Moonves says Katie is the CBS anchor "long into the future"

Katie CouricOf course, to paraphrase a former President, it all depends on what the meaning of "future" is.

Making an appearance at the daily noon CBS Evening News staff meeting today, CBS CEO Les Moonves said that despite what you've heard recently, Katie is their anchor today, tomorrow, next week, and long into the future.

Now, let's take that phrase word by word...

Is she going to be the anchor "today?" I would assume so, since it would be a pretty quick decision for her to leave right after the meeting. So we can assume that she'll be there today. Will she be there tomorrow? Ah, this is where it gets tricky. Tomorrow is a Saturday, and Couric doesn't anchor on Saturdays! So the statement isn't technically accurate. He also said that she'd be the anchor next week, and I'm sure that's a safe bet too.

And so we come to that "future" part. The future could be 2009, 2016 or it could be four minutes from now. It's still up in the air really if Couric will be gone before the election or after the election.

Sounds like a classic Nixonian Non-Denial Denial.

So he essentially, by saying "long into the future", implied that she wasn't going to be replaced before the election... and to you that means it's still up in the air?

I think it's the *wrong* decision, sure, but I'd say with Moonves coming forward like this, she'll be sticking around.
