because Dexter is the man.

I thought the finale was a great wrap-up to another terrific season. I love how Dexter is evolving (both the character and the show). I don't think there was any way for Doakes to have survived, but I will definitely miss him next year. Lila, not so much.

I was very pleased on how the show ended especially when Dexter killed Lila. I really wasn't expecting it but glad that we werent kept hanging until next season. I expected to see Lila come back into Dexter's life making appearances and disappearances.
Dexter didn't kill his brother and Lila because he just feared for the safety of Deb or Rita. He killed them because his brother was a serial killer and Lila killed Doakes and also she had the power to expose him. Dexter never kills innocent people. He never had the intentions of killing Doakes. I think he really felt bad that Doakes was killed and he says so and that is why he kills Lila.
This season had my complete attention. When I was not able to see the show on Sunday and when it repeated later that night, thank God for Showtime on Demand. I have been a fan or Michael (Dexter) since Six Feet Under. and will continue being a fan of his on Dexter. Although I thought Doakes was an a**hole, I will miss him. When an actor makes you hate his character, that's a sign of a good actor. He will also be missed because he was the one who kept Dexter looking over his shoulder. Maybe they will have Doake's ghost come back to haunt Dex.

I, for one was happy to see Lila meet a bad end. However, the way the it was done was a little off. I thought it was a dream sequence. I thought that we, as the viewers, earned to see Lila in the "kill room". oh well. Love the show, anyway.

The only thing I'm still wondering about are the killing tools that Lila has in her possession. Did they just disappear? Could she have had a plan to make sure they would be sent to the police in case she was ever murdered?

I just think Dexter is just a great, entertaining show, and that is why I enjoy it, simply because it is just that! Great writers! Can't wait for next season!

I'm sad to see Doakes go. He was one of the funniest characters on the show (in season 1 especially).
