And the identity of Gossip Girl is ...

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 22nd 2008 2:28PM

Gossip Girl

No, I'm not going to reveal it on the front page here. In fact, I'm not even sure if what the New York Daily News says can even possibly be true.

Gossip columnist Ben Widdicombe says he knows who the identity of Gossip Girl is, and you're never going to guess it, so don't even try. But before we get to that bit of business (after the jump), can I ask a question about Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley, Blake Lively, and Leighton Meister? Are these the names of real people? Chace, Leighton, Penn, and Blake? These are first names? They sound like the names of characters on The Bold and the Beautiful. I mean, their real names sound more soap opera-ish than their character names on the show. I always thought Chase was a cool name, but I never thought of spelling it with a "c."

OK, now on to the big news. Gossip Girl is...

...a guy!

Yup, Widdicombe says that the girl narrating the story is actually Eric van der Woodson, played by Connor Paolo. This is supposed to serve as the big "twist" in the show. The show is narrated by Kristen Bell, so I'm not sure how that works out. Maybe Veronica Mars can investigate.

New York mag says that this is impossible. And they list five specific reasons why there's no way that Eric can be the girl behind the gossip, but I'm not going to rehash it here because I've already talked about this show more in this post than I have in the past 12 months combined. If you're a fan of the show though, it's well worth reading.

So serena started a rumor that serena was pregnant? Ha, ya I don't think so...

If it were any of the main characters, I think it would be our resident Lonely Boy - Dan. Remember when Jenny caught him with it up on his computer?

In any event, if they do a reveal, they will introduce a new character who will be slowly revealed. Logically speaking, it can't be any of them.

Blair - not her cuz she was shocked when Serena showed up from boarding school even after GG had posted it.
Nate - for the same reason above.
Serena - not her because of the pregnancy rumor that almost ruined her and Dan.
Dan - probably not him just because he's never around when other things happen...but it could be. He never seems to be "in the know" though.
Jenny - very likely to be her. Strong writing background in her family. She knows everyone who is everyone but she's a freshman and I am lead to believe that GG has been around for more than just this one year.
Chuck - another possibility. GG did know about him and Blair in the limo. But it would be counter productive of him to text himself if he was GG (when he sent photos of Serena going to the hospital).
the minority girls - not them because they are always shocked by what GG has to say.
Eric - not him because he trashes his sister entirely too much and he obviously didn't have a phone/internet in the hospital otherwise serena would have known where he was when she got back to the city.

At the end of the most recent GG book, Serena gives Nate her famous "You know you love me" smile (the first time it is mentioned, ever), which just so happens to be GG's catch phrase, leading me to believe that GG is Serena, and most definitely not Eric

People say it can't be Eric because he was in the Institute when Serena came back and he wouldn't be able to leave. But people text gossip girl and they tell her what they saw. When Serena came back some girl saw her and sent a text to gossip girl. Gossip girl wasn't there.

I wish Katy and Isabel would have more to do and say. In the last aired episode there was 2 new it girl b!tches and they had more to say in that one episode than Katy and Isabel have said since the show began. I can see Gossip Girl being revealed in the last ever episode - the series finale. I can see them having Kristen Bell appearing ever so briefly in the last scene logging in the latest gossip than turning off her computer as a way to end the series. Also would like to see Gossip Girl reviews and lets remember this was the first new show of the season to get a full season episode order.

There's no need to "reveal" Gossip Girl. It's not part of the story, it's just a narrative device. Also, there's no way that Eric can be Gossip Girl - he was in the hospital for the first how many episodes? There was actually an episode about him leaving the hospital for the first time.

Also, would he report gossip that could hurt his sister? Since Gossip Girl seems almost exclusively focused on Serena's indiscretions, that would make him a real prick.

Having the show reveal who Gossip Girl is would be a very, very strange thing to do, since as other people have mentioned, it really doesn't matter in the show at all. In fact, the "Gossip Girl" framing device and voice over is the only thing about the show that irritates me - they could drop that and I would be very happy without the narration. I always assumed that the kids in the show couldn't care less about being reported on because they are used to it - society columns and all - and Gossip Girl fills the TMZ niche in their gossip eco-system.

They never reveal in the books who gossip girl is. Once you have read all of the books most people come to the concluison that that person really doesn't matter. Its the storylines between the charcters that matter. In the books the charcters never really talk about what gossip girl said on her lastest blog. It's like they are completely unaware of their lives being blown up into cyber space.

Yeah, I only meant about the TV show, since I have not read the books I can't say.

But if it was to have some significance in the books, that'd be just another reason for the TV show not to reveal anything : cause either they spoil things completely for readers, or they go a completely separate way, which brings nothing really interesting on the show, since it doesn't matter, there, who GG is...

LOL, yeah those are some pretty "odd" names, for sure.

About the revelation, I don't believe it one second either. I didn't know whether or not it was revealed in the book, but it only make sense (to me) that we'll never find out, because chances are no one knows, nor care about it.

The identity of Gossip Girl isn't really a mystery, since it doesn't really matter. (Plus, my bet would be there's not just one person behind that name...)

My understanding is that it hasn't been revealed in the books. And while it might not matter on the TV show (and I agree, it really doesn't matter), it may have some "big reveal" significance in the books.
