The Daytime Emmy nominations announced

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 30th 2008 2:02PM
EmmyThe Daytime Emmy nominations were announced this morning on The View. My initial reaction is this: there are so many repeat nominees! This list is filled with actors who have won multiple times. Are the Daytime Emmys in a rut? I'm afraid so. This list seems very stale to me, not that many of these performers aren't worthy, but a lot of other worthy actors were completely overlooked. Again. Emmy could use an overhaul, but we'll discuss that another time.

Here are the main nominees -- and some comments -- and you can check out the complete list and a photo gallery of the Daytime Emmy nominees at AOL Television. On Friday, June 20, ABC will broadcast the awards in primetime (8-11 p.m. EST) from the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Outstanding Daytime Drama
General Hospital
Guiding Light
One Life to Live
The Young & the Restless

Here we have the usual suspects. Last year, Y&R and GL shared the prize. My choice would be OLTL this time around -- they had a great year and have been on the uprise. However, Y&R has a lot of actor nominations and that could mean another Emmy for the Bell show. I'd be flabbergasted if either GH or GL win. Both shows have received critical blasts this past year.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama
David Canary, Adam/Stuart, All My Children
Thaao Penghlis, Tony, Days of Our Lives
Anthony Geary, Luke, General Hospital
Peter Bergman, Jack, The Young & the Restless
Christian Jules LeBlanc, Michael, The Young & the Restless

Oy vey, this is really a rerun. Canary has been nominated 16 times for these roles, winning five Emmys. Bergman has 14 nominations (as Jack) and three wins; and Geary's had 12 nominations and five wins, too. LeBlanc won last year. Only Penghlis has never been nominated for an Emmy. The likely winner is LeBlanc or Geary.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama
Maura West, Carly, As the World Turns
Crystal Chappell, Olivia, Guiding Light
Nicole Forester, Cassie, Guiding Light
Michelle Stafford, Phyllis/Sheila, The Young & the Restless
Jeanne Cooper, Katherine, The Young & the Restless

More repeat contenders. Crystal won in support for this role; it's her first nom as lead actress. Michelle has five nominations and two wins, and Maura West won last year. The clear sentimental favorite is Jeanne Cooper. She's been nominated nine times, with no wins! They even gave her a Lifetime Achievement It's time for a win in competition. But don't be shocked if its Michelle again; she had great material and played those roles to the hilt.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama
Trent Dawson, Henry, As the World Turns
Daniel Cosgrove, Bill, Guiding Light
Brian Kerwin, Charlie, One Life to Live
Kristoff St. John, Neil, The Young & the Restless
Greg Rikaart, Kevin, The Young & the Restless

Brian Kerwin could be the surprise winner here, especially since his submissions will include scenes with Emmy-fave Erika Slezak (Viki). He's also new to daytime.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama
Kelly Menighan Hensley, Emily, As the World Turns
Heather Tom, Katie, The Bold & the Beautiful
Judi Evans, Adrienne, Days of Our Lives
Gina Tognoni, Dinah, Guiding Light
Tracey Bregman, Lauren, The Young & the Restless

Judi Evan won an Emmy as a younger actress years ago when she was on Guiding Light, so her win here may be getting nominated. Gina Tognoni, who won the year before last, is a likely repeat winner, coming off a showy year in which her character suffered a brain injury.

Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama
Van Hansis, Luke, As the World Turns
Jesse Lee Soffer, Will, As the World Turns
Darin Brooks, Max, Days of Our Lives
Tom Pelphrey, Jonathan, Guiding Light
Bryton McClure, Devon, The Young & the Restless

McClure was the winner last year, but Van Hansis as a major gay character in a prominent story is my guess for the win. He's got the buzz and he's doing a terrific job. I don't know how Pelphrey earned a nomination. He was barely on the show.

Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama
Jennifer Landon, Gwen, As the World Turns
Rachel Melvin, Chelsea, Days of Our Lives
Vail Bloom, Heather, The Young & the Restless
Emily O'Brien, Jana, The Young & the Restless
Tammin Sursok, Colleen, The Young & the Restless

Jennifer Landon will again, her third Emmy. All the other gals kind of blend together, if you ask me.

Outstanding Talk Show Entertainment
Ellen DeGeneres Show
Rachael Ray
The View

Ellen owns this award. She'll snagged her sixth Emmy in a walk. Rachael? Are they serious? As for The View, they'll remain the Susan Lucci's of daytime (before Susan finally won!).

Outstanding Talk Show Informative
A Place of Our Own
Dr. Phil
Tyra Banks

Sorry, Dr. Phil. I think Tyra is bringing home the Emmy. She was smoking this year, and Dr. Phil has been too grabby with the headlines.

Outstanding Talk Show Host
Ellen DeGeneres
Regis Philbin & Kelly Ripa
The Ladies from The View

No, Ladies. It's Ellen's Emmy.

Someone was actually hoping for Passions, are they on crack? I mean seriously, the only reason that show even remotely lived was because people loved laughing AT it.

I mean come on, it was thrown off daytime only to be picked up by some remote station on DirectTV that no one goes to, just because someone paid them to take it. And techniquely it doesn't qualify as Daytime anymore since it got kicked off.

You want to talk about shafts...how about Anthony Geary's nomination, he is never on GH...he has five already and could careless if he did win. and he never does anything special on the show, in 2007! another laughable nom.

Along with Rachel Melvin, I mean please....Darrin Brooks...and Judy Evans...when is the last time any of them did anything that wasn't fluff, or backdrop drama...no main story lines, and nothing worth remembering.

Ignore the actual talent guys...go for the pity votes!~

How about:
Kim McCoullough (with her fine HIV preg story)
Deidre Hall (with "Death of JB")
Even Susan Lucci (with her jail drama, and that is pushing it)
How about Minshew (with the Spike drama)

The list goes on....really this year's noms were freaking scary stupid. Either the academy is blind, or paid!

Kirsten Storms was robbed!! I am a long-time viewer of GH but '07 sucked!! Guza and his crew need to be run out of town. I think Laura Wright will make it in next year. Her work so far in '08 has been amazing. The noms for TS and VB are a joke. Oh well, I guess I will have to find something else to that Friday night.

Tyra Banks...rofl. Wow. The Emmys have zero credibility.

Awful, awful set of nominations. They're throwing a fit over on Goldderby, where the daytime geeks (and a lot of insiders) post.

All these noms for Young and the Restless? From what I understand, the show's producers used the writers' strike as an excuse to throw out head writer Lynn Marie Latham, who had sent Y&R into a downward spiral. I get this feeling that because Y&R is CBS' big cheese, that they felt they couldn't lobby for noms for Guiding Light or As the World Turns without "equal" attention for the Bell soaps.

The Supporting Actress category is a complete joke. No Kathy Brier or Catherine Hickland, who CARRIED One Life to Live on their backs this past year? If they give OLTL best soap, their omissions could be forgiven. But why do I have the hunch that they're not going to get that, either?

Nah, they didn't carry OLTL but they're certainly big parts of the show (well, not so much the role of Marcie these days). My only logical thought is that OLTL under its new head writer has become such an ensemble that by rewarding an individual (and as much as I like the character of Charlie, the part hasn't required any more acting chops than other OLTL characters such as--I don't know, Rex) actor/actress would sully its growing reputation.

I couldn't agree with you more! Y&R didn't deserve a nomination for anything! 2007 was the worst year in the history of that show! OLTL actors were robbed! The reason why NBC actors don't get nominated is because the network doesn't support them. They have managed to get rid of at least 5 soaps in the past 15 yrs., and have put DAYS on notice. Brier, Hickland, Watkins from OLTL, Sweeney, Madison & Hall from DAYS, and Christopher, Burton, Wright from GH should all be calling the cops. THEY WERE ROBBED..................

Wow, talk about shafting the best soap on TV: One Life to Live. If it doesn't win ODS, then this is a crock.

who doesn't LOVE Tony Geary, but honestly~ enough is enough!!
Laura Wright and Maurice Bernard ARE GH...

Thaao Penghlis is an excellent nod tho for his work on Days.

MB is eh. He doesn't have good material to work with so I won't blame him too much. LW is doing great, tho I'd like to see her character get some happy stories for once...

TG will always be great - tho, material provided.. not always as great.

If GH wins the big award I'll fall over.. i'm a forever-fan but until they get rid of Guza and his posse, the show will forever be stuck in a circle of repeated violence. Car crash, kidnapping, death, attempted murder, train crash, bomb, bomb, bomb, murder, drugs, explosion... and on. and on. and on.

I thought it was funny how going to break Sherrie Shepherd said something referring to the fact that no ABC soap stars had been nominated up to that point. It turns out there are only three, 2 for actor and 1 for supporting actor. Don't think Brian Frons can be happy about that.

Um... there's a reason Passions was cancelled... it was awful! i'm pretty sure that's the same reason it didn't get nominated for anything, either. Just because there were witches and the stories were filled with absolute absurdity doesn't mean it was original.

As usual, Passions gets the shaft. The only soap that is original. You would think they would get SOME kind of nod, considering it will be gone soon, and that there are a legion of loyal fans out there. Bah, Humbug.
