Harper's Island: it's the new Moonlight - VIDEO

by Brett Love, posted May 23rd 2008 11:54AM

Elaine Cassidy - Harper's IslandOK, before you Moonlight fans come after me, I'm kidding with the post title ... mostly. The similarities are rather striking though. Remember when team Moonlight brought in former Angel producer David Greenwalt, and most of the original cast was sent packing? Well, now comes word that former Angel producer Jeffrey Bell has been brought in as the new showrunner for Harper's Island, and Elaine Cassidy is the only actor being held over from the pilot. Eeerie, isn't it?

I'm still not exactly bullish on the idea that serialized horror/drama is something that CBS can pull off, but you never know. That's what makes TV so fun. And I'm enough of a fan of things in the horror genre that I'll certainly be game to give this one a look. Bell, who also counts X-Files, Alias, and Day Break among his credits, will be sharing executive producer duties with Jericho's John Turteltaub. Here's hoping things go better for Mr. Bell than they did for Mr. Greenwalt. If you haven't seen the preview for Harper's Island yet, it's embedded, after the jump.

Forget 1 season, I think they'll give it the Smith treatment, 4 eps tops.

I saw (and reviewed) a 15 minute feature on this show on the MGM Studio Walk in Vegas last month. It actually looks pretty killer, folks. Shades of Twin Peaks with plenty of action. Too bad they scrapped the cast though. Bill Pullman's performance as the shifty uncle looked Emmy-worthy.

Wait people, what are you talking about? Don't you know that the network that it is popular to speak shit about is NBC. They're the crappiest network! They're the network it is acceptable to examine in detail every mistake they make and every time they stumble. CBS is the network with all those quality, quality shows (that I can count on two fingers, if I'm being generous, and don't count failed/not aired shows).

Get with the program, guys!!!

I won't throw any tomatoes at you for the reference of Moonlight. I do think its interesting that they think a show in the horror genre is any better than a proven show in the vampire genre with a proven fanbase. If the meddle with this show like they tried with Moonlight you'll see showrunners dropping like flies.

I won't give it a try, I'm done with CBS. Why watch a show and have it pulled out from under you. Moonlight has such great potential, I cared about the characters, couldn't wait until next week to see what was going to happen next. I can't see that happening with this series.

The youtube video was deleted so I couldnt see it. So tell me if I'm wrong, the woman goes around screaming alot waiting for a big strong man to save her? Sigh, give me Mick and Beth.

Vampire Solidarity Rah Rah Rah.

I now officially hate CBS. They're scrapping a pre-existing sci-fi/supernatural show with a pre-existing fan base, for another one which will possibly undergo the same process. I refuse to watch this on the off-chance it becomes good, I become addicted and then, they cancel it.

Actually they're not; it's worse. They're dropping "Moonlight" for the hour long romantic-comedy (well at least I'm calling it a romcom because I don't see it as a dramedy) "The Ex-List." "Harper's Island", which I think looks good, is a "midseason series" - in other words a replacement for a show that dies. Of course I have every hope that what "Harper's Island" will be replacing (rapidly) will be "The Ex-List."
