TV Squad presents the 2008 winter schedule

by Richard Keller, posted Dec 31st 2007 6:01PM

Cashmere Mafia and Eli Stone are just two of the new shows premiering this winterThe winter of 2008 will be an interesting one for television. With so many current shows at or near the end of their seasonal run, due to the staring contest known as the writers' strike, the schedule is going to look a bit different. Not only will it be filled with more reality shows, but it will also contain some untested scripted programs that have been waiting for the mid-season to air.

Nevertheless, not all is doom and gloom come the new year. There will be many favorites returning to the airwaves, although they may have shortened seasons. For instance, shows like Medium, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Lost, Monk, Psych, and, yes, even According to Jim, will be returning to the schedule. Then there is the anticipated return of Jericho and, of course, another season of show-killer American Idol, which may not have any competition at all this year.

So, to better navigate the world of winter television, we have provided a list of new and returning shows. Programs are listed in alphabetical order by network and report when a current show is returning to to the schedule or when a new show's premiere will air. In addition, we have also listed how many episodes are left in the show's run, or how many will air if it is premiering. Finally, this time around we have listed programs from networks like Lifetime and MTV that we normally wouldn't provide. But, in this time of woe, any port in the storm may suffice.

Take a deep breath and enjoy.

I am looking for information on how I can find out if a specific episode of Samantha Who will air anytime soon? My daughter was one of a few girls in an episode (episode #101 "The Boss") that filmed at the end of October, but given the writer's strike, there seem to be a lot of reruns instead of new episodes. My daughter is extremely excited to view "her" episode, so if anyone has any info or advice as to where I can get info. I would REALLY appreciate it!

I would just like to say that I absolutely love Women's Murder Club. It was one of my favourite shows this season and for anyone who hasn't seen it, you should really check it out.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how long the strike lasted the last time around? I really can't stand reality tv (Hell's Kitchen being my only weakness) and I am dying for scripted shows to return permanently.

The writer's strike has definitely taken a toll on most TV watchers. As someone mentioned above though, American Idol doesn't need writers, which is awesome! But it is a "show-killer" btw. And there's a new product to go along with this season, Idol karaoke!!! Here's the link:

Here are the other shows I'm curious about besides what you've got here:

TORCHWOOD - starts 1/26 on BBCA. I assume they are uneffected by the strike in the USA and will run as scheduled without a hitch?

REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER - the HBO site claims this show is coming back on Jan. 11...but, what's the deal? What about the strike?

DIRTY SEXY MONEY, PRIVATE PRACTICE, BIONIC WOMAN: I assume the nets have already run out of eps of these new shows, and we won't see these again till the strike ends?

Torchwood is an entirely UK production and since the WGGB (along I believe with most of the writer's guilds in europe) negotiated good royalty rates a few years ago for both dvds and internet, is unlikely to strike. On the other hand, they are strongly requesting the UK production companies don't take the opportunity to sell loads of the UK shows to the US (and thus undermine the WGA), so I don't know if you're liable to see many other UK shows.

Will the Rock of Love show airing Jan 13th be a new season or repeat of the old? I'm not sure how a new season would work exactly since he supposedly found "love" at the end of the last seaon, but I thought I would ask. I couldn't stop watching that show - such trash, yet I was a loyal viewer!
