Say goodbye to Letterman's beard!

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 4th 2008 12:01PM

Bloomberg, LettermanSorry ladies, it looks like David Letterman is getting rid of his new beard.

On tonight's show (actually taped Wednesday - I was wondering if Letterman would still do an early taping of the Friday show after his return from the writers strike), Letterman announces that he's getting rid of the beard. And he's not going to do it himself either. The beard is going to be shaved off on stage on Monday's show by someone else.

This is a good thing. The beard just makes Letterman look, um, well old. And he'd probably joke that he is old, but really, it's amazing the difference between a clean-shaven Dave and Dave that looks like a prospector/wino. He even seems to act differently.

Now, I wonder if he's going to have to give back the key to the city that Mayor Bloomberg gave to his beard the other night?

Can someone explain this whole taping schedule to me? For example, on Carson's show, the Jerry Rice interview that was taped a few weeks back was finally aired during the week of Christmas. However, he mentioned that Jerry was on the show, and that they were only a few days from Christmas, all during the same monologue.

What the hell am I watching? Are these shows taped earlier in the day, or are they taped weeks in advanced, and played off (somehow) like they were taped earlier that day.

in a five day work week , dave only tapes four days. He tapes two shows on monday , one of which airs friday night.
at least , that's how he used to do it....

The shows during the strike were reruns of shows taped earlier, in some cases at least a year before (when they were showing episodes involving Christmas). Now that the late night talkers are back - with or without writers - shows are shot pretty much live-to-tape the same day...in most cases. For example Letterman doesn't shoot his Friday show on Friday but rather earlier in the week. When the talk show hosts take week off - which should be happening any day now right - then they usually show reruns of fairly recent vintage.

Scott, Lighten up, son. I didn't see it then, so I'm happy glad and proud to see it NOW.

I don't dislike the beard nearly as much of most other people. I really like the color - a weakness of mine.

Muzue, I agree - Dave is head and shoulders above Leno in just about every way possible. Dave has a brain, for one thing and a very unique wit and charm. I watched Dave on Wednesday night and taped Leno (watched it today during lunch). Jay is lame most of the time, but he did okay w/o writers, I'll give him that. Hey, maybe that means he's just lame all the time.

Reminds me of German late-night talker Harald Schmidt who had a beard and shoulder-long hair when he returned to the air on a new station one year after he left Sat.1

Conan looks good in his beard. Dave looks like "Fuzzy" St. John (an old time cowboy movie sidekick).

He looks too old with that beard. Way better without it.

Greetings.

I will be sad to see it go. We live in such a beardist society. It's a shame.
