American Idol: Top 8 Perform

American Idol 7 - Top 8
(S07E28)
This is a big week for American Idol. We have three episodes; the performance and results shows sandwiched around the two-and-a-half hour "Idol Gives Back" star-studded spectacular airing tomorrow at 7:30 ET. But first, we have a theme of "Inspirational Songs" and eight Idol contenders to get through tonight. Join us, won't you, for another spectacular non-star-studded live chat during tonight's episode, starting just before 8:00pm ET.

You can join the chat by following this link. Look for the full episode review right here later tonight.

As this week is "Idol Gives Back," Paula dressed up for the occasion in a lovely strapless cocktail dress. And Kristy dressed up by wearing white jeans. Tomorrow is the big show, though most, if not all, of it was taped this past weekend. In keeping with the theme of charity and hope and love and all that stuff, tonight's theme is "Inspirational Songs."

Michael Johns - "Dream On," Aerosmith
I won't say that I was feeling the neckerchief, but he continues his string of solid song choices and powerfully controlled vocals. Looks like someone wants to make a competition of it. This is one of my favorite songs and I've got to give mad props to Michael for even handling the Steven Tyler wailing at the end of his arrangement.
Judges: Randy thought it was a pretty good song choice, but there were pitch problems and he doesn't think that performance is the kind of singer Michael is. Paula disagreed, saying he sounded as good as he looked and thought he was unbelievable. Simon thought it was a good performance, but agrees a bit with Randy in that he doesn't think Michael works as a "wannabe" rock star. He works better as a bluesy/R&B artist for him.

Syesha Mercado - "I Believe," Fantasia
Syehsa, Ramiele's roommate, says that Rami's working hard and doing well. Is this the first time we've had someone tell us how the just-eliminated contestant is doing? Always risky is singing a former Idol winner's song on the Idol stage. But Syesha has a tendency to reach very ambitiously, and more often than not she reaches that mark. Tonight I really enjoyed the tenderness in her voice when it started before she went into the expected belting. Overall, I think it was a great performance at just the time she needed it. She faltered ever so slightly just before the falsetto at the end, but still it was impressive for me. I could be biased though as I thought Fantasia's performance of this was incredibly moving when she won the show.
Judges: Randy gives her credit for taking on such an ambitious song but didn't feel a connection to it the same way Fantasia did. Paula agreed that not many people can take on a song or singer like Fantasia, but still thought this was one of her most shining nights. Simon said she sang it very well, but it lacked that big wave of emotion that Fantasia delivered.

Jason Castro - "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," as performed by Israel "Iz" Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole
Iz's performance of this was with ukelele accompaniment, so Jason also played the ukelele. I thought the piece lost a bit when the strings came in behind him, but this was a brilliant song choice and arrangement for the folksy Jason. The first three contestants must have been inspired by the festivities of the week as they really stepped up their game impressively for me. All three were true to their personal styles and very good in them.
Judges: Randy said that was the hottest performance of the night so far. Paula thinks he has the most definitive sound. It was a perfect song choice and he did a great job with it. Simon hadn't heard that version much before tonight but thought Jason's performance of it was fantastic.
DOUBLEPLAY - It doesn't happen at all some weeks and sometimes it happens multiple times, but for the most part, it is rare that a performance is so good that I want to go back immediately (the joys of DVR) and watch it again.

Kristy Lee Cook - "Anyway," Martina McBride
I think Ramiele would have really been able to shine with this theme. That said, I went into this thinking Kristy would do well with it, too. She's very smart with song choices generally. And tonight she chose a very straightforward song with limited vocal range, but one that reaches out to pull the heartstrings of heartland America. She knows how to reach her audience. She reached a bit farther than her voice could handle at a few points, but as expected and in continuing with the trend of the night, Kristy pulled off one of her better performances of the season.
Judges: Randy said despite a few pitch problems he loved that. Paula thought it was her best performance by far of the competition. Simon thought that she not only showed who she was as an artist, but also did "very good." He agreed with me that it was a smart song choice appealing to her audience.

David Cook - "Innocent," Our Lady Peace
In his opening video, David had a normal hair cut which blew my mind. The shorter cut works for him but the style tonight was a bit top-heavy for me. And for the first time in a long time, I wasn't blown away when he started his performance. But by the middle of it, his vocals just pulled me in and I found myself loving it anyway. Not the best we've seen him, but still a good performance.
Judges: Randy wasn't sure it was one of his strongest weeks either; it fell short for him. Paula, however, thought it was just great. Simon, disagreed with her and thought it came across as pompous, citing the white jacket as a reason. Simon thought it was his weakest performance in the last few weeks.

Carly Smithson - "The Show Must Go On," Queen
Yet again, the contestants this year want to tackle Freddie Mercury. Carly has the vocal capabilities to handle the song, but it doesn't really work for me. Don't get me wrong, she can sing and sings parts of this very well, but the arrangement and the various parts where she wailed seemed as if she tried a bit harder than necessary in the arrangement. It was inconsistent for me.
Judges: It started off good, got a bit pitchy in the middle and wound up just okay for Randy. Paula said that while her voice is pretty perfect, there was no connection from Carly to the audience. It was a disconnect. Simon countered last week's comments to say she looked good, but thought her song choice unusual. He thought it was oversung and ultimately it came over as angry and out of control. He predicted she could be in trouble after that.

lick those lips!David Archuleta - "Angels," Robbie Williams
David did not stop smiling once during his interview with Ryan. Does he do it out of nervousness? He performed this from behind a piano and I hoped and prayed he wouldn't get up halfway through to really emote the "meaning" of the song, as I tire of cliched performances. It was weird for me tonight as David was great on the more powerful passages of the song, but it sounded off-key and weak during some of the softer lines. In the end, though, this was one of the most authentic performances we've gotten all season from David. And he stayed his ass behind the piano like he should have.
Judges: Randy thought the moment at the end with the runs and the piano pause was his hottest moment all season. Ultimately, it was crazy and he loved it. Paula said simply, "Fantastic." Simon said it was the best song choice of the night, but it wasn't David's best vocal, ending stronger than it began. Nevertheless, he has nothing to worry about in the voting.

Brooke White - "You've Got a Friend," Carole King
Brooke let someone else play the piano and went with a simple dress, a mic stand and her voice. It is a beautiful song and fits the mellow tones of Brooke's voice, but was that performance memorable or impressive enough to stand out on the night? I think Brooke is very fortunate she went last as I think had she gone first the audience would have forgotten she was even on the show by the end. At least she didn't try to dance. But she did talk as usual throughout the judges' critiques.
Judges: Randy wasn't mad at her for that performance, but it was only okay for him. The song had a special place in Paula's heart and thought it was a definitive performance of it by Brooke and a good cap on the evening. Simon likened it to a pleasant walk in the park. It wasn't original, but it was pleasant.

Remember that there are no eliminations tomorrow night. Instead we have "Idol Gives Back," starting before prime time even, at 7:30/6:30pm Central Time. Watch and call in and go to the Idol Gives Back MySpace page to donate and then come back here on Thursday for a special elimination episode at the usual time.

I could not believe that Michael John got voted off!!!!!!!!!!!
These 12 to 15 year old teeny boppers must be im and text messaging for their teeny bopper idols for two hours on the nights they can cast a vote.
Michael John was a sexy, handsome, mature contestant with stage presence and a good voice.
I cannot find another explanation than those mentioned before why he got voted off.
I think they should create teen idol so that those prepubescent girls can have their very own Idol show.
As for me I am debating whether I should continue to watch American Idol with the departure of Michael John!!!!!!!!!!!

I am really surprised that several people have said that they are tired of David A. I personally can't hear enough of him. I think it's so refreshing to hear gospel as opposed to the Naked Bros. Band, singing "I don't want to go to school". I am not a religious freak and don't go to church every Sunday but I want my children to believe in God and I think every possitive exposure that they can get to God is only to their benefit! I am frustrated that even on Nick T.V. kids are over and over being taught that hating school is cool! I'd much rather have them listen to David A's music. I think most good parents would agree that it's a lot healthier!

I honestly don't get the hype about David A. He is a good singer, but doesn't have much range, and he forgot the words on one night, he just doesn't really impress me like he does others. I think the version of Angels he did this week came NO WHERE near the original, I didn't like it at all. David C. had a bad night, but he's definitely the best in my eyes, and should be the ultimate winner. As far as the others, I didn't think Carly was as bad as everything thinks, I still think she's in the top 4 performers on there. Syesha was bad, she wouldn't have sounded good at all without the choir singing at the same time as she was. Kristy Lee stepped it up this week, Jason did too, I really liked him. Brooke was totally boring. Michael was really good - he is also one of the top 4 in my opinion. I think either Syesha or Brooke should go home this week.

The final three will be the two David's and MJ. I personally think that Syesha belongs in the top three based on her vocals but her personality comes across as too much diva and it turns people off. David Cook should win based on his overall talent and performance. Archuleta can continue with the ballads but he needs to do something more with them. Lets hear his high range or hold some long notes or if he is a Josh Groban wannabee, go ahead and sing YRMU. He just plays it so safe.

Joe,

You seem to be furious when people criticize David A. I think you know that AI is something more than a singing competition - that has been demonstrated through the years over and over again. Think about it - would Jordin have really won over Melinda Doolittle last year if it was only about who was the better singer? Would Taylor Hicks have won over some really great talent that year like Kat McPhee or Chris Daughtry, and would any of them have won over the truly golden throat of Elliot Yamin? The ability to connect and a strong presence is a must for ANY performer to succeed. Its nice that you want to boil it all down to its purest intent, but the producers long ago shredded that notion themselves.

David probably is overcoached and told how to smile, and counseled on song choice, etc. And maybe he will someday develop a stage presence and a style, but he doesn't have them now. What he has is a decent set of pipes which he uses to bore us to death with a never-ending succession of safe ballads that are guaranteed to make everyone's grandmother clutch her chest and proclaim him the sweetest thing ever. Its not enough to win, or at least it shouldn't be.

Frankly, the judges have been giving him a bit of a free pass on his song choices - generally, they seem to consider ballads safe, and usually only tolerate it from time to time; singers who rely on them again and again usually get ripped to shreds.

Lastly, you aren't seriously holding David A as more talented than Buddy Holly are you??!!!!

Yikes.

"Lastly, you aren't seriously holding David A as more talented than Buddy Holly are you??!!!!"

You bet your sweet patootie I am.

I am talking ONLY about SINGING.

Buddy Holly's voice was only marginally good, and only for his own material. There was nothing fluid or trained about it. Just adequate for the nonsense he put out. Talk about comfort zones! I doubt he would have EVER ventured outside of his.

I understand his placement in the progression of pop music, but that doesn't make me a fan of his.

Also, I understand the vicissitudes of individual fan bases. One succeeds on AI if one's fans like you enough. But....you ain't gettin' nowhere on that show if you can't SING.

Daughtry would have won if his fan base hadn't become complacent. McPhee would have won if she hadn't come across as being so inconsistent. Yamin was lucky to get as far as he did, but his look at the time hurt him (after all, the audience SEES as well as hears).

I understand that these contestants are at the mercy of a fickle and jealous public (yes, jealous....jealous that someone can do something that THEY can't); therefore, the BEST singer might NOT win. If the best singer in any season were to have won, then Tamyra Gray would have kicked Kelly Clarkson's ass, and Taylor Hicks would have been voted out early and never made the top 12 (the man truly is third-rate). And Melinda Doolittle would have won last season. So I perfectly understand that other variables are at play in the weekly voting.

In fact, the two best seasons were Season 2 and Season 4. The final two in both these seasons WERE the best of the top 12, and for me, it was a toss-up both seasons as to who would win. There was no clear winner for me, and I can't complain that Ruben and Carrie were the winners.

But David A. has a truly gifted voice. I would agree that he might want to stretch his ability and try some other type of music, but my suspicions are that his control-freak dad is pulling his strings here, and so David sings what dad wants him to. I don't think, though, that this makes him boring. Others in the competition are textbook boring--Kristy Lee and Brooke come to mind right away--but if you notice, ALL the contestants have pretty much stayed in their own comfort zones--David C. has stayed rockish, Jason has stayed alternativy, Brooke has stayed folky/poppy, Syesha has stayed Whitneyish, Michael has stayed front-man rockish, Kristy Lee has stayed Carrieish, etc.

As for being furious when David A. is criticized, it's the shallowness of the criticism that steams me, not that he gets criticized at all ("His smile creeps me out....he bores me cuz he sings ballads....he's too young to be singing what he sings....etc.). Instead of harping on his song choice, let's hear criticism of HOW he sang, not WHAT he sang. A lot of the negativity smacks of just plain out-and-out spitefulness and, yes, jealousy.

So please stop singling out David A. for being guilty of something everyone else is equally culpable. If indeed everyone stays true to form and plays it safe in their comfort zones, then the two Davids are the best singers of the lot. If one of them should be voted off before the final, then Michael will be one of the last two. I don't see any of the women making it. And Jason is a flat-line.

I actually loved Jason Castro this week, which is weird because up until now I've been pretty unimpressed by him. But I really liked his performance. It just had a very sweet, low key indie vibe that I really liked. Michael Johns was also great in my opinion. But it all went downhill from there.

Syesha was shouting most of her song. Kristy Lee just annoys me in a way that I can't quite put my finger on. David Cook wasn't too great; Simon called him "pompous" but to me, he actually seemed to be lacking some of the confidence and swagger that have made his performances so great the last few weeks. I agreed with Simon that Carly seemed too angry. David Archuleta was once one of my favorites but I'm bored to death with his "inspirational" song choices. And Simon was right, when he hit the high loud notes his voice was great but the low softer verses were very shaky. And Brooke? Sorry but I thought it was the worst of the night. She was way too melancholy. The song is supposed to be somewhat positive because after all, "you've got a friend"; Brooke sang it like it was a damn funeral dirge.

Oh the critic, the critics. Well, despite the "ripoff" of the great IZ version of Over the Rainbow (that not many people know) by Jason C., the guy did a very good job, by any standard, using his unique vocal style. The notes were there and he showed good emotional edge. So back off. And, before you pounce on Archie, using Simon's "nasal" remarks (admittedly nit picky as noted by Cowell himself) as fodder, listen again and see that the kid has real chops. Of course the beginning was more "nasally" and breathy compared to the end section. This is called "dynamics", which to anyone with any minimal amount of musical knowledge (apparently very few commenting here) is an essential musical technique. Other than these two, the rest gave immediately forgettable performances. Time to put the subjective soapboxes away.

Jason completely screwed up the lyric.

That is NOT how the song goes. I was stunned that none of the judges called him on it.

I've heard the Iz version, and I'm not impressed. It's squishy and infantile.
