Couric may be traded for Cooper (and an intern to be named later)

Anderson Cooper and Katie CouricWith the rumors swirling around that Katie Couric may leave (or be removed from) the CBS Evening News soon after the 2008 election, speculation of what she might do and who might take her place has also been in the air. The latest speculation by insiders, though, is an interesting one, so interesting that it just might make complete sense.

According to the New York Daily News, "TV insiders," whoever they are, think that a trade of sorts might take place: Anderson Cooper comes to CBS to anchor the Evening News, while Couric goes to CNN to host a talk show in the 10 PM slot where Anderson Cooper 360 currently resides. The idea is to have Couric eventually take over for Larry King.

As I said, such a trade makes complete sense: While I personally think Couric is doing a decent job in the anchor chair, a news-oriented talk show does seem like it would be more in her wheelhouse. As for Cooper, well... the man's already got a full head of grey hair and can read off a TelePrompter. What more does he need to become a great evening news anchor? Seriously, though, he's already demonstrated he's as good in the field as he is in the studio, proving he can anchor a broadcast from wherever the news occurs. He's a five-tool player who would slip into the CBS anchor chair pretty easily.

Ok, enough with the baseball terminology. But the talk of a trade always gets me started.

"As I said, such a trade makes complete sense".

This would be a bad move for Cooper.

He makes plenty of money at CNN, and gets a lot of freedom and variety with his longer show. He looses all that is him he becomes the CBS anchor (a position of diminishing prestige).

I think Anderson Cooper is the only person worse for the job than Katie Couric.

Couric would be a good fit for Larry King, considering it's just a talk show and hardly does news.

This sounds highly plausible, Joel, but I can't see Katie going off network, even to a cable giant like CNN. Remember, what happened to Paula Zahn? Katie's not leaving New York and she's not giving up her perch unless CBS gives her something big. Maybe her own TV magazine -- Couric's 48 Hours or something. And you know she won't leave a dime on the table.

I love Katie Couric as CBS news anchor. She is the reson I watch CBS evening news. If she goes I'll not be watching it any more. I think she is getting shafted as always.
