Lost audio podcast recap: March 22, 2008

Harold PerrineauABC posted another Lost audio podcast for the most recent episode, "Meet Kevin Johnson." Damon Lindelof rehashed last week's episode, confirmed the identities of the Oceanic Six, and discussed the remainder of Lost's fourth season. Here's a recap:

  • The title of the season's ninth episode is "The Shape of Things to Come."
  • We will learn more about the Black Rock and the four-toed statue, but not necessarily in a flashback.
  • The name Lapidus has appeared twice on Lost. Rick Lapidus' name was on the script in "Exposé," and Frank Lapidus is the name of the helicopter pilot this season. Writer Eddie Kitsis (who wrote "Exposé") loves the name, and wanted to use it on the show.
  • Last week's ABC promo was 100% accurate. The Oceanic Six are Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Aaron, and Sun.
  • We will get further confirmation of the identities of the Oceanic Six on a future episode.
  • In an earlier podcast, Lindelof and Cuse told fans that we would know who the Oceanic Six are after the seventh episode ("Ji Yeon"). They didn't say this to throw us off. Rather, they didn't want to spoil the ending of "Ji Yeon," in which Jin's flash-forward was revealed to be a flashback.
  • The scene with Tom and Arturo at the Hotel Earle was to clarify who the rumored gay Lost character was.
  • The "sickness" experienced by Desmond and some of the Freighties might have happened on the island before. This could mean a possible connection to the sickness mentioned by Danielle Rousseau.
  • The sickness could affect people differently on the island and outside of the "island realm." This could explain why the Freighties got sick and why the 815 survivors have not been ill. Desmond was more susceptible to the sickness because of his previous exposure to electromagnetic energy when he turned the Swan station's fail-safe key.
  • There won't be any follow-up scenes to show what happened to Locke, Eko, and Desmond when the Swan Station imploded. Fans should assume that they were somehow cast out of the station.
  • We will see another purple sky in the future. There will be another electromagnetic event this season.
  • Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse played a word association game with regard to the status of certain characters and creatures. The responses are as follows: Ben's mother = apparition; Sawyer's boar = animal; the spider that killed Nikki = monster; Hurley's bird = no comment; Dave = figment of imagination/apparition; Yemi = monster; the cat in "Enter 77" = coincidence; Walt = person (off the island), an apparition that may not be Walt (on the island), and also monster-related; the horse that Kate saw = undead, similar to Christian Shephard and Yemi.
  • Some fans believe that Aaron is in danger in the future due to Malkin's prediction in "Raised By Another." Malkin later admitted that he was a fraud in "?". According to Lindelof and Cuse, Aaron is in danger only if you believe his prediction was legit.
  • Charlotte's occupation is significant to her presence on the island. As a cultural anthropologist, she studies ancient cultures.
  • The writers' code name for the season finale's secret scene is "The Frozen Donkey Wheel."
  • There will be a special video podcast with Damon and Carlton on April 18. Viewers will have an opportunity to ask questions via videoconference. ABC will have a page live by April 14 that viewers can use to submit their written questions and contact information. If ABC likes your question, someone will contact you with a request to submit your question on video. You must be over 18 and have the ability to videoconference. The page will be on ABC's Lost website by the 14th.

Jojee, it wouldn't be the first time ABC has revealed something in a promo that was a spoiler. It happened in the 1st or 2nd season, although exactly what it was escapes me, but I remember one of the writers saying at the time that ABC prepares the promo's and the Powers that Be on the show don't see them beforehand. If I'm wrong, someone can correct me and maybe fill in the missing info if I'm right, too.

As for Aaron being one of the 6, doesn't bother me at all. As I've said before.as long as the information is revealed in a timely manner and is reasonable, I'm fairly content with the story. Does it really matter if it's Aaron or someone else?

I'm not getting the aaron hate.

I'm not getting how it was supposedly revealed in a promo that he was one of the six when the promo didn't show it being aaron just that that episode is going to reveal one of the six (which was already being thrown around by the characters so really ABC has nothing to do with it).

Also I'm not sure why people are under the impression that Aaron is seen as Kates biological son to the rest of the world. There has been nothing in any of the episodes that made me think that. The whole reason that the lawyer was so keen on putting Aaron "on the stand" wasn't because she had a kid but because she "saved him". Its also pretty clear they set that up with having 8 survivors only to go down to 6 (Jin is the other one, see how thats working now)

Now the only question becomes what happens to claire? Does she really die like Jin does or does the divide between the camps really become that great?

Kate, being an escaped murderer facing a long prison sentence, would not be allowed to adopt or even have custody of Aaron, regardless of whether or not she saved him from the island. The only way she could have custody was if everyone believed that it was her natural baby.

And generaly speaking airplanes don't split in two over hidden islands populated by crazy sepretists that die when they try and have children. Guess real world logic doesn't hold very fast in fictional TV shows.

IMO it was fairly clear from the episode that Kate wasn't trying to pass Aaron off as her own.

Why would there have been 8 survivors unless they were counting Claire? Like I said its the same with Jin and Sun. The only reason to include the extra "survivor" is if there was a story that needed to be told about them. If the 8th was John Locke it wouldn't serve anyone's purpose. They'd get back and say "Oh yeah Locke made it off the plane but then died too" and no one would really care. "That guy that worked in a box factory...thats a real...loss".

Now you make up a story about a pregnat woman managing to make it off the plane only finally subcome to the elements but not before entrusting the life of her new born son to the woman that saved them all and yeah, in the fictional world we have, I think its going to hold some weight.

Thats the only reason I can see that the lawyer would of wanted to use Aaron as a character witness in the first place (which again, irl there probably aren't many lawyers that are going to try and use a two year old who was only an infant at the time as any kind of witness). It has to build on the lie about Kate managing to save them all and keep them alive until rescue.

Aaron as one of the 6 is lame. As the world is lead to believe, Aaron is Kate's son. And regardless of time off the island vs time on the island, the US Marshall's did not "know" Kate was pregnant. Putting her in the less than 3 month time period. And this is discounting the possibility of a physical after being arrested in a foreign country and being remanded to US officials. This would cause at least 7 months to pass. An Aaron is not a newborn. Whatever month math is used, it would not add up. And with the world at large believing them to be dead and the 815 in the trench would be exposed as a hoax. People would investigate. It is a poor attempt at misdirection.
And who says Jin is dead. The date on the tombstone is the date of the crash. Who's to say he did not stay on the island and that is part of everyone's guilt of not showing up for the birth. More than likely it is just a memorial headstone. It is unlikely that they were able to bring Jin's body back. And if they did they would be refered to as the Oceanic 7.

If ABC wanted to reveal a major secret on the show, Carlton and Damon could stop them. Instead they had ABC adjust the hint so that we would wait until after episode 7 to learn the Oceanic Six. So they might not write them but they are definitely shown then before they are aired. Its one thing to hint someone is going to die in an upcoming episode, another to reveal the people who off the island in a promo. If you don't watch promos, you would have missed an important piece of the show. Leave the story in the show. Don't put it on webisodes or books or games.

I hate Aaron being Oceanic Six because it was revealed in a promo. THAT was bad writing. They should have just revealed him being with Kate and not Claire, and let the revelation of him being part of the Oceanic Six come out later in the story. Who the Oceanic Six were was not important until the writers made it so! Jack and Kate at the airport in the season three finale was exciting without giving them a title.

ABC is responsible for the promos from what I understand, not the writers.

"The Frozen Donkey Wheel" sounds interesting.

Aaron being one the Oceanic Six is just smart and good writing.

Why? Because it did throw people off on predicting who the six were. Good writing isn't always predictable, yet it still made sense. Now we get to wonder what happens to Claire/Kate in the future. Good stuff.
