Mystery solved: Why HIMYM's happy couple haven't moved yet

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 2nd 2008 5:22PM
How I Met Your MotherEven though Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have run out of new How I Met Your Mother episodes due to the writers' strike, they're still happy to answer a reporter's questions about certain plot points and future plans.

Many people (including me) have wondered why the show's happy couple, Marshall and Lily (Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan), haven't moved into their co-op in Dowisetrepla yet. Even though they bought the boondoggle in the seventh episode, there was no mention of the purchase in the four subsequent episodes produced before the strike. Whitney Matheson of USAToday.com was wondering the same thing, so she decided to contact the show.

Bays wrote back, saying that, like most of us thought, the entire process of securing the apartment is going on in the background, including "the dreaded co-op interview." He then revealed that Dowisetrepla will be revisited soon, most likely in the show's next original episode, whenever that may be.

So, there you have it: Just like every other new homeowner, Marhsall and Lily are experiencing the painful closing process for the first time. I guess the meetings with the home inspectors, realtors, and lawyers aren't quite funny enough to make into full-fledged plotlines.

RA and Jeff: This is funny considering that the WGA is out to break the reality and animation writers union by insisting that any new contract require those writers to be part of the WGA. And then there is that sympathy-strike clause. No one in their right mind would do a deal allowing writers to strike whenever anyone else does. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the AMPTP who needs to learn math (a percentage based residual on nothing costs them nothing, if/when the internet side takes off, there will be more than enough to go around). But at this point, both sides are in 5-year-old child mode and need to grow up.

We talked about this on my HIMYM blog a few weeks ago, I figured they'd just be closing. I'm excited to see what happens with this new setting though and what kind of hilarity Ted will be up to now that he's living alone.

Wouldn't it be cool if Robin moved in with him? That has potential for hilarity.

R.A. Porter, yes to me it looks like the AMPTP are more hell bent on breaking the WGA then actually making a good business deal. Of course if the WGA sticks to their guns there will very few scripted shows by April. And I for one am not watching all reality shows and game shows. I have a feeling Many viewers feel the same. But then to the AMPTP us viewers don't mean much to them either I am guessing.

Ohhhhhhhhh! Eh, kinda lame excuse. They're not packing things up? How is Lily not spending every second agonizing over memories and carrying on about how excited she is about the new place, and the others busting on them about the smell?

Will this strike ever end? Seems like their is little progress and no talks.

That's correct, Jeff. No talks. The AMPTP have walked away from the table and have made no indication that they're coming back any time soon. The congloms are more interested in breaking the WGA (and all the other unions in due course) than in making a fair deal.

And one more reason to pray for an end to the strike.
