Stargate Atlantis: Trio

McKay and Keller barely escape the collapse of the mine room

(S04E16) Let's shake up this review of Stargate Atlantis a bit by asking a few question's about this week's episode.

Shouldn't the fall into the mine shaft that McKay, Carter, and Keller took have killed or seriously injured them? I know it would have been a very short episode, but would a normal person survive a fall like that without some form of injury? It wasn't like they fell into a pile of pillows or marshmallows -- that ground was hard. Maybe the gravity wasn't as heavy on the planet they got trapped on as Earth-standard gravity.

How was the team able to place all of those crates up high without equipment? Again, I have to go with the lighter gravity argument here, since those crates looked pretty heavy to stack up on one another. And, speaking about the crates...

Why was Samantha doing all the dangerous climbing? Hello, didn't she ever see an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation before? The commanding officer does not take all of the risks because their job is to, well, command. the dangerous stuff is left to another member of the team. In this case, by jeopardizing her life over and over she ran the risk of dying, leaving the task of getting out of the mine room to a very pessimistic man and an untested doctor.

Four Hours and 50 minutes -- Don't you think someone from Atlantis would have tried to contact them? They should have got worried when Colonel Carter and her team didn't report in after an hour or so. Why weren't there jumpers scanning their area to see if they could be found. Especially when the city's administrator was the one not reporting in. On top of morphine and a grappling hook gun they really need to include some emergency communication equipment.

Has Rodney watched every episode of Macgyver? He must have or he wouldn't have been able to build that grappling hook gun. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything to grab onto with the grappling hook. So it was all a moot point. You know, with some chewing gum and a piece of tin foil McKay could have made a portable transporter to beam them out of there.

Was anyone surprised that the room fell just after they all got out? Or that the rope broke just after McKay reached the mine shaft? I wasn't -- it was bound to happen. Anyway, if the rope broke and McKay fell to his death it would take a bit of time to find a replacement.

Steve Carell or Stephen Colbert? Or would you pick Jon Stewart over both of them? I'd have to go with Stephen Colbert because he's going to conquer the world someday.

Despite all of my questions I actually enjoyed this episode of Atlantis quite a bit. I thought I wouldn't with the cast that was appearing, but I thought they all worked quite well together. It certainly helped that the entire episode took place in one room, which allowed them to interact much more than they would in an episode full of action and contact with other actors.

I think my favorite timesin the mine room were the simple conversations they had. The 'Would You Rather' scene turned out quite well and McKay's revelation that he and Katie were pretty much broken up was a nice little moment between he and the two women he was trapped with. Then there was the agreement that, even though Zelenka was a great guy, he was a bit weird. Also enjoyable was the the bar game that Dr. Keller suggested and they all played in order to build a bridge that would get them out of the room.

Speaking about Jennifer Keller -- um, what was that about between her and Rodney? I thought that she was digging Ronon right now, or at least it seemed that way after their near kiss a few weeks ago. Now, she's flirting with McKay? Man, you save one life...

Frankly, I think Keller and McKay would make a better couple than Ronon and Keller. Rodney is a little bit pessimistic and talky while Jennifer is a little bit petrified, yet has a hard-edge to her. Together they could make the perfect couple

And Sam? Well, she tried, but this was really McKay and Keller's show. I'm in agreement with most of you when you say that Amanda Tapping should have never been added to the show. All she seemed to do this episode was to get injured. I can only hope that she will have a meatier role come these last few episodes of the season.

Next week, Teal'c comes to Atlantis to counsel Ronon for his upcoming review by the I.O.A.

"Right, because once you meet your contact walking all the way back to the gate is a great use of time."

Yes, because of course the only way to check in is to be beside the gate and 'shout' down it.

You've obviously not watched much stargate judging by this comment!

Radio signals can travel back and forward through a wormhole. The standard way of checking in from sg-1 was stargate command dialing in and making radio contact.

They have some pretty advanced tech. I'm sure they can manage to communicate over a few miles.

This episode really wasn't thought out well. There are so many other more interesting ways they could have accomplished the 'fun character development in a room' scenario. I personally enjoyed the epsiode for character development and fun. It just wasn't very realistic or conforming to the usual stargate way of doing things.

To all those complaining that Keller is a slut, take a look at the following scene that got cut (source: J Mallozzi's blog)

(during the knot tying)
Carter: So...you seeing anyone?
Keller: What?
Carter: Around the base, you seeing anyone?
Keller: I dunno...I had a moment with - with this...guy. He's not exactly easy to read so...I guess the short answer is "no". You?
Carter: Well, I'm the boss, so I can't really...
Keller: Right Anyone back home?
Carter: Uhm...
Keller: Un-huh, I thought so. Give it up.
Carter: Well, it's complicated.
Keller: Show me a relationship that isn't.
Carter: He's in Washington...I'm here.
Keller: Ouch. Long distance relationship.
Carter: He's going to retire soon, so maybe -
Keller: Really! Retire? So...an older man, huh?
Carter: Not that much older.
Keller: Washington, older man...is he like a Senator or something? Someone famous? Would I know him?
Carter: Probably not.

Man, if they had left that scene in no one would have anything to complain about AND the Sam Jack shippers would finally get some respect.

You would think that after ALL of the times that the SG teams have run into trouble on supposedly friendly planets that they would make it Standard Operating Procedure to check-in at time of arrival and again at time of contact. And only then start any larger increments between check-in times.

Right, because once you meet your contact walking all the way back to the gate is a great use of time.

I liked these three characters together. Plot holes are in every show - if you need to focus that much energy on it, don't bother watching.
And I'm glad Tori is gone for good.

I liked the conversations throughout and felt they were consistent except for SAM not pulling rank to get the Grappling Hook after her almost getting hit. I mean come on. The pipe then could have been hit when Sam pulled it down with the dirt. Same scenario but more to her character. When she falls I think her jumping to the beam albeit akwardly and missing would be more in her character as a soldier. As for the room falling, I think that as they started moving up the tunnel and it falling would have been just as effective.

As for the end, with Keller and McKay, SHe is helping him like Sam and she did in the beginning with the "You broke up with her." Comments they made as well as his comments about their respective body types. He did not even realize she was asking him to have a drink with her. Slightly Flirty? Yes. Slutty? No.

After McKay fired the cannon, I really expected to see that he had forgotten to tie off the other end of the rope.

It was good that the rope broke when it did; otherwise, McKay would have been yanked right out of that tunnel when the mining room fell.

Some more questions:

why do they just assume that alien cultures attach the same meanings to colors, like "red=danger"?

Without any way to know, how can they just know that they've added enough weight to damage the integrity oft he structure?

If the are has four tremors a day, on average, why did they have about a half a dozen in four hours?

Why does Oreo keep popping up on these boards just to say how terrible his/her television viewing choices are?

Why is the doc a "slut" just because she's interested in more than one person? How do we know that the Ronin thing isn't over, anyway? Maybe she realied that would go nowhere. Way to pass judgement based on about a total of five minutes, people.

Why didn't they ever try to actually look in the crates?

I tend to like filler episodes for the character development, but this one was of distractingly poor quality. I did enjoy parts of it, but overall not up to par.

well its still one of the best shows on TV I just hope that sci fi does not get cheap on its budget because its one of the very few things that keeps that network afloat they need to quit investing their money in all of these cheep sci fi orginal movies that suck

This was just a rehash of the show from a couple of weeks ago where they all get locked into different rooms on Atlantis. Obviously the producers are desperate to save money so they wanted to limit the nimber of places they had to film. One such episode is understandable in a season, two just after each other is inexcusable.

Do you even watch the show before you write your reviews, or do you just FFWD and try to make sense out of what happened without the dialogue? Not that I would blame you if you did... but still, a lot of your complaints were answered in the show.

How did they survive the fall? They said they landed on a bunch of crates.

Why didn't atlantis come looking for them? Check in was in 6 hours.

Why was sam climbing all the time? Because both the Dr and McKay were scared of heights.

The other stuff.. aside from your rhetorical questions:
How did the stack the boxes? I dunno, two people lifting and one person pulling works fairly well.

How did McKay build a cannon? I dunno.. maybe he got a hint from the gas explosion gave him a hint? Have you never heard of a potato gun before? Because that's all he built. It's hardly like he made a guass rifle or something.

Really, the show is bad enough all by its lonesome without the extra help.
