HBO launches YouTube channel

by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 26th 2008 11:43AM
EntourageIn recent weeks, TV Squad has reported that HBO has made episodes of their new drama series In Treatment available for free viewing online. Now, HBO has taken another step in expanding its brand and making some of their top shows available on the web. The cable channel has just inked a deal with YouTube to create an HBO channel online. The HBO/YouTube site is up and running -- you can click over there today and start catching up on HBO series.

The initial line up is impressive, starting with the Gabriel Byrne drama In Treatment. You can also catch up with Entourage episodes, which are always fun. There are more laughs with Flight of the Conchords, Extras, Stand Up Comedy, Def Comedy Jam, and Real Time With Bill Maher. On the dramatic front, there's The Wire. In addition, you can watch episodes of the award-winning magazine show Real Sports, as well as the Latino documentary series Habla y Habla.

According to HBO, the shows will be shown sans commercials, just as they are displayed on the cable net. This is just another way to spread the word about HBO and, hopefully, encouraging people to subscribe. "We invest significantly in developing HBO programs and are always searching for new promotional platforms," said Joseph Giraldi, HBO's director of digital distribution and partnerships, in a statement.

Apparently they're going to have the Entourage Season 5 Preview/Teaser on it soon. Should be exciting!

So...basically the post is 90% wrong. Only fully episodes of "In Treatment", everything else is promos. Good job, TV Squad! Maybe if the press release isn't clear, you should actually check into it before posting it verbatim.

With the exception of the four "In Treatment" episodes, there are just promos and clips on this site, which is basically what you'd get if you went directly to the HBO site. It is still "premium cable," after all.
