CBS wins May sweeps

CBSIf you look at the Nielsen ratings each week, where you see shows like Survivor, NCIS, all of the CSIs, Two and a Half Men, 60 Minutes, Without A Trace, and Criminal Minds consistently in the top 20, this probably won't come as a surprise: CBS has won this year's May sweeps period.

This is the sixth year in a row that the network has won the period. It also helped that CBS had some big specials this year, including the Academy of Country Music Awards. And here's an interesting little factoid: CBS has the number one scripted show on five different nights: CSI: Miami on Mondays, NCIS on Tuesdays, Criminal Minds on Wednesdays, CSI on Thursdays, and Numb3rs on Fridays. The number one scripted show on Sundays is Desperate Housewives. As for Saturday, who the hell knows what's going on that night.

The Eye has also been doing well since the writers strike ended and new programming started. Since March, CBS has been number one in viewers and number two in the 18 to 49 demographic. It seems that American Idol and Dancing with the Stars get the number one and two slots and all of the buzz when they are on, but overall, over the entire season, CBS does really well.

i happen to be a fan of cbs, and the shows they air. Whilst I am also a fan of some abc shows, it is not surprising that cbs won. Truth be told, most network television isn't that great. The fact that CBS won, on the laurels of shows that are at least halfway decent, and some which are good, is no reason to go crazy and express hatred for the eye. The production value of most of the shows on television, at least in america, is not nearly as high. You also have to look at what is being offered as alternative. On friday, nothing is. On tuesdays, nothing really is. On thursday, nothing much is. Same goes for Monday and Wednesday.

i for one, will stick to mythbusters, ultimate fighter, american chopper, and other such shows, but the bulk of tv viewers are looking for cbs-ish shows, and thats exactly why cbs has done so well this past decade.

Another thing to note is that CBS generally can afford to be more risque' lately, and has been, as they know people will tune in to their more pedestrian shows.

This is really sad. I don't want to hear one more time from anybody that NBC is a crapfest, because CBS is the true and perennial crapfest. Unfortunately, most American's haven't been able to figure that out.

Well, I'm sure Fox will look at different numbers, saying that Fox was the most-watched network overall this past season averaging 11.1 million viewers, beating traditional leader CBS with only 10.5 million.

Sure, it's because of the strike vs Idol, but last season The Eye wasn't the most watched network, and I'm sure Fox will love it...

Too bad Moonlight wasn't considered part of that success. It would really be nice to see a second season of it, even at the expense of one of the CSIs and I admit I watch all 3 versions.

I agree. In fact, in the year end ratings, Moonlight finished higher than some of the more highly touted series. I know that some of you out there consider us to be radical rabblerousing freaks but with some of the offerings given to us by aALL of the television icons out there, Moonlight is a well-acted, well-written, alternative to nobrainers like Cavemen, Viva Las Vegas, and .... well, should I go on? Why this series was cancelled without benefit of a chance to recover from the writer's strike or a chance of a full second season is beyond my comprehension.
