Grey's Anatomy: Freedom (season finale)

Grey's Finale Season 4"The pager is sacred. Sacred sparkle." -- Izzie

A sparkly pager, some quick-drying cement, and a field of candles all play into tonight's 2-hour episode -- the Season Four finale of Grey's Anatomy. Has it really been only four seasons? Because it seems like so much more.

Anyway, tonight we learn a little more about some of the interns' history. For one thing, via a therapy session (and why can't I have Amy Madigan as my therapist?), we learn that young Meredith saw her mom slit her wrists, then had to wait for her to pass out before calling 911.

Meredith says her mom wanted to die, but by the end of the episode, she figures out that she really didn't want to die. Being a brilliant surgeon, her mom would have known the faster road to death entailed slitting her carotid artery.

Meredith decides she's not mad at her mom, but rather at the Chief, because his leaving was the cause of her mom's troubles (somehow, I think she had a few other issues). Anyway, Meredith and the Chief make peace by the end of the ep, and Meredith decides to take her mom's advice and "be extraordinary." Whatever.

A depressed Cristina perks up when Meredith tosses her the Sparkly Pager -- you know, the one with the fast-track to all the good surgeries. Her first Sparkly Pager task: save the life of a guy who arrived at the hospital encased in cement. Apparently, some moron kids dared him to lie down in fresh quick-drying cement. He did it to impress one of the morons -- a girl.

After much discussion, the docs decide to chip the cement off him (Really? Wow, I wish I'd thought of that!). But the cement does some wonky things to his body, so he ends up in surgery with Cristina and a half-dozen other docs saving his life. Cement Boy survives.

Rebecca's a mess, practically a vegetable as Alex feeds her, changes her (yes, you know what I mean), and everything else. Then she slits her wrist with a kitchen knife (Alex! How dumb can you be, leaving the room with a knife on the counter?!).

At the hospital, Izzie wants Rebecca evaluated by a psych doc, but Alex lashes out, calling Izzie a "stupid bitch!" That's harsh. Apparently, he has some experience with his own crazy mom. In the end, Izzie's right and Alex knows it. So he has Rebecca admitted to a psych facility, then goes home and has sex with Izzie. All better.

Callie decides she really is gay, and plants a wet one on Erica. Not right away, of course. First Callie has to make like she wants Sloan, but his gaydar is working at full capacity, and he ends up pushing her into Erica's arms.

Derek and Meredith are doing clinical trials on tumors, but their record sucks. I'm pretty sure the Chief told Meredith that nine of her clinical trial patients have died, and if she doesn't get the next one right, the board will shut her down. Thank God she and Derek end up with not one, but TWO trial patients -- a boy and girl who fell in love while doing chemo together at Mayo.

But before the kids go into surgery, they want to get down and dirty at least once. So Derek and Meredith put them in a room together, then guard the door while they go at it inside. Somehow, I'm sure the neurosurgeon at a big hospital would have more important things to do than guard a door for kids he's pimped out to each other. Then again, maybe not. And it's a good thing they had that time together, because the boy doesn't make it.

Lexie gets hold of the interns' files (I guess they jumped out of the Chief's file cabinet into her hands) and memorizes them with her super-photographic mind. She tells George he only failed the intern test by one measly point. He'd rather not know this, because it just confirms that he's "the almost guy."

But he comes around, talks to the Chief, and gets a second chance at the test. Oh, and Lexie knows that Alex lied about having cancer and losing a testicle. Because she's seen his testicles, and there's two there. That intel could come in handy at some point.

Bailey decides she can't be super-woman after all and hands the clinic keys over to Izzie. Makes sense to me, since Izzie built the clinic with money Denny left her. Plus, she's got the kind-hearted, people-person thing going. "You make me proud," Bailey tells her. Sheesh, are the writers on strike again?

The Chief ends up going home to his wife -- just because he's decided that's the thing to do. "It's about time!" says his wife, kissing him at the door. What, do these people never talk about this stuff?

Having no Meredith in his future, Derek decides to sell his prime real estate. (You know, the land that's had an Airstream sitting on it for years. What, he can't build a house unless he has a wife to put in it? That's so 1950.) Anyway, his plans to sell it are stopped in their tracks when he heads home and finds Meredith there, in the middle of a giant blueprint made out of candles next to the trailer. (I'd like to know where she got all those candles in the 60 minutes it must have taken him to get there.)

Could there be some happiness in the future for this dysfunctional couple? Time will tell. Derek does the honorable thing and leaves Meredith amidst the candles while he goes to find Rose -- right then and there! -- and tell her he won't be trailering up with her anymore. I guess we'll find out how that meeting went when next season rolls around.

After reading this reviewcap, I plan to:
storm Jane's house with torches tonight96 (38.9%)
stop at the end of her street, since she's just filling in for Jonathan52 (21.1%)
keep the torches in the garage for now99 (40.1%)

They could cancel this show now, never make another episode, and I would be satisfied. Not because I don't like the show, but because they left no interesting loose ends. Derek and Meredith are together, The cheif and his wife, Dr. Bailey and her family, Cristina growing a pair, and George finally realizing he always was who he thought he was.

I really liked this program. And to be fair I watched it through to the end. I will not be a fan anymore because of the Gay format. Sorry but I feel it should remain behind closed doors. I feel you are pushing it onto the viewers. Do writers not know how to show something may be going on without showing us it?

Are they changing the name to Gay's Anatomy??? I mean "Seriously!"
The review was fine. Episode sucked. Could have been the Series Finale the way it was scripted, everything was tied together in the end. Maybe that was for the fans who won't be watching next season (like me) if they continue on this writing path. I am sick of Mer/Der. Meredith cured in just a couple of therapy sessions. Never talked about her abandonment issues with her father. I, too, want Amy Madigan for my therapist if she can figure it all out that quickly! Then why are so many people with lesser issues in therapy for years and years??? ...and does everyone remember that Alex was there for Izzie when Denny died, then she couldn't be there for him? C'mon...she's already slept with him!
I am not into the kissing of two women or two men. I do not enjoy this seeing this. I am sure Grey's fans are mostly heterosexual so why bombard us with this? The idea would be enough and acceptable without me having to look away and feel nauseous over it. Get over it Shonda. I think her success has surely gone to her head where she thinks she has no boundaries. Well, good for her. I am sure next season will all but fail. The fan-base is already dwindling after the strike so throw some crap at the fans that are still here and let's see how many more we can lose. Oh wait!!! Grey's will pick up more homosexual fans. I will stick to ER, maybe start watching CSI or maybe watch my soaps on tivo or just pick up a book. I am sure I can find something better than Gay's, er, I mean Grey's...after all, I survived the strike!

I would just like to say that i applaud you Jane . Like you I was a star of Grey,s anatomy from 2005 and I thought the show rocked. But this season has been a complete travesty. And if there are any more 'bed-hopping musical chair antics' I am going to puke. What is wrong with you people are your sex lives so deficient that you have to get it vicariously through Grey's. That callie/hahn relationship is stupid and unnecessary and an insult to gay people everywhere and a cheap cop out. And i have never seen anyone as unlikable as Meredith and I don't care abbout their relationship. They are getting predictable and hurting other characters with their crappy behaviour. I do not think it is fair to use Rose and throw her away. That is crappy behaviour even for our 'Mcdreamy!' GOD!

I usually enjoy the tv squad reviews, but this was crap. No real review at all, and jeez, what do you expect? An Oscar worthy plot that will save you from here to eternity? No, this was Grey's at its best, it was character driven and a good finale. Have to say tv squad lost some creed with this.

Thanks for all the comments, folks. Keep 'em coming! And don't forget to vote. So far, we've got 88 responses:

39 - planning to storm my house with torches
15 - stopping at the end of my street, since I'm just filling in for Jonathan (and this is the first reviewcap I've written for TV Squad).
34 - keeping the torches in the garage for now.

Grey's Anatomy has actually been one of my favorite shows since it first came on the scene in 2005. During seasons 1 and 2, I was rabid for each new episode and couldn't wait to see what happened with everyone.

Then, like a lot of people, I kind of lost interest during season 3, to the point where I'd record it and then wouldn't even bother to watch. It had that Desperate Housewives syndrome going, where the luster was gone.

This season -- season 4 - of Grey's was also lukewarm for me. I was sick of all the self-absorption among the interns, sick of Derek and Meredith's on-off relationship, sick of everyone on the show talking the same -- as in, the same type of dialogue and monologuing at the drop of a hat. People just don't do that in real life. And really, I was sick of the heaviness each week and constant shark-jumping with bombs in the O.R., people impaled together with 2 by 4s, and, in this last episode, Cement Boy.

Though much of this last episode was a head-scratcher (how DID Meredith get all those candles set up in such a short time? And didn't she or Derek think to use their cell phones and call each other?), I was glad to see things move FORWARD with them. The idea that they MAY have a future together gives me something to look forward to.

I wish the Grey's writers would see that couples in family situations can have storylines that are just as interesting as on-again-off-again couples. Maybe moreso, because that's really where the rubber meets the road, so to speak. Hey, if you can survive the life and loss situations that come your way as you have a family, get older, take care of aging parents, and lose precious loved ones, then that's truly a story we can all grab hold of and relate to.

Like some of you, I wonder if something will happen to Derek on his way to or from talking to Rose. If he gets in a hideous car crash and loses his memory just as Meredith is finally realizing that maybe he truly IS the one, then that may be enough for me to take Grey's Anatomy off season pass on the DVR.

As a paid blogger, the least you could have done was your job: review the show. Whether you loved or hated the finale, you merely gave us a flat, biased summary, and not a review.

You need to understand who your audience is before you hand in garbage like this. We (most of us) are coming to this post because we are fans of the show and want to gain insight, and share ideas, not read about what happened because forgot to set our DVR's.

The icing on the cake is that you did this to not just an episode, but the FINALE!

Gah.
