Why we need a Veronica Mars movie

by Debra McDuffee, posted May 7th 2008 11:05AM
Kristen Bell as Veronica MarsYes, I still mourn Veronica Mars. We all know season three wasn't up to par, but that is all the more reason to mourn what once was.

Jane's recent post, listing six reasons why we need a Las Vegas movie, inspired me to think about, and now write about, why we really need a Veronica Mars movie.

In some ways, the finale was a shout out to the Veronica Mars of old -- Logan was a downright jerk again, left only to his aggression and baser instincts; Veronica was stable and a goody-goody girlfriend (remember the Duncan days?) and Weevil got some balls and was up to his old tricks again. We liked all of that.

But still I want for more. No, not a lame FBI series six years in the future, but what life was like in the months following the finale. The finale, which was written only as a season, not a series, finale, left some unanswered questions. Some may argue they are better left unanswered, and if the questions were answered in the spirit of season three, then they'd be right.

But imagine, if you will, the top-notch writing of season one -- the mystery, the suspense, the characters, the layers of suspicion. I want it, I crave it, we need it, for all of these reasons:

1. What becomes of Vinnie Van Lowe? We love him, sometimes we hate him, but we always want screen time with him. Could this slick-talking P.I. really be mayor? Don't we want him to be, even just a little? Maybe so Keith can one-up him yet again ...

2. Is Keith mayor sheriff or not? Does he find everlasting love? We all want a happy ending for Keith, in his career and his love life. But do we want him to be sheriff, or should his P.I. biz take off and catapult him into fame? Is there another book in the works for Keith? So many unanswered questions ...

3. What of the LoVe? Do Veronica and Piz ever do the nasty? I have to say, I am on the fence about this one. I couldn't stand Logan as a LoVestruck fool; he was such a jealous pussy. I much prefer the angry-at-the-world Logan, but then Piz is all pussy, all the time. Is Veronica capable of a relationship with a non-pussy? There's an unanswered question.

4. Did Wallace just fade into the basketball scene at college? Poor Wallace, forgotten sidekick for the great and powerful Veronica. Was he destined for basketball stardom? Would he ever return from Africa? Would he ever have a pivotal role in a plot (subplot, microplot ... anything!) again?

5. What layers of intrigue lie beneath the handsome facade of Jake Kane? The fact that they brought Duncan's dad back into the story was one of the only ingenious things to happen in season three. OK, it was a little lame that he was basically in an adult fraternity, but there were hints that there was a lot of dirty stuff that he was into, just waiting to be exposed.

6. Have we seen the last of Duncan? Could he be "the one" for Veronica? Yes, he was the first in a long line of pussies for Veronica (see #3). But we got a sense that Duncan had a darker side. He called for a hit on Aaron Echolls, which shows that he has more balls than when he sent Meg the super-gay secret admirer gifts. Maybe he is finally ready to come back as a more mature and deserving man and claim Veronica's heart.

I guess since I probably won't be getting my Veronica Mars fantasy comeback movie anytime soon that the only way to get my VM fix is my cherished DVDs and maybe a cruise ... not!

i really need closure on this show! i would LOVE to see a movie-- perhaps chronicling Logan/Veronica's "epic" love (spanning continents, blood shed). I had a dream where Wallace and Logan were in business together (remember they did make a great team) and encountered a Duncan related problem so they needed to hire Veronica to investigate. Haha!

i LOVED season 2. not neccearly ALL the mysteries (the buss crash was really just too much though I did love Beaver's role in it all) but we really saw the characters grow a lot in that season, Mac was around more-- Wallace had a love triangle. And the epic speech by Logan at prom will go down as my favorite moment in television history.

We don't need either movie.

I liked the retooling towards FBI. That was interesting.

But nothing will ever come close to Season one of VM. The storyline was great. It was gripping until the end. And then there was nothing to work with for additional seasons. I wonder when the US networks will get it that it is possible to jus have ONE season of a show and be done with it. They should've done the same with Heroes. The first season was great up until the season finale which then robbed us of a real ending (while VM S1 had one).

So I don't really know what a movie would bring for either of these shows. I think nothing. There is nothing to go on in the first place.

Arrested Development needed a movie. These two shows don't.

Sigh, I super duper agree! I haven't watched S3 yet, LOL, but there are already a lot of questions left unanswered for me, as I can observe.. Like, in S2, who told the girl in the show where Veronica participated in to say that Lilly is saying she should've stayed away from her boyfriend..? I dunno if you remember that, it was in one episode (i forgot the name though) but, yeah. If you do remember, Jackie said the thing with the boob cream, but what about the Lilly thing?

Or wait, do we know about that in the future? Agh.

I really really want more VM. :(
Yes, I am still in S2 but thinking about S3 being the last season.. is just so heartbreaking.
Sigh. Didn't VM win for the Save a Show thingy? Guess it didn't work..

Sigh! We want more VM!!! :'(

We need a VM movie so we can see some full frontal Kristen Bell. Forgetting Sarah Marshall was very disappointing in that aspect. /just got back from seeing that movie

I would enjoy a Veronica Mars film, but fingers are at the moment crossed for an Arrested Development movie, which is much more necessary, imo - just to see talented writers writing more masterpieces for talented actors. It's a shame the quality shows take three or four years to drift into the mainstream conscience, or to be more precise it['s a shame networks are only looking a year or two into the future.

There's already a VM movie. It's called Brick. And it's as good as seasons 1/2.

Brick was awesome. Different tone and style though but I can people who like VM digging on Brick.

Also check out The Lookout - solid film noir/heist.

The CW was the reason season 3 was bad. It was unfocuesed because they took away the format of the show. Focus on one main season long mystery. When they couldn't do that and had to instead do three mini mysterys ok and with only 20 episodes instead of 22 or 23, then every felt rushed. There was on way that season 3 would be as good as the first two seasons. That being said, all those answers to your questions are probobly best left unanswered, or left to your own imagination. Kind of like who survived outside of the alley on "Angel", oh wait, that's been answered hasn't it?

I think a Veronica Mars movie would be great. They could do one when Veronica is in the FBI like that short 5? min pilot that made for a possible season 4.
