Five little-known things about Seinfeld

by Anna Johns, posted Jan 6th 2008 5:06PM
seinfeldAsk Men has a list of 5 Things You Didn't Know about Seinfeld. I don't consider myself the biggest Seinfeld fan on the planet, but I do think I've seen every episode, and I didn't know any of this stuff. Maybe you die-hard fans will scoff at the list and proclaim your knowledge of all those little known facts and more.

For instance, did you realize that we never got to meet any of Jerry, George, or Elaine's siblings? We got to meet their parents, but each of them referenced siblings during several episodes and we never, ever saw or met them. That's actually a cool little insight to their characters--that they really don't want to see their siblings. In case you were wondering, Elaine has a sister (her nephew was the one who was obsessed with the nipple slip Christmas card), Jerry has a sister, and George has a brother.

Also, the series began and ended with the same conversation about button placement on George's shirt. You'd think I would know that and that people would've made a big deal of it during the series finale, but maybe the disappointment in the finale overshadowed that fact. Check out the rest of the little tidbits and see if they really are "little known facts".

Well, I am a huge fan of the show, I've seen every episode at least twice. I knew everything except for the origin of Festivus. I've never heard that before. The rest of the list was pretty familar, I thought everyone ( at least true fans of the show) knew the button thing, especially since it was written about so often in reviews of the final ep. But, I realize everyone isn't as anal retentive as I am on trivia like that. I never thought ther'd be some new trivia about Seinfeld that I didn't know, so I'm pleased to learn that.

There is some small doubt in my mind about the jerry Stiller role being played by another actor. Maybe because he was added in after the first airing, that would be, what late '80's? Even a trivia buff like me can't remember everything :)

I have seen the whole series. It is really interesting when I discover something. Yeah, all the secrets are in the whole series:

In response to the origins of Festivus, I'm still confused when people insist on crediting Seinfeld with originating yada yada yada. Near the end of the show's run, nearly every print article included it in the list of the series' innovations. Yes Seinfeld popularized it, but it was never anything more than a borrowed catch phrase.

I hadn't realized George's original father and Newman's first appearance-voice over had been re-cast. That's kind of disappointing. This is a classic sitcom, and all the great ones include their first and second Darrens and first appearances of Harry Morgan before he began as Col. Potter. It's part of the lore and the charm of any series. Kind of silly to fidget with the post production to that degree years later. It doesn't need that kind of perfectionist treatment, IMO.

Yeah, siblings and the button were the ones I didn't know. I should finish buying all the seasons.

I've seen every episode of this show and still can't figure out why it was so popular. Why did I watch a show I don't like, I don't know. Won't do it again, though.

The first one about Elaine is a "duh" to pretty much anyone, same with the changing of the dad's.

A few days ago i got myself a lite birthday present and bought every season of Seinfeld on dvd, and thats actuly the first time i got the "Havent we had this conversation before?" joke becaus i dont think i have ever seen the first episode before that
That Elaine was not an original part of the cast i noticed right away becaus she wasent in any of the 3-4 first episodes, and i noticed right away that it was a diffrent actor playing Newmen and Morty, but i havent gotten to the first appreance of Costanza Sr. yet

For what it's worth, I did know all these facts. Anyone with the DVD should do really, the "Notes About Nothing" facts are just about the greatest extra I've ever experienced on a DVD.
