2008 Television Critics Association Awards nominees announced

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 3rd 2008 2:28PM

Baldwin, SeinfeldHey, they're not the TV Squad Awards, but the TCAs are pretty cool too, and the nominees have been announced.

There are a lot of the usual suspects on the list, of course (though that doesn't mean they're not worthy - they are), including 30 Rock, The Office, Friday Night Lights, and The Wire. It's also great to see Mad Men get so many nominations, including Program of the Year, Best Drama, Best New Show, and a Best Individual Achievement nom for star Jon Hamm. It's interesting to see that Mad Men will go up against another AMC show, Breaking Bad, in the Best New Show category.

Lost is well represented, as are John Adams, Flight of the Conchords, and PBS' The War miniseries. As for The Wire, it's not only up for drama and acting awards, it has also been nominated for the Heritage Award, along with M*A*S*H, Saturday Night Live, Sesame Street, and Roots. Interesting to see such a recent show up for a lifetime award next to classics. The awards will be presented on July 19.

Anything missing from these nominations?

I really hope The Wire wins in its categories. Lost is another strong contender, but where is Galactica? It seems to be noticeably absent.

And does anyone actually think Samantha Who? is a decent show? The episodes I've watched have been quite boring.

Michael Emerson was robbed! If they snub him at all the awards shows then I'm gonna be pissed. Benjamin Linus is the best character on tv right now. Maybe the Emmy's will get it right this year.

Sure, nothing's missing 'cept this little show called 'Battlestar Galactica' (ever heard of it?) that seems to get frakked at all times, in all awards, including TV Critics. So I guess RDM and the BSG crew will never get their props ever. Motherfrakkers!

Ray Wise for Reaper is great. Love that man.

Otherwise, I continue to dislike that awards shows only pick certain programs (whether TV or movies) to lavish praise upon. With all the programs on the air, I find it hard to believe only 10 or so are represented. The Closer, Saving Grace (incredible acting by Holly Hunter), Californication, The Tudors. Just sayin, where are they???

Yup, Ray Wise is a scene stealer. He's perfect in that part.

I'm surprised Brian Cranston isn't on the list. His performance in "Breaking Bad" is amazing. Why is it that comic actors often seem to be great dramatic actors?

Great to see "Mad Men" get so many nods, clearly the best series of last season. "Breaking Bad" and "Pushing Daises" are great too, just too bad that the writer's strike affected these two just as they were hitting thier stride.

I'm really happy to Masterpiece: Cranford on the list. What a wonderful series that was!

Yes on Lost and Pushing Daisies! The other nominees are pretty good too.

Too bad the Emmys will probably look nothing like these nominations (with obvious exceptions like John Adams, etc.).
