Electric Company is coming back to PBS Kids

Morgan Freeman as Easy Reader on The Electric CompanyThis must be my week for nostalgia. First, I learned all about what the cast of Saved by the Bell has been up to for the last 20 years. Now, the news that The Electric Company is coming back to TV has pushed my nostalgia button once again.

As a kid, I was such a fan of The Electric Company that when my husband and three year old started singing the Spider-Man theme song, I thought they were wrong. I didn't understand where the lyrics, "Where are you coming from, Spider-Man? Nobody knows who you are," were in their version of the theme. I was set straight! I guess I can accept that Spider-Man theme situation, but to me, Morgan Freeman will always be Easy Reader.

As a mom of a Superhero-loving kid, I am game to any show that is geared to make reading seem cool, and that's speaking as a former reading teacher, too.

I am looking forward to seeing the new incarnation of one of my favorite kid shows, thirty years later. It's in production now and will be airing in January on PBS Kids. What is your fondest memory of The Electric Company?

Faster than a rolling O
Stronger than silent E
Able to leap capital T with a single bound

It's a word, it's a plan it's LETTERMAN!

Oops I meant adverbs! Please don't kick me out of the English teachers' club!
Oh man I probably misspelled broccolli too...

I'm disappointed the 2 dvd collections didn't include the few things I still want to see:
The cartoon about adding -ly to make adjectives, which scared me because Dracula was in it
The Broccolli song! Where is it?

I hate when people compare EC to Sesame Street because I hated SS (I was a weird kid) and loved loved LOVED EC. I was able to read before age 3 and I swear it's because of this show. Let's hope the new version uses the same techniques (honestly, I don't understand why it's supposed to be bad to show vintage EC and SS to today's kids).

I always loved the Tom Lehrer songs, especially "Silent E." However, I recently frightened my parents and brother during a retrospective they aired on PBS. They showed a clip starting with a woman singing "T-I-O-N"...and I immediately chimed in "tion, tion, tion, tion." I have no idea how that stuck in my brain for 24 years, but I didn't even have to think about the lyrics.

I hope the new version is as good as the classic.

"New" version?

Meh, I got all excited because I thought the old version was going to be re-run on tv...

wow. i am 45yrs old and i remember like it was yesterday. this was Sesame Street's cool cousin. multicultural was all over this show before it was cool. morgan freeman, rita moreno, the black nurse lady on that Ted Danson show, and the bald spanish guy were on this show.

easy reader was a favorite, but my all-time favorite was "letterman".

good memories.
