Winner of Top Model talks about being first plus-size model to win the show
TV Guide caught up with America's Next Top Model winner Whitney Thompson. The 20-year-old from Florida dished about being the first plus-size model to win the show, the judges, the clever editing, and being full-figured in the modeling industry.Of course Thompson said exactly what you'd expect about the judges and the editing. She only saw the judges for ten minutes a week, so they really didn't get to know the real Whitney. And of course, like everyone else on reality TV, she was the victim of good editing. However, Thompson maintains that she was friends with most of the girls in the house and had good connections with the other contestants.
I like what she said about being a plus-size model. "One thing that separates me from other plus-size models who have been in earlier cycles is that I'm saying, "I'm not emaciated, I'm not starving myself and yet I'm considered plus-size. Why is that? Why is a healthy size considered too big?," she argued. I agree. I don't think any plus-size models deserve the adjective "plus-size." Most of them seem normal-looking to me. And I'm happy to see that a plus-size models are getting more ad campaigns and that one won America's Next Top Model. I think it's about time.
Thompson left off by saying how she'll make her way in the modeling industry, "I'm really, really dependent on my fan base. I'm not sure they realize that, but if these people support me or even another full-figured girl, then that's good. They won't buy from [designers] who continue to use emaciated models who are starving to death. That's where it counts [in the wallet]."
