Thanks for the link, kevjohn.
Seems to suggest that maybe the first season WAS on video, film afterwards.
The American Masters tribute to Carol Burnett was equally good.

Where are you getting information about "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" I don't find a listing for it at Best Buy or DVD Empire.

I might consider getting the Newhart set, BUT....

Did anybody catch that American Masters tribute to Bob on PBS? The 1970's Bob Newhart Show looked crisp and clean, but the 1980s Newhart footage looked like shit! Very obviously video as opposed to film. I don't recall the show being on video. Maybe there was some dispute and the tribute show could only get their hands of video copies?

So, was Newhart on film or video? Does anybody remember?

That was a great American Masters episode on him. I should have listed that as another feather in PBS's cap in the discussion thread about whether we should keep on supporting tax-supported broadcasting.

Both.

The first season, which is what they're offering, was on tape. It was inferior and for more than just technical reasons. No Julia Duffy. No Peter Scolari. Instead you had Jennifer Holmes as Leslie Vanderkellen, a fabulously wealthy world class skier and philanthropist who works for Dick to "find out what it is like to be normal," and Stephen Kampmann as Kirk, a compulsive liar who owns the cafe next to the inn. Best to forget the first season as a series of bad choices and embrace the filmed episodes.
