The Daily Show: April 8, 2008 - VIDEOS

by Annie Wu, posted Apr 9th 2008 8:38AM
Jon Stewart"Dick Move of the Week": A cheap shot from the Barack Obama campaign last Wednesday. To lure youngsters away from a Bill Clinton speech on-campus, Obama supporters gave away tickets to a Dave Matthews concert. Ouch. Wow, The Daily Show has been doing all sorts of things to my vocabulary. After the show permanently ingrained "douchebag" into my everyday conversations, I now fear that "dick move" is going to start working its way into my language. Hey, when you watch a show four times a week, mannerisms are bound to get picked up. This also poses the possibility that I'll start having nightmares about animated purple penises wearing Chuck Taylors.

"Airplane!": Hundreds of planes have been grounded for re-inspection, because apparently people who have been flying around in those big death traps have been closer to death than previously thought. It's good to know that my shoes have been more thoroughly checked than an airplane at the airport.

Disheveled Senior Washington Correspondent Jason Jones reported on the possibility that this is all part of the Bush administration's plan to kill us all. Has Jones finally dropped his aggressive douchebag correspondent persona? Lately, I don't find him quite as annoying as usual. The back-and-forth with Jon was actually pretty funny ("It's just a crow! You know we tape outside in the cemetery...")

"Back in Black": Hey there, Lewis Black! I didn't think we'd be seeing him again, what with his new Root of All Evil show and all. I guess I had forgotten that his program is set up more like a "conventional" program (as opposed to the likes of TDS and The Colbert Report, which tape four days a week). Black commented on celebrity endorsements for candidates. I'm still disturbed that Heidi Montag has any say in ANYTHING, but I suppose Oprah is really bigger fish. No one should really take her seriously though, as she expresses the same amount of excitement for Barack Obama as she does for the cast of Desperate Housewives (and her Favorite Things cookies).

The night's guest was Cokie Roberts, NBC News commentator and author of Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation. When she said that Abigail Adams had endorsed Hillary Clinton and didn't explain it, I felt a rush of panic for Jon, sitting so close to a crazy person. It's a good thing she meant Laura Linney, otherwise the interview would have kicked off on a really awkward note. Anyway, sassy lady historians generally make good guests, as they have fun stories to share. Also, they have a tendency to share their founding father crushes (Roberts kind of has a thing for Washington, apparently), which makes me feel a little better about that time I called FDR a fox.

Jon/Stephen: Stephen Colbert gets shot again, I laugh uncontrollably again. Moment of Zen: Fran Drescher and Ben Stein? Do my eyes deceive me?

Google Translation says:

In France we continue to love America despite your mistakes in Iraq (and the fact that many of you do not recognize), insults, wine in the streets emptied, boycotts, human rights that you do not respect (guantanamo), or your show televisés everything that is French is a target ...

L'Amerique has changé.Elle is no longer what it was, and this is sad.

We have understood this in 2003 when we wanted to act to prevent friends. What has resulted from you racist behaviour (I desolé but it is the word and there is no other). I did not think that I will one day use it to describe the America ( Part of America). The fact that a commentator can make such declaration in a show famous and appreciated without anyone at home would react, it shows what you are now.

We are and we will remain friends (even if you do not understand), but for how much longer ...

Sadmann, I'm not really sure what you are talking about here. When was the show being racist? and towards whom?

L'Amerique a changé.

Goodbye America

I don't understand the usage of that clip for moment of zen at all! It's from Feb. 29th, not old enough to be retro, but dated and should be identified in that regard.
Being on four times a week I think the audience expects a certain level of currency.

I think it was used to complement Lewis Black's piece on celebrity endorsements.

My favorite use of "dick move" is in The Venture Bros. episode Showdown at Cremation Creek (Part 1). I figure you watch it since you just wrote a post about the upcoming season.
