Is this a cool DVD package for Mad Men or what?

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 10th 2008 2:26PM

Mad Men DVDIt's interesting how some shows that come out on DVD are really bare affairs, with basic packaging and little or no extras. That's why it's great to see that the people behind the new Mad Men DVD (out July 1) have gone all out.

That's the DVD on the right, made to look like an old-fashioned cigarette lighter (if you haven't seen the show, it's set in 1960 and just about everyone smokes). You don't see many DVD packages, or any other packages for that matter, that actually celebrate the pastime of smoking (except, um, cigarette packages). But this one is even better than I could have ever imagined. It looks like a lighter when closed and it also opens like a lighter opens.

And did I mention there are a ton of extras?

The four-disc Mad Men set won't just have a commentary on one or two episodes like you see in many sets, it will have cast and crew commentaries on every single episode! There will also be several features in the set, exploring the behind the scenes world of the show (production design, fashions, the cast), advertising in the 50s and 60s, and a look behind the music of the show.

The linked article says:
"The Blu-ray Disc release will come on 3 discs, priced at $49.99 SRP, with video in 1080P High Definition 16x9 Widescreen, and sound in English - 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio."

Yippee!

Where's the Blu-Ray edition? Mad Men deserves to be seen in HD.

If the DVDs will be red and if they flip upwards like it looks on the image: yes.

Otherwise: *yawn*

The extras are far more interesting than the plastic they come in. Commentaries on every episode are the reason why I bought all the Stargate SG-1 box sets. I think it is a must nowadays where you can easily just record the shows when they air on tv, edit out the commercials on your own and then save everything to DVD-R manually. Or download the stuff.
