The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Gnothi Seauton

by Brad Trechak, posted Jan 14th 2008 10:01PM
sarah connor chronicles 201e02
(S01E02) "Gnothi Seauton" is Greek for "Know Yourself". I suppose it is analogous to the personal growth going on with each of the characters at this stage.

Projected into their own future, Sarah and Cameron go to one of Sarah's old friends named Enrique while attempting to get new fake id's, in case Sarah wants to get beer later.

Meanwhile, John leaves their safe house in an expression of his teenage, rebellious nature. Where did he go? The mall, of course. I suppose he was interested in the technological advancements in malls between 1999 and 2007.

The show is really starting to kick off its two major sci-fi cliche's. The first being time-travel and the resulting contradictions. The second is the Pinocchio syndrome of the robot trying to be human. I was particularly amused when Summer Glau was trying to imitate the woman leaning against the car.

I like how the action of the series is getting tongue-in-cheek silly, much like Buffy did when that show was in its prime. An example of this when the headless Terminator ripped off a construction worker's head to walk around inconspicuously.

I also found it amusing how Sarah Connor was unaware of what 9/11 was. Isn't it standard operating procedure when waking up in the future to do historical research?

I don't get John Connor as a character. Why search for Charley Dixon, his mother's ex? It really doesn't make sense given the situation they're in. I recognize that this entire show is a fantasy, but in my opinion good television involves people giving realistic reactions to unusual situations.

I'm starting to find the Sarah Connor voice-overs to be annoying and distracting. I recognize that it's a holdover storytelling device from the movies, but still...

The new family pseudonym for the Connor family is Baum. As in L. Frank Baum, the writer of The Wizard of Oz and creator of the Tin Man, the mechanical man with no heart. This series has the subtlety of World War II. Sometimes I wish the series were erudite like an episode of Frasier, but I don't think a family like the Connors would be quoting Keats.

In conclusion, someone asked me the following question: why is it when computers become self-aware in sci-fi, they automatically become evil? Why can't they become accountants or something? I had no answer.

After two episodes, do you feel the Sarah Connor Chronicles will last beyond a season?
Yes, it will last.479 (46.5%)
No, Fox will kill it.256 (24.9%)
Can't decide at this stage.295 (28.6%)

Hi everybody!

It's the first time I write, even I'm "addicted" to a bunch of them, but ok, let's say I have to do it with this serie!

I'm pretty much dissapointed with this serie. I'm a big fan of the first two T-movies, and I had a lot of hope put in this serie... But even for the first chapter, I saw it wasn't in the rigth way...

I've always though that for a serie of this kind, to make it a success, it's necessary to consider one fact like true (here timetravel and all the Skynet thing) but the other ones have to remain "real". (for instance, like I've already read here, "realistic reactions to unusual situations.")

And like many people have already said here, the serie is failing in that. For me, the worst one is the fact of the "decapitated Terminator body" that remained at the bank safe. Shit, one plot of the argument in T2 was the "time loop" of Skynet being created because they found the arm and some other rest of the first terminator. And in the serie they had that, and a time-travel machine and I don't know what more... and nothing happens. For me, it's such a big mistake!

I really hope the serie will have a 180º change soon...

Cheers

PD: Sorry for any writting mistake I could do!

Count me in as one of the more optimistic group - maybe my standards lowered themselves when I wasn't looking, but I was pretty much thrilled with the two eps I've seen, and looking forward to more! Lena Headey and Summer Glau are REALLY good actors, and Tom Dekker seems like he is too - it's just that he gets crappy stuff to play! I think they're deliberately dumbing him down; so there will be a progression of his maturity and skills to play, as the series progresses. They'd have nowhere to go with him if he was the supercool genius world savior ALREADY.

Regarding Cameron's behavior prior to meeting John Connor --

Far be it from me to retcon on the writers' behalf, but it's implied that Cameron is a more sophisticated type of Terminator (if she's a Terminator at all -- she could be something else). If she's a cyborg, or an AI based on a real human, it's possible that the human personality was used for some sort of deep cover mode, then switched off or dumped entirely when a positive ID was made.

I loved Firefly but Summer Glau has the range of Larry Storch.

I agree with the comment about how Cameron seemed normal until she let him know she was a robot. The whole robot learning to be human thing is VERY tired as a character arc. Gag.

Here's something that totally bugs me about Summer Glau's character:

Before she reveals she is a Terminator, she is perfectly capable of acting like a completely normal human being with a personality of her own and everything.

But once she reveals she is a Terminator, she suddenly turns into R2D2 and behaves awkwardly around everyone all the time.

I can't pretend to be as into the show as Skater3900, but I agree completely with his suggestion that Cameron is/was someone close to Future John Connor -- perhaps a wife/lover who suffered a fatal injury and could only be saved by becoming some kind of hybrid Terminator cyborg. Or perhaps she's a new Terminator with superior AI based on John's wife/whatever. At any rate, I suspect we'll see that some of the glaring inconsistencies in her behavior are actually intentional hints at her true nature.

Too bad Sarah and John don't have that excuse.

I liked when she touched John as she was walking out of the room, out of concern, etc. I thought it was unusual behaviour for a Terminator, and that all comes back to the Pinocchio aspect of the series.

Then I *really* liked when she revealed in the next scene that she was scanning him.

It was a nice gotcha.

Wow, I cannot believe there are so many people hooked after 2 episodes. I was not feeling the show at all through the first episode but was willing to give it a chance (still am due to nothing else being on). This is mainly due to the poor acting, bad dialogue, terrible terminators, and ridiculous decisions by the future leader of mankind and his mother.

Then the show craps all over the time travel rules set up by the movie and gives us a headless terminator. I kept imagining the headless terminator walking into walls and accidentally putting a toaster on his neck instead of a head. So this terminator's going to be walking around Los Angeles dressed head to toe in clothing with his face fully covered up? That's pretty inconspicuous! Wonderful writing.

Speaking of writing, am I supposed to feel sorry for the writers on strike when they turn out garbage like this ruining what should have been a slam dunk scifi series rivaling shows like BSG in quality???

I will keep watching but these two episodes were herendous. I hope they explain why these terminators are so dumb and why Cameron is a bubbly non-suspicious human teenager in one scene and a T2 Arnie-like terminator studying how to lean on a car in the next.

If you think someone walking around LA dressed head to toe in the middle of summer is weird... you obviously have never been to LA and thus, have no idea what you're talking about.

LA, my friend is EXACTLY the sort of place where someone covered head to toe, ponderously lumbering around and ignoring everybody would want to be. Hell, he'd probably start some sort of fashion trend.

My favorite character by far is Cameron. I know some might be put off by John's protector going from a huge guy (Arnold Schwarznegger) in T2 to a little girl in the series, but you have to admit that she can really kick butt and she does it with grace.

But aside from her fighting skills, she has some of the best lines and she brings a bit of humor to an action show.
