Criminal Minds: Lo-Fi (season finale)

Criminal Minds
(S03E19) Talk about ending a season in an explosive way!

In the past three years, this week's episode was probably the second episode of Criminal Minds that I watched in its entirety. It's not a bad show but I just can't watch everything that airs on TV. However, since I stop watching any American Idol season after Hollywood Week, so I wasn't going to watch the finale, and because my usual Wednesdays at 9 PM shows were done for the season, I tuned in to CBS and watched the BAU at work.

The team was sent to NYC to determine if random shootings of victims who had nothing in common were the work of one or more shooters. I, who is not a regular viewer of the show, enjoyed the case of the week because it had a good number of twists and turns (finding out there were more than one shooter, one of them waiting for the detectives to arrive and shooting one of them, etc.).

But the case of the week was thrown out the window in the episode's last 30 seconds or so. We saw each character enter a different car and then BOOM!, one of them blew up. It may not be an original ending, since a lot of series had bombs go off in their season finales, but it is a major game changer nonetheless.

Per the hits we got here at TV Squad on our Criminal Minds category minutes after the episode ended, and after reading some of the comments at official CM forums, it seems that the ending surprised a lot of fans. Comments on the forums range from "They can't do that to the team!!!" to "I hope they kill off Joe Mantegna's character because he's no Gideon!" Fans are not happy campers right now and most of them, according to what I've read on the web, hope that the explosion occurred in a car where none of the team was.

Hours before the season finale aired, TV Guide posted an article about it in which executive producer Ed Bernero reveals that "one of our team is going to be severely injured and viewers will have to wait all summer to find out who it was." Look at his choice of words: severely injured. Could it be that no one will die but that someone will spend weeks, if not months, in the hospital?

Dead or severely injured, depending on who was hit, the show could have totally different dynamics when it returns for a fourth season this fall. What did you think of the finale? Who do you think was hit by the explosion? Do you think the explosion is linked to the case of the week?

Who was "severely injured" by the explosion?

This is one of the best criminal shows on television. I enjoy the way they interact with their profiling. I am impressed with each character and am glad you are bringing J.J. back in season 7. I love Garcia and Dr. Reed. Looking forward to many more expisodes. Loved your finally on expisode 3.

This show is just a compilation of rehashed stories from many different crime novels. I despise the character of Hotch, the dour face of constipation, as well as the black t-shirt clad Angelina Jolie wannabes. Could have been a good show with the material they stole from real writers but the characters are so lame and unsympathetic. Too bad.

i actually replayed the last few minutes of the season finale more than 5 times and i paused it on the bomb explosion..
there was a "no right turn" sign on the side street and there was a pole similar to the one next to Reed's car and Garcia. The thing that got my attention was the traffic light. the SUV was facing the traffic light and the one closest to that description was Morgan's car when he entered on the drive side you will see a traffic light as well..but who knows.. this is just based on what i saw..

I just got to watch..and so far only replayed end twice but the exsplosion shot there is a no right turn on right passenger side and a few charaters had like light poles there. I cae here hoping someone knew who didn't sign a contract for next season. But sounds like and looks like JJ boy is dead and she is injured.

I like him better on Dirt anyway.

Derek is almost too obvious, he was starting have emotional cracks.

They do need a new insightful Gideon, how about the asian psycholigist from "Law & Order SVU?"

It's Prentiss! Think about it. The BAU team thinks it's a terror group. The terror group knows the BAU is looking for them. The terror group was monitoring response time. According to the BAU, the terror group wants to set off one bomb, wait for the first responders to arrive and then set off another bomb. Prentiss went to the hospital to check on the NYC detective that was shot. What happens when a cop is shot? A bunch of his buds hang around for support. So, the bomb goes off at the hospital, injuring/killing many cops and a fed. Even more cops and the rest of the BAU will rush to the hospital and BOOM!!! bomb number 2 goes off. But Hotchner's smarter than that. He'll somehow keep everyone away from the hospital and keep the team on track of finding this terror group. Happy summer!

Hotch was the only one not shown getting into a car - I'm liking the idea that it was the head of the field office and Hotch was just nearby. Can they really have someone survive that kind of explosion -so if it is 'just' an injury -then it has to be Hotch.
Then Morgan will stay to head up BAU -but it will be a conflict because he is first in line to replace the Field Office gal.
