The Daily Show: May 29, 2008 - VIDEOS

by Annie Wu, posted May 30th 2008 12:23PM
John and JasonJohn McCain wasn't the only one to have his medical history thrown into the spotlight. Barack Obama's doctor analyzed his health and released a one-page report on how muscular and lean he is. No, it's not nearly as long-winded nor as sexy as McCain's crazy 1,200 page report.

Still-President Bush (I think I will start referring to him as such, as well) paid a visit to the US Air Force Academy's graduation and had a little fun with some soldiers on this celebratory day. I'm surprised there weren't any MySpace poses in this collection of poses from the day. This would be so much more endearing if there wasn't always that underlying tone of evil in everything he does. I'm just sayin'.

"C*A*S*H": The updated GI Bill will give soldiers greater flexibility in choosing which public university they wish to attend, as the amount provided for tuition has changed. Shame that some of the people most gung-ho about encouraging the nation to support the troops aren't so keen on this bill. Seriously, why are Jon Stewart and company doing more research than the people who will actually have an effect on the bill? I pray that it's just spin and not actually ignorance. I shouldn't have to point out how sad it is that I'm praying for spin.

Senior Correspondent Rob Riggle is on paternity leave? For reals, for reals? I can't find anything about it online. If it's true... It seems like every time a Daily Show correspondents has a baby, it happens right around the same time another correspondent is about to have one too. I think Sam Bee and Jason Jones' baby girl arrived around the same time as Rob Corrddry's kid? I bet the correspondents plan their baby-making schedules on a shared Google calendar. That's the only logical explanation.

"Sex and the City": Samantha Bee (and her super-huge pregnant belly) reported on the craziness of the Sex and the City movie. She seemed rather oblivious to the phenomenon, as her hubby Jason Jones is the real SatC lover. Cue the extra-adorable clip of him, John Oliver, Aasif Mandvi and Larry Wilmore ("Haha! I'm so promiscuous and sad...") stirring their martinis with cigars and gossiping.

The night's guest was Richard Clarke, author of Your Government Failed You: Breaking the Cycle of National Security Disasters. Setting up Monday's interview with Scott McClellan to be even more awkward, Jon Stewart asked about the then-Press Secretary's negative response to Clarke's first tell-all and the irony that McClellan's releasing his own disgruntled employee book. I'm trying not to think about McClellan's interview next week and focusing more on the fact that David Sedaris will appear on Tuesday. David! Sedaris! Yay! I don't think I've actually seen him on TV before. To me, he is just a Capote-like voice on my "This American Life" subscription.

Jon/Stephen: Heh, I guess the writers were a wee bit tired. Moment of Zen: The Bush family and SatC. That old combo.

I have one thing to say about this episode,
It's the attack of the "POP-UP" Politicians!

Wow, a whole episode with no Ventures.
It was a good origin story but there is still no explanation for the Monarch's hatred of Dr. Venture.
And Murderous Moppets!!

Honestly reading your reviews is just as fun as actually watching the show. I had the show sitting here waiting for me to press play but I waited for your review to appear, watched the show and then gleefully read what you had to say. It's like watching the Daily Show with a commentary track. I love this. Please keep doing this forever. Honestly please tell keep telling us what other stuff you are watching/reading for all the stuff you mentioned in the past as a side note always turned out to be friggin awesome.

Hmmkay I think this has gotten weird enough. See you next tuesday ^^;

I dont have cable (gasp?) so I have to wait a day until the videos are all posted on the site (and I get off work), but I think I can still offer some thoughts.

I have indeed been also pondering Scott McClellan's book + appearance on TDS. The first second I heard that he had a book critical of the administration, I instantly thought "I wonder if he'll be on The Daily Show?". (how'd I manage to use the phrase 'first second' in a sentence?)

I very much enjoy Richard Clarke. He strikes me as a truth-teller, like Paul O'Neil. Thinking of Scott McClellan certainly didnt conjure similar adjectives, but somehow it feels vaguely like he's making a petition for the truth (whatever that may be).

I found it very odd that, just coincidentally, last night's "TDS" and "Colbert Report" both had a sequence where cut-outs of prominent political and cultural figures overwhelmed the corner-side "news box" and covered up the screen, leaving each respective host a tiny window in which to be seen by the camera.

As my mother would say, "What a coinkydink."

Rob Riggle lives in Kansas? That doesn't make much sense.

Except for the male correspondent parody, I did not like Samantha's segment. Why were they doing a story on that movie anyway?

Venture Brothers this evening!
