Grey's Anatomy: The Becoming

by Jonathan Toomey, posted May 9th 2008 1:02AM

Sara Ramirez and Eric Dane
(S04E14) "Hey, everything I did was consensual. In fact, some of 'em even begged for it." - Sloan

I'm gonna start at the end. Why? Because I loved it. More often than not Grey's Anatomy gets awfully convoluted; full of itself even. It makes me just want to yell at the TV and scream, "Get to the point already!" Then Dr. Wyatt did just that. She cut the crap! She finally came out and made an obvious statement. We don't get those too often on Grey's. It was refreshing. Makes me feel like I'm not crazy.

Meredith, on the other hand, might be. After Wyatt informed Grey that her insurance only covered 20 therapy sessions (thus prompting her candidness), she made clear what we all knew anyway: as long as Derek is with Rose, Meredith is not going to be happy (or sane for that matter). On an unrelated note, why does Meredith only get 20 sessions? You work at McDonald's, you get all the free Big Macs you want.

Back to Meredith and Derek. Beyond the fact that their clinical trial has turned into an annoying metaphor for their relationship, I'm tolerating it because we know what the outcome is going to be. For once, I feel like this is going somewhere. They've now killed five test patients in the name of science, but the second someone lives... naked time. Goodbye Rose, hello Meredith. That's what Derek wants anyway. He finally slept with Rose but could only think about Meredith. I will say that I was surprised that it took Sloan calling Rose a tease (or more specifically, terrified to "give it up") to prompt her to finally hop in the sack with Shepherd. It's really just a matter of time now before that bottle of celebratory champagne Derek bought gets popped open. The success of the clinical trial won't be all they're toasting to though.

The biggest development of the episode had to be the return of Burke... sort of. Weber posted a newspaper clipping that said Burke had won some prestigious heart surgeons award. Naturally, this sent Yang into a downward spiral. She ducked out of Hahn's service for the day, retired to the morgue to cut hearts from cadavers, and sang "Like a Virgin" over and over again. I couldn't quite decipher if her singing that particular song was somehow an homage to how Burke made her feel or if it was just meant to be ironic since she was "cutting for the very first time" into the dead bodies in the room.

Regardless, it really seemed like she had cracked. But Meredith was able to cheer her up. The one thing that surprised me? Yang is constantly bitching about how Hahn treats her. Burke's award had the power to unite them and Hahn even reached out to Yang. They could trash talk him together. She didn't bite though. I guess can understand why. It's like Yang said - she was the unseen hand to his brilliance. If not for her, Burke ain't in the paper. But was she mentioned in any of his research? Nope. Almost makes you wonder why she chooses to stay at Seattle Grace. Also, anyone else notice that Burke was referred to as an "area surgeon" in the article? Does that mean he works at another Seattle hospital? The one where Hahn used to work maybe? All I'm saying is that makes it awfully easy to bring him back for a guest stint should Washington ever heal any of his wounds with his ex-cast mates.

Moving on to the Chief. I was hoping Adele would be back at some point. Why couldn't she have just shown up at the hospital though? Making her the new union rep for SGH's nurses felt a little forced to me. She's not some unknown that needs a reason for an appearance. Anyway, I'm glad her and Richard seem to be back on track.

Sloan had some great lines in this episode, one of which I quoted at the beginning of the post. If anyone should have gotten a spin-off from Grey's, it should have been him. Anyway, ignoring the fact that he's sleeping with Callie again, it looks like he finally may have developed some self-respect. Credit Bailey's "he's a whore" speech to all of the striking nurses. Bailey made a good point: they all knew he got around, so why are they complaining?

Now speaking of Callie, she's been acting awfully awkward around Hahn ever since Addison made those lesbian remarks. Naturally, Hahn played right into it and she made all sorts of questionable remarks. Like the "it's because I don't have a penis" one. However, she actually grew into a better character in this episode if you ask me. When she came clean with Callie about having issues about making friends and how she was hurt that Callie didn't talk to her about Sloan, I actually felt bad for Hahn. She isn't exactly brimming with human emotion, so it was nice to see that side to her. That being said, she could still be gay. He reaction to Callie when she brought it up at Joe's was pretty ambiguous. So who knows. It would explain why Hahn was so disinterested in Sloan when he made a pass at her.

More thoughts and observations:

  • Hahn needs cadaver hearts for her research. I wonder what she's looking into? And is it that easy to just take all the hearts from bodies in the morgue? She told Yang there were about 50, right? Don't you need consent to take someone's heart? I mean, I assume next of kin did consent... but 50 seemed like a lot.
  • Maybe I'm mean, but I thought it was hilarious that Alex forgot about sleeping with Lexie. Speaks to her character in general. Forgettable.
  • And speaking of that other Grey girl, it seems pretty obvious that her and George are going to end up sleeping together. However, I wonder how George's new title ("George O'Malley: Intern to the Chief") will affect Lexie's standing with the other interns? If George is a brown-noser, what does that make her?
  • I remember reading somewhere that it was a big deal they were casting for two gay soldiers. Well this was it. The big deal was... ? What? The kiss? So what?
  • Again, call me mean, but I'm starting to get really annoyed with Bailey. She got mad at Weber because he assumed she couldn't possibly be having sex with someone else at the hospital. Well, yeah... I agree. Are we forgetting that her nickname is the Nazi? Plus, she's moody, condescending, and has her kid with her at all times now. I know she's going through a phase of self-doubt (especially since Tucker is already dating), but I don't think she's much of a catch.
  • Isn't disclosure of an office romance pretty standard HR procedure for most workplaces? Anyone else find it odd that SGH didn't already have this type of agreement in effect?
  • While it was great to see Alex bond with his patient's children, it just makes Ava/Rebecca's lie that much more real. She isn't having a kid and Izzie knows it. Patient confidentiality or not, I can't believe she didn't tell him the truth or even do something like leave her chart with the ultrasound results just lying around so that Karev might see it.

So what does everyone think? There's only one episode left before the two-hour finale and for the most part, I feel like we know what to expect. Derek and Meredith are going to get together, George and Lexie are probably going to get naked, and Alex is going to find out the truth about Ava/Rebecca. My point? I don't see much conflict. What's the big cliffhanger going to be? Any predictions? I just hope the finale doesn't hinge on the outcome of some bizarre case.

Who should Sloan sleep with next?
stick with Callie...214 (49.4%)
go back to pursuing Hahn...63 (14.5%)
he owes Bailey big time now...156 (36.0%)

I like Lexie. I'm sorry, but she's one of my favorite characters. Plus she's cute and she reminds me of the cute nurse I wish I could be with one day. I don't like all the hate she gets and hope she stays on the show until its series finale hopefully sometime in 2050 or so.

Also, I enjoyed this episode a lot. I agree it's been doing well since the strike ended. I look forward to every week.

How ironic that they would have an episode with a gay couple, kissing passionately no less, and a picture of Isaiah Washington as Burke.

this is for Jasmine; let's see, Isaiah Washington physically attacked Patrick Dempsey on-set and threw around gay slurs on the set and on camera, into a microphone after the Golden Globes. How ridiculous that anyone is empathetic still to a bigoted bully. If a white actor had attacked a black actor and/or used the 'n' word on-set and in public, I wonder if his firing would be justified?

I though, in all honesty, this episode was more deserving of accolades than you gave it. For me, it was the best of the season so far. The Addison episode comes close, but this one pulled it out of the bag for me. I loved how they explored the three 'cold bitches' emotions - that being Hahn (though briefly), Cristina, and Bailey (they seem to be exploring her's more, and I like it.) As for your remarks about Bailey not being a catch, I disagree! Of course she's disagreeable right now, she's a single mother and her husband is dating other people now. I sympathize with her. As for the gay soldier sub-plot, I thought it fit really well into the Mer/Der storyline. It was sad and heartwrenching (...I might've even teared for a moment, but just a moment!), and I think it was one of the big kicks that Meredith has been getting lately telling her to go back to Derek. Plus the psychiatrist? Classic.

No offense, but a better review of this episode would be nice. I liked Laura's comments better. This episode and last weeks episode was certainly Grey's trying to get back on track. Everyone from avid fans to casual watchers has felt ever since mid-season last year that this show has lacked luster. It needs to go beyond just sex. Like new lovers its time for the world of grey's to grow up a little and I think that is what they are trying to do.
Lexie is growing as a character, but I'd seriously don't want George sleeping with another girl. The only one left is Yang. Talk about pathetic man-whore. (Whore because he does it for attention). Greg has a real chance to be a better character let's hope he gets there. Izzie is starting to grow up. I think the writer's realized they better make her a stronger character or she'll walk away into the land of movies forever. It is time for Derek and Merideth to get together and be a strong couple. It can be done, people you don't need constant sexual tension to keep a show running, besides there are enough people lusting and screwing each other to let these two rise above the standard. Writers, don't let us down.

Thanks for the recap! I have not watched GREYS since Washington was unjustly fired. I was tempted to watch after seeing his photo in the previews, but couldn't do it. Thanks to the recap, I can see I didn't miss anything.

Jasmine - How could you possibly be empathetic about a homophobic prick being JUSTLY fired from his job. The only thing that sucks about Washington being fired from Grey's is that he was able to find work elsewhere. He should be completely banished from the business. Unlike you, I refuse to watch any show that he ever appears on again.

Gay soldiers: Both my wife and I thought it would have been much more interesting if they had kept the tension (are they or aren't they?), throughout the episode. How realistic is it to be "Don't ask, don't tell" through a tour of duty, and then, with Meridith in the room, Dad and an Army doc just outside, to start making out?! It was stupid.

Izzie/Ava: Doesn't this hospital have an ethics guy that Izzie could talk to? I'm pretty sure we saw one when she killed Denny. This plot line also seems stupid. Alex's character had become very contemptuous in regards to Ava. Why wouldn't he ask for proof?

I actually liked this episode. And since I hated/disliked most of the episodes this season, this post-strike show has really been pretty good. Maybe Addison coming back was just the catalyst they all needed to bring the show slowly back to its good days.

Want to know the difference between a bitch and a slut? A slut will sleep with anybody but a bitch will sleep with anybody BUT you.

I thought the kiss between the two gay soliders was hot. I haven't seen a full on kiss like that on tv. I wanted more!

I wish people- especially the writers in this case- would GET the difference between a whore and slut difference. Whores have sex for money (or to get something). Sluts are just promiscuous.

Mark Sloan is a slut- unless he's been charging for his services.

Technically true distinction, but men rarely get called sluts. It just never seems like the right word.

I know everyone hates Lexie, but she made the scene in the morgue when Christina started to sing. Her face of shock and confusion was classic, and I laughed for a minute when she went along with it.
