The Nuttiest Fans Award: Call for considerations

by Annie Wu, posted May 21st 2008 3:08PM
TV Squad AwardsJust spending five minutes in a random pop culture convention is enough to make anyone realize that fans can be scary. Very, very scary. Of course, being a fan can mean more than just dressing up as a show's most scantily-clad character and wandering around a convention center. It really depends on how you define fan-dedication.

Is it all about making an actual impact when one's favorite show is in trouble? Then take into consideration the determined fans of Jericho, who made their voices heard through a bizarre peanut plan and managed save their beloved program (albeit briefly). Or perhaps being a fan is all about spreading the word. The Colbert Report's dangerously devoted Colbert Nation has spread Stephen Colbert's name and persona throughout the world, from minor league hockey teams to Hungarian bridges to the Time 100. There are also the hard-working fans of shows like Lost, who spend incredible amounts of time breaking down each and every possible clue and theory. I dare say they work so much, they often get ahead of the writers. And then there are those fans that patrol the Internet for any negative remarks about their favorite shows and then pounce when they sense fan-injustice. Just last month, our own Jonathan Toomey risked facing the wrath of Battlestar Galactica fans to express his opinion, and he is braver than I for doing so.

Also, keep in mind how the strike-induced TV drought gave fans the opportunity to show their support and demonstrate their dedication to their favorite shows and creative minds. Think about some stand-out moments in which fans rallied together to make that depressing time a little bit more bearable.

So, who do you think were the most dedicated fans of the '07 - '08 season? Comment with your nominations and we'll make a super-list of the season's super-fans.

I wouldn't know if it's nuttier than the others mentioned, but the Nation is definitely hands down the most fanatic, most dedicated group of fans I've ever been a member of.

Also, since we're listing achievements, I think the '1000000 strong for Colbert' facebook group deserves a mention.

while moonlight fans are pretty creative (i include myself among moonlight fans, but not a creative one) w/ their fan effort, i would have to give this one to jericho fans (of which i'm one too). even though it still wound up being canceled in the end, those guys did a great job and the idea of nuts as a callback to jake's line was awesome.

definitely jericho!

I don't know about colbertnation, but Stephen Colbert is one of the best new comedians and an actor and the report is great.

My vote goes to the Back To Youniverse. This show has a ton of potential, and they are doing whatever it takes to get it back on the air.

Jericho fans hands down. We have given to charity over $20,000 to Greensburg Kansas alone, sent dvds to troops, sent peanuts to CBS with our vendor making sure they went to the troops and foodbanks, bought ads in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter two years in a rown. funded a billboard in LA that will be up any day now and are raising funds for commericals and collecting peanut butter for a food bank in Kansas along with sending more dvds to the troops. Our show is about surviving with humanity and we are doing just that.

Jericho fans, by far, are the best. The Nuts to Nielsen campaign was a campaign to open the eyes of networks and Nielsen to how different television viewing is today. We no longer have to sit down at a certain time to watch our favorite shows. We now have the ability to watch our shows when we have the time and on whatever venue we want to use. Definitely makes for more convenient television viewing.

By the way, Jericho fans have done way more than just send nuts to Nielsen. We have orchestrated a massive letter writing campaign, we've sent food to various food pantries, we've sent DVDs to troops to show our support, and much, much more. Not to mention that the nuts we sent will be distributed to people who can use them.

Jericho fans were pioneers of show-saving campaigns. You can't deny that we were successful in our efforts. It was the fault of CBS, who put Jericho in a bad timeslot, did very little advertising, and only gave us 7 episodes in season 2, that sealed the fate of Jericho. Jericho deserves to continue. And it deserves to continue on a network that realizes what an amazing and beloved show it is.

I'm going to sound like a broken record - but based on the boards and my experiences at Comic Con, this award should definitely go to Moonlight fans. They give blood, they are *obsessed* with Alex O'Loughlin and Jason Dohring and they raised more than $14,000 in less than 72 hours for their fan campaign. There's more - but that's just off the top of my head. Beware the wrath of ML fans should you speak ill of their show.

I'll pledge my vote for the "Back to You" fans, only because I am one of them. We've been working nonstop for the past 2 weeks trying to sway all the networks to renew this show for a second season. We've started an online petition, sent bottled water, empty water bottles, bottle labels, and money, wrote letters, sent emails, created printable postcards to send to the networks, and much more. Fans even created a memorial for Back to You just hours after it was cancelled by FOX. If that isn't dedicated, I don't know what its!

While I applaud your dedication, see me after you have been doing it for a year like Jericho fans have been . . . and we're not done yet! We had over 100,000 signatures on our first petition within 2 weeks; the purchase of 20 tons of peanuts generated a $20,000 donation to Greenburg, KS; we sent tens of thousands of email; we clogged up CBS' executives voice mail on their personal cell phones; we sent thousands of snail mail letters; faxes and phone calls. - All during the first campaign. We have been sending thousands of hand-written snail mail (as requested) to CBS/Paramount and various cable networks since the end of Season 2. We have heard directly from the producers and writers of Jericho that negotiations are continuing.
