Nielsen ratings for the week ending January 20

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 23rd 2008 5:29PM

Eli Manning passing during the NFC Championship gameHere are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.

I wonder why football gets so many different parts of a broadcast to count as separate shows on the ratings list? The actual game, the pre-kick, the post game, the bridge (which I assume is...well, I don't assume anything anymore, though I would guess it's the time between the pre-kick and the kickoff, though I could be wrong), and now something called "gun." Or maybe it's "GUN." Not sure what that is, but it came at 10:16pm, just before the post game show, which started at 10:22pm.Why don't other shows get that sort of treatment? Why don't sitcoms and dramas get their shows split up like this?

1. NFC Championship (FOX)

2. NFC Championship - Gun (FOX)
3. American Idol - Tues (FOX)
4. American Idol - Weds (FOX)
5. NFC Championship - Post Game (FOX)
6. NCIS (CBS)
7. Deal Or No Deal - Mon (NBC)
8. CSI: Miami (CBS)
9. CSI (CBS)
10. Without A Trace (CBS)
11. Comanche Moon - Part 2 (CBS)
12. Law and Order: SVU (NBC)
13. Comanche Moon - Part 3 (CBS)
14. Deal Or No Deal - Weds (NBC)
15. Law and Order (NBC)
16. Two and a Half Men (CBS)
17. Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? (FOX)
18. Dance War (ABC)
19. Extreme Makeover (ABC)
20. American Gladiators (NBC)

Bob, could it be the way the network charges for advertising?

How isn't the AFC championship not in the top 20?

Was it shown in prime time? If it was Sunday afternoon it wouldn't show up.

In case anyone was wondering (like me):

"Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles fans, Sarah didn’t make the list, but came in at #21 with 10.08 million viewers."

I am surprised there hasn't been any talk about how Law and Order has been revitalized by the addition of the new ADA and Jack's promotion as DA. I actually watch that show in real time, not by my DVR.

The casting of Jeremy Sisto also meshes well with Jesse.....(last name escapes me at the moment.)

It is not surprising that their ratings are back up (well the strike isn't hurting the show either.)

American Gladiators is a top 20 show?! Thats why nbc would want to stop spending money on pilots.

I can't see ANY reason they would count pre and post game with the actual game. I never watch the mouth-breather hosts on CBS, FOX, ESPN or NBC's pre/post game shows. We're not alone. Many NFL fans are fans of the games, not the clueless clowns they bring on before and after the games.

Doesn't WWE Raw get counted as two shows?

I believe the bridge show is the show they shove inbetween two football games....kind of like a combination of a post game show and a pre game show.
