Marvel gets Lost

by Brad Trechak, posted Jan 24th 2008 4:25PM
Marvel ComicsIt's product placement on a whole new level. ABC Marketing is placing references to its its show Lost in Marvel Comics.

It's a pretty big marketing campaign, based on what I read in the article. There will be posters and references in panels of various comics.

I wonder how the creators feel about that? Will it interfere with a story or piece of art? Will they get renumeration for putting the advertisements in their stories (much as TV writers were looking for a piece of the advertising dollars for putting product placement in their scripts).

With all these Marvel movies coming out, it's surprising that more television shows aren't using comics for marketing purposes. Or maybe they are. I stopped collecting a while ago.

With this and DC Comics' Heroes comic book, perhaps comics are becoming to television what television is to movies. Television depends on advertising dollars from movies. Perhaps comics will start to depend on advertising dollars from television. Perhaps.

I noticed one on a taxi in Daredevil #104. It was just an ad for Oceanic Airlines. I think I saw one somewhere else, but I can't find it right now.

i actually saw a comic page with a lost ad in it. it was very small and didnt really harm the page it was on. it was a small poster on the side of the wall, had LOST on it and evangeline lilly's mug on it. its a nice little, "hey look at that," but thats about it. if i still had the link in question i could post it, some guy posted a scan of it online. i'm too lazy to google at the moment too.

This probably won't amount to more than LOST billboards or Oceanic Air t-shirts drawn into the backgrounds of panels. Marvel has previously done these kind of promos with the Army and the odious truth.com.

Did we not learn from last year big marvel tie-in/crossover with "Guiding Light". Wrong marketing will not save LOST, no more than it did for a soap. And yes I read comic books, look at GL and sometimes at Lost

Writers or Producer of Lost are or have work to Marvel: Briank. Vaughan, Damon Lindelof, Jeph Loeb and Javier Grillo Marxuach, so there is connection also in creators.

Comics and TV are getting more and more interdependant: Writers on both sides, advertising, references, comics based on series (Buffy, Heroes...), series based on comics (Preacher, Smallville, Blade...).
