Watch the music of Battlestar Galactica performed live - VIDEOS

by Brad Trechak, posted May 20th 2008 8:21PM
G4TVThis is pretty cool. Apparently, Bear McCreary, the composer for Battlestar Galactica, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and many other films and television series, performed a concert of some of his music at The Roxy. Two segments from the concert were placed on his blog. The concerts were televised on G4. Wasn't that channel supposed to be about video games?

Bear McCreary himself has an interesting blog in which he discusses the business of making music for the video entertainment industry. The music has always been a major part of the dark undertones of Battlestar Galactica; it serves the story very well and is a vital part of the telling.

There are two videos after the jump of the Roxy concert. They include pieces called "Roslin and Adama" and "Fight Night". Admittedly, I can't place the Galactica episodes in which they were played. If anyone can, please let me know in the comments.

Of every hour of music I listen to, about 45 minutes is devoted to the scores from the three first seasons of BSG.

Precipice and Storming Caprica, Scar, Battle of the Asteroid, Black Market, Mandala in the Clouds, Wayward Soldier... best music for the gym or to just imagine yourself streaking by a basestar and dropping your Viper's nose sideways to strafe the raiders' egress ports.

I love the show's soundtrack, but I can't remember hearing "Fight Night" at all...is it that boxing episode? I hardly remember that episode at all.

G4 stopped being about video games a long time ago, when it decided to try and be a slightly nerdier version of Spike TV.

Does anyone know if they will re-run the concert on G4? If so when? Thanks.

"Roslin and Adama" is generally featured as a theme whenever you see the two together. "Fight Night" was featured in the episode of the same name.

The two videos are just a portion of the bigger concert, where many songs from the soundtrack were performed, along with their version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower."

In his blog, Bear explains all the different themes he's created that make up a rich musical culture established for the show. His score is what I consider to rival most modern soundtracks, and is definitely in my top 5 TV/movie soundtracks. Glad to see Bear is getting some love on a TV blog!

Do you mean "Unfinished Business" ?

It is wonderful to see someone at the top of their craft.

Gah, you're right. Long day, thanks for the correction. Yeah, Bear should definitely have some nice projects lined up after BSG ends... loving his stuff with Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles so far!

I wish he had done the opening song. I mean, there's plenty of all-female Latin-singing choirs around, right?
