30 Rock is heading to MILF Island

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 25th 2008 3:02PM
30 Rock Remember that 30 Rock episode where Jack mentioned to Liz that he was working on a new reality show titled MILF Island ("25 super hot moms, 50 sweaty eighth grade boys, and no rules!")? You probably thought that it was just a one episode throwaway joke, but that's actually the name of a new show that's going to be the subject of the April 10 episode of the NBC series.

This is probably going to have the FCC and parents groups tearing their hair out, because they'll probably want to fine the show for saying bad things but won't be able to, because nothing bad will actually be said. It will all be about the show assuming viewers already knowing what "MILF" stands for. And if you know what MILF stands for, well, you're already going to hell.

This is similar to the famous Seinfeld episode "The Contest," where the entire episode was about masturbation but they never actually uttered the word. I do find it odd that, in The Washington Post, you can't even put the letter that the bad word begins with. So they had to actually print "MIL [letter that's been deemed too naughty by The Washington Post when followed by M, I, and L"). That's really bizarre to me.

I abhor the whole idea of this MILF island thing only because its using 8th grade boys. Use males that would be of legal age. Its not right that a network can use that idea on TV but if an individual writes something like that on their blog they can get prosecuted for a sex crime.

Lucy, grab the DVDs of Arrested Development, you'll be in stitches :)

The fact that The Post won't print the F-word (or even references to it) explains why you never see letters to the editor about Tom Shales.

I was just going to mention FUBAR and SNAFU. It's a violation of AP style to use either, at least when I worked at a newspaper a little over a decade ago. MILF would definitely be in that mold.

This is silly. Has the Washington Post ever used the word "snafu" before? Maybe "fubar" in a tech oriented column? We've reached the point where even the mention of "the letter" is illegal. This is why people don't care for these self-righteous newspapers anymore (and instead read self-righteous blogs).

Also, obligatory male sleazeball comment... will Tina Fey be on MILF Island? Where do I get an application?

As a parent, I extraneously object to MILF Island and cannot believe NBC will air such a show. I will be filing a complaint with the FCC... blah blah blah. Bring on the MILFs!

Good actors with great writing. Its not too hard to get it right. If you asked me in 2005 if 30 Rock was going to make it, I would have told you that NBC can't have two shows about sketch comedy considering the looming success of Studio 60. (I must admit that I am one of the few who miss that show) But Tina Fey and Alec Balwin have great chemistry and even better timing. I do not think Dr. Leo Spaceman could have concocted a better cocktail of humor. Can't wait for new episodes!

This is what I love about 30 ROCK. They mention something in one episode that seems like a throwaway and come back to it several episodes later, like they did with Jenna's movie, The Rural Juror (one of the funniest episodes ever!). I've missed 30 ROCK and can't wait for it to return!!!!
