A Daily Show: January 23, 2008 - VIDEO

JonThe first bit of news was Fred "Frankenberry" Thompson announcing that he's dropping out of the race. Frankenberry sounded better when people were just speculating about his potential candidacy, but as soon as he made his announcement on Leno, it all went downhill. When will people learn that talk shows are generally the kiss of death? I mean, except for The Colbert Report, because all guests on that show get the "Colbert bump".

"Very Mad Money" (without the writers, is that the best they could come up with?): After sneakily working "douchebag" into my vocabulary through repetition, Jon has given me yet another masterpiece to further my eloquence: "nippledick", as in "It's the economy, nippledick". And while the "hot chick/bald guy" jokes died pretty quickly, I couldn't get over Jon's remark about the hot bald guy's facial hair: "He planted a village here in hopes of... migraaation". Obviously, my attempt at putting his hilarious inflection to text has failed.

Anyway, the Republicans think the Democrats are screwing up the economy (surprise, surprise) and Cavuto is a conceited douchebag/nippledick (surprise, surprise).

"Operation Deserter Storm": Continuation to Jason Jones' mediocre two-part series set in Iceland. There were only two good things about this segment: A) massive strongman Magnus assisting Jones in all his pointless, lazy activities and B) Jones talking like Gob Bluth the entire time.

The night's guest was PJ O'Rourke, author of On The Wealth of Nations (Books That Changed the World). I'm not entirely sure how I felt about this interview. On one hand, O'Rourke held his ground really well with Jon, but I also kind of felt he was trying a little too hard. I mean, I would know, as I am an expert in the art of desperation.

Jon/Stephen: None. I really hope there's one for Thursday's episode. I miss these. Moment of Zen: Fred Thompson's cool with just being Fred.

I really liked the second part of the Jason sequence thought his comedy was spot on:
"I had let my country down, and also the country directly below it, America."

It's weird. I own just about every PJ O'Rourke book, and he is absolutely hilarious...on paper. I have never seen an on-camera appearance that captures any of his wit.

I was really hoping that at the end of the Iceland segment, Magnus would come in and carry both Jason and Herdis away.

Colbert also had a guest who was really forcing it. The skydiver was fake-laughing so hard he was almost mocking Stephen.

Me too! I totally thought Magnus was going to pick up Jason, who was still holding Herdis.

There were a few points where I thought Colbert's guest was going to dislocate his jaw, snake-style.
