The Sarah Connor Chronicles: What He Beheld (season finale) - VIDEO

by Brad Trechak, posted Mar 3rd 2008 11:47PM
The Sarah Connor Chronicles(S01E09) This is continued from the "Vick's Chip" episode post.

Finally, everything comes together. There are references to several episodes (if not every episode) throughout the season and there is something of a climax (albeit a disappointing one). Agent Ellison finally reappears after sitting the last episode out and he comes to the conclusion that killer robots from the future are after the Connors. What's he smoking?

For some reason, I thought Derek was the younger Reese. Obviously, I was mistaken. One of the comments in previous reviews pointed out that Kyle and Derek were alive in the current timeframe. Obviously, this plot point hadn't escaped the writers. Good thing Skynet doesn't know who John's daddy is.

I'll make some commentary about this episode than wrap it up with my thoughts for the entire season.

DerekObviously, the big telling scene of the episode was John meeting his father Kyle as a child. It's a very nice birthday gift from Derek given how much John is desperate for a daddy-figure. Of course, John probably asked for an iPhone.

When the British gangster (who wasn't Sarkissian) left the room, didn't he hear Sarah telling Derek to follow him? Yeesh. Couldn't she have waited a minute or two longer?

SarahI so want to go to the prom with Cameron. Since she's all blowed up now, I guess he'll have to find another date.

Man, Derek is COLD. Even if the little girl wasn't the British guy's daughter, shooting him like that in front of her was as cold as any robot. Maybe there isn't too big a difference between the good guys and the bad guys.

It makes sense that Derek knew of his relationship with John all along. He even acted in an avuncular manner towards him. I do hope we would see him again in future seasons (maybe even as a regular), but I think there's enough of an "out" built into the finale if they can't get Brian Austin Green back.

The gang with gunsWhen I think of the climactic scene to any sci-fi series, I think of Johnny Cash music. Okay, that's not true. Perhaps it was some sort of playful irony having a black man fight a Terminator to a song by the Man in Black.

If the show does get picked up for a second season, we now have the mystery of why Cromartie didn't kill Ellison. Did he consider Ellison inconsequential? Or was Ellison necessary for Skynet's future?

John and CameronI can think of at least two ways in which Cameron could survive that blast. The first is that the explosion didn't affect her chip and she could repair herself and grow her skin back (although it was mentioned that Terminators could be destroyed with intense heat). Second, another Terminator model just like her is sent back.

Derek and JohnOverall, I enjoyed the series. The writing started weak but ended strong (my personal favorite was "Dungeons and Dragons," the episode in which Derek remembers the future). On the other hand, the ratings started strong and ended weaker. The ratings aren't in yet for the final two-parter, but I don't see a significant bump occurring. No doubt Fox just wants to sell the complete series on DVD and move on.

It's science fiction on Fox. It's on the bubble as of right now, but it's an expensive series that gets mediocre ratings by Fox's standards. I'm just waiting for the final word.

If The Sarah Connor Chronicles makes it to a second season, which question would you like answered the most?
Why did Cromartie not kill Ellison?740 (39.9%)
What's the fate of Derek Reese?233 (12.6%)
How did Cameron survive the explosion (if at all)?640 (34.5%)
What happened to the suicide girl from John's high school?240 (13.0%)

Cheers to a great first season! I really hope it does come back. I was skeptical at first but kept watching and now am hooked, especially after the ending (I'm sure Cameron will be fine after some skin repair)!
I think Cromartie didn't kill Ellison because at the time Ellison had his weapon down and was no longer a threat and not part of the mission objective but maybe there is more back story to it.
I think the most impressive part of the show was the fact that my wife got into it and enjoyed it. She normally isn't into these kinds of stories. The writers must be doing something right to have that kind of wide appeal. She had never seen the movies so we watched the first one and will have to catch up with T2 & maybe T3. :)

"They've been promoting the hell out of this show, with advertising"

That did not protect Drive from getting cancelled inside of eight days and four episodes.

The end scene in the pool when the strike force assaults Cromartie was simply a cheaper way to tell the story that we all knew was happening. I actually thought it was a very inventive bit of directing.

Let's face it, an hour long TV series is not going to have anything close to the budget of a major film. T2 cost $100 million to film in 1991 dollars. They are probably making each episode of TSCC for around 2 - 2.5 million. You aren't going to get the FX or action shootouts on that budget. It's up to the staff to figure out how to tell a compelling story each week and save up budget for FX only when needed. I thought the shootout scene did exactly in an interesting way.

The show has gotten better. Adding BAG as Derek did a lot to help out (which, after watching him on 90210, I'm shocked about).

Lena Headly is still too wimpy for me but I'm hoping it gets renewed.

Ras Thavas - Ok, I might buy that it could be too violent (although this is FOX, and the show has been pretty violent already), but then they should have shot it differently.

Perhaps have the Terminator come through the wall, knock Ellison off the balcony and into the pool, so we see through his eyes the destruction of his strike team.

cameron is fine. no other fire in the movies stopped a terminator.

now, if a second season isn't made, here's my little "season 2" in short form.

cameron has no skin. she either goes alone or they help her kill people to get skin and eyes and such.

ellison wasn't killed because he posed no threat(let his gun down and looked down-- a previous scene the terminator analyzed the swat team with amazed faces and guns down and it said "no threat")
plus he knows ellison has the files.

ellison gets locked up cuz of talking about killer robots. sarah reads about it and they all go to bust him out.

he helps jon in the future. he's one of the super soldiers.

and that's my version of season 2.

Some interesting info (wikipedia.org):
-Vick's chip 7.75 million viewers
What He Beheld 8.29 million viewers (highest number of viewers since Queen's Gambit [episode 5])
-"Executive producer James Middleton confirmed in Variety that the series will contain a link to Terminator 4 (a.k.a Terminator Salvation:The Future Begins)"
-"Josh Friedman stated in an interview that the events of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines occur in an alternate timeline from that of the TV series......In addition,Judgment Day in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, takes place July 24, 2004 while in the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Judgment Day takes place in 2011."

"Who cares about her funeral... how about who she was and what the hell those paintings on the wall meant?"

It was strongly implied that the principal/counselor who questions Cameron about it was having an inappropriate relationship with the suicide girl. I don't know if they're going to follow up on it, but I think the pretty blonde girl at John's school is somehow involved.

"When I think of the climactic scene to any sci-fi series, I think of Johnny Cash music."

Did you listen to the words? All of the lyrics from that song are taken from/inspired by the Book of Revelations, and the beginning part is almost verbatim what Ellison said to Charlie earlier in the episode.
