Watercooler Talk: Who are the Oceanic Six?

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 14th 2008 3:26PM

LostOK, so we've all seen the latest episode of Lost and we now know who the Oceanic Six are.

Don't we?

There seems to be some confusion among fans as to whether we've seen the last of the six "survivors" (in quotes because who the hell knows what the end game will reveal). Up until last night's episode we saw that Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid definitely survived. Last night we were supposed to find out the last of the Oceanic Six. It was revealed that Sun survived too, but Jin died (possibly on the island, but that's another plot point to be revealed later).

So if we count Sun that's five (Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, and Sun). Who is the sixth person? ABC has been trumpeting for a week now that we would find out who the last survivor was in last night's episode, so if we're to take Lost producers and the ABC marketing department at their word, then Aaron has to be one of the survivors, whether he was on the flight manifest or not. Ben doesn't count, and just because they showed Michael was still alive last night doesn't at all mean that he is one of the six (his scenes were in the present, not the future).

So if we take the show by their word and last night's ep showed Sun to be the last of the six, then the Oceanic Six are Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Sun and Aaron. I think that a lot of people didn't really include Aaron in the mix because he was born later, but I think with what we know now he has to be the sixth person. Right?

Thoughts? Disagreements?

To "Hurley in the coffin": Wouldn't the coffin be xtra-large?

To "Who's in the coffin": Observation: The manager of the funeral-parlor is african-american. Maybe a hint, that he's mainly working in/for an african-american community. That would (amongst other reasons) hint at Michael in the coffin.

To "Who are the Oceanic 6": Proven beyond doubt are 1. Jack. 2. Kate. 3. Hurley. 4. Sayid. 5. Sun. Number 6 must be Aaron. Of course the media would count a baby! And even more so, if the "mother" of the baby is one of the other 5!

To "What's with Jin": Great idea of someone here in the blog, that there's a hidden camera in the tombstone and Sun is speaking with Jin, who's still on the island. But I doubt it. Much rather Jin is one of the 2 dead "brought back" from the island and buried with the date of his suppossed death during the crash. How he really dies and when will still be revealed, I guess.

The sixth one of the Oceanic 6 is in the coffin, and it was someone not well liked, or not well known. No one was at the funeral. Kate would not go, so it was not Sawyer. Ben is not a survivor; he was not on the plane and is living in hiding. Michael betrayed everyone, but has come back - why? To make amends? It could be Claire, and Jack went to the funeral out of guilt, as he will not see Aaron clearly out of guilt. But Kate would not be cold enough not to go. Julia? Jack loved her in a way, Kate was jealous, and no one trusted her. However, she was not a survivor either. By the way, did anyone catch the question "where would they get so many dead bodies" to put in the 815 cover up? The Dharma dead?

We don't know for certain that that is a "6" survivor in the coffin. It is probably someone from the island, my guess Michael under his alias, maybe even Ben, but if it was a "6" then one would imagine a media circus outside, especially when they saw a haggard looking Jack enter the funeral home, instead of that pitiful turnout we witnessed.

Hi! I've just been reading over all the theories...time on the island isn't the same as the rest of the world. As seen when the helicopter flew to the ship and the survivors were waiting for news. Anyone know the date the survivors think it is compared to the date the rest of the world think it is?

I thought, when the episode showing the casket aired, that it was Locke...thinking it still could be that he survived and later died. Noone would want to go see him except Jack hoping to get answers and maybe see Kate.

I think there's the possibility that Jin dies just as they leave the island, or on the way back, or something. Do we know that the Oceanic 6 are 'survivors' or just those who "made it back"? Because Jin can make it back -- dead -- and still be considered one of the six. As part of the cover up, they say Jin died on 9/22/04, and they just brought his body back.

Then again, wouldn't that be a pretty smelly body? I don't think anyone would buy that story.

But I don't think Aaron is one of them either. That would just be lame.

as for jins tombsstone did anyone else notice that there was a large mound of dirt and grass next to jins grave but no were else in the cemetary? if the family put stones up as memorials than was suns removed when she "came back" prego no less. and at this point sun is only 2 to 3 months prego so that is at least 7 months later. does anyone have a screenclip of when hurley went nuts in the cornor store, was there by chance a newspaper or something there that has a date? if hurley had not went nuts yet when he went to see sun, we are looking at 7 months of the island for him to go crazy, but when jack stop by to see him and play horse jack was just getting back in to seeing patients again. timeline is all screwed up

The babies don't count - There is obviously a time jump - did nobody notice Jin in the last episode buying the Panda? He is not part of the Oceanix six as he is "not himself" - The "oceanic six" are the six that survived & came back to the same time period.

Obviously they are only claiming 8 survivors to shield the ones who stayed on the island - and they left knowing they shouldn't - which is why they will return to the island again (after their "rescue")

The only reason 8 survivors were even mentioned in the story was that 8 people made it onto the boat but only 6 finished the journey home....I think.

People could still be on the island and there could be more hiding from the spotlight.

Aren't you supposed to put spoilers AFTER the break? Some of us are waiting for the DVDs and my eyes scan by and see that a major character dies? Come on now, a little compassion for those who aren't up to date!
