ABC wants you to get ready for Betty
There hasn't been a new episode of Ugly Betty since January. Can you believe it? If you're like me, and need a refresher course on all things Meade and Suarez, ABC.com has a few options available. Fashion TV's rhyming reporter, Suzuki St. Pierre, summarizes the first two seasons in a four-minute video. I had forgotten how much had happened in the last few Betty episodes.
Even more entertaining is the show's first video podcast, led by co-stars Michael Urie and Becki Newton (Marc and Amanda). In addition to recording a hilarious song about season two's storylines, the actors interviewed Jeff Beal, the show's composer. Beal discussed his professional background and told some of the stories behind fans' favorite original Betty songs. The podcast can also be downloaded for free on iTunes.
Here's a brief recap of Beal's interview:
- Jeff Beal and Becki Newton co-wrote "Gene Simmons Is My Daddy," the song Amanda sang in "A Thousand Words By Friday."
- Beal started out as a jazz trumpet player, and used to play in salsa bands on the weekend.
- The plink-plinks in the opening credits came about after Jeff Beal composed music for a scene in the pilot. Only the drum music was used for the scene (Amanda leading Betty down the Mode hallway on her first day), but Beal incorporated the rest into the show's theme.
The video podcast was a treat for Betty fans, particularly if you like watching Amanda and Marc pal around. Urie and Newton's song is accompanied by behind-the-scenes footage of their co-stars. Now I'm dying to see the season's final five episodes. Mission accomplished, ABC!
Ugly Betty returns this Thursday, April 24, at 8pm ET.
