Reaper: Rebellion

by Paul Goebel, posted Apr 23rd 2008 7:41AM

Donavon Stinson as Ted(S01E14) "You don't like banana splits? What are you some kind of a commie?" - Jerry

You know if any other show had written themselves into a corner the way Reaper did, they'd have a problem. Last episode they escalated Sam & Andi's relationship but, of course, by doing so, they revealed too much of Sam's secret to Andi. When that kind of thing happens on a show, it's usually the beginning of the end. We all know that if Andi ever joins Sam's band of demon hunters, the show will suffer. So what's the answer? Does he confess everything? Does she sneak around and try to catch Sam in the act? Does Andi come down with that disease we only see on TV, Convenient Amnesia? Luckily, this kind of thing isn't a problem for Reaper. All they have to do is slip a guy some cash, tell her a lie and the problem is solved. I love watching a show whose main characters have lower moral standards than my own.

I don't know why I've never mentioned this before but I think it's hilarious every time the devil strands Sam somewhere after they meet. I especially appreciate that they don't show it, because I love imagining Sam trying to figure out where he is and then finding his way home. I wonder how many times he's had to call Sock and Ben to pick him up.

Is it just me or was Missy Peregrym exceptionally sexy in tonight's episode? Maybe it was the way she took charge when she asked Sam on a date but whatever it was, she looked gorgeous.

The scene with Josie, Sock and Ted combined two of my favorite things about this show; Sock & Josie's love/hate relationship and Donovan Stinson's hilarious portrayal of a douchebag boss. Sock and Josie are like that couple who used to hate each other and then one night they hooked up and started dating. After that they had to be nice to each other which immediately killed the passion, so they broke up and went back to hating each other. I hope now that they've hooked up again they'll be smart enough to realize that it's her nastiness and his jackassery that brings them together. By the way, why does Ted have any information about "gay porn terminology?" Never mind, I don't want to know.

Well, it appears that most of you were right. Steve and Tony are planning a move against the devil and need Sam's help. As they get deeper into this storyline, it is becoming clearer that Sam and the devil's relationship goes way beyond boss and reluctant employee. I have a feeling that the season finale will shed some light on their actual relationship.

This wrinkle adds another interesting level to an already fascinating show. The first season hasn't even ended and already the weekly stories about escaped souls have become a background for what's going on with the characters. Not just Sam, but also the supporting characters. I will never understand why shows like Reaper and Veronica Mars have to struggle to find an audience and crap like Gossip Girl is a big hit.

Cubby's blood sucking tongue was probably the creepiest thing I've seen on this show so far. On one hand I really admire a show that can constantly top itself with repugnant imagery, on the other hand what kind of a sick mind comes up with this stuff? In any event, add the nightmare-inducing antagonists to the ever-growing list of why I love this show.

I doubt this will ever happen, but for the record, Ray Wise deserves an Emmy for his work on this show. Anyone familiar with his career already knows he's a brilliant actor (If you haven't seen Good Night and Good Luck, you're missing out), but watching him on this show is like taking an acting class from a master. Also as one of the many Americans who suffer from lactose intolerance, I was particularly touched by his inability to enjoy ice cream.

As we expected, the devil was using Sam for his own evil plan, but isn't that the basis of their relationship? The only I question I still have is whether or not Tony blames Sam for what happened.

Sometimes when I am reviewing a show, I have to really search to come up with enough things to say about it, which is why I love reviewing Reaper. Every episode has so much great stuff in it, I actually get jealous when it's not my turn to review it.

Who's relationship is least likely to survive?
Sam & Andi97 (32.1%)
Sock & Josie87 (28.8%)
Steve & Tony118 (39.1%)

I just finally got to see it streaming on CW's site -- it was preempted in Philly for baseball!

Love this episode. But I can't believe that nobody has commented on one of my favorite gags in the episode: the lawyer soul attacks Ben with LEECHES!

I thought this was the best episode yet. I like how they are not taking up the whole show to capture the soul so they can be doing bigger & better things the rest of the show. I thought Andi looked kinda trampy when she went to Sam's place. Her make-up & the lighting didn't mix well. She looked much better the rest of the time. How funny was Sock answering Josie's door in her ugly-ass robe? And Sock telling Ted that he hooked up her dvr - 2 times. Sock steals almost every scene he is in. If they screw up & cancell this show someone needs to give him a lead role in his own show. He also needs to play Jack Blacks brother in a movie. That would be awesome. This show had better get another year or I'm gonna be pissed. It's not like they're gonna have anything better to replace it with. Just keep it off Thursday night & it should be o.k.

I just realized something interesting. When Sam talks to Jerry about him getting thrown out of hell Jerry contrasts his ability to experience pure love to his belief that human's can't experience it. Then at the end, we see him snivel at the idea of human's becoming good.

This is the theme of one of the main original fall myths. Lucifer felt that the Angels should be second only to God, however God created man to take that place, with Angels being third. Lucifer looked down on man as inferior and imperfect and an usuper of the Angels' rightful place. This then caused him to rebel for his place back.

It seems like thats specifically the story being used here.

awesome, awesome episode. I still think that Jerry is really Sam's dad, which is why Sam's dad now hates the devil so much. I just hope when the show gets back to the normal routine everyone dosen't start saying how much they hate the show.

I wouldn't go so far as to compare this show to Veronica Mars (now that show had some great writing and characters off the bat) but I will say this show has gotten much better since the earlier episodes, and I really hope it gets a second season.

I think there is more to the Devil's relationship with Sam than we are led to believe. The whole mystery with the contract still has been wondering.

The finale will involve the Devil apparently having a change of heart and telling Sam that he *can* tell Andi what he does. And right after he does, Andi's supposedly dead dad will return, with tales of being in a coma or having amnesia and making a miraculous recovery. And then Sam will get a new assignment, and guess who it'll be?

I'm rooting for Ray. He is absolutely awesome. Wouldn't it be funny if SAM was Jerry's kid? Oh dear. And shows like Gossip Girl and other garbage don't make you think. You just sit like a zombie and watch, getting 'thrilled' by clothes and 'pretty faces.' Yawn.

Great episode. The only thing missing was Gladys. She hasn't been in the last few episodes; I hope they haven't dumped her character.
