I don't know why people aren't watching The Mole

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 4th 2008 3:28PM

Jon KelleyIt's only the first episode, but people seem to be avoiding ABC's new edition of The Mole like it was on The CW or something.

The first episode of the show this past Monday at 10pm got a 1.9 rating in the important 18 to 49 demographic. It came in third place in the time slot and lost a lot of the lead-in from The Bachelorette.

I don't understand why viewers don't make this one of the top reality shows on television. I mean, if you love reality television, why don't you watch this show? Is it the time slot? Is it the fact that you have to figure things out on the show yourself? I think this is actually one of the most interesting parts of the show, that it's actually a reality show that you can actually play along with. You don't get that with The Bachelorette or Survivor. It's actually a reality show mixed with a mystery/spy series. It's a TV mystery series, where viewers have to guess who the bad guy is, mixed with a reality competition series. And it has great music and great Amazing Race-like stunts and worldwide locales and is immensely entertaining. Why aren't more people, especially people who watch reality shows, watching The Mole?

The only reason I didn't watch this is simple, it's in the "reality" category. I cannot stress enough how much I HATE HATE HATE reality shows. I will never watch these kinds of shows even if I was paid to. I'd rather watch paint dry.

I watched for first time, because I am an Amazing Race fan, and got the impression I would see more cool places. I liked the show, but didn't love it. First, I hate the name. It sounds like a children's game. Second, the "touch screen" thing was stupid and a waste of time. Third, it felt manipulated. Supposedly I am playing along, but that just can't be, since I see what they choose to show me, not what I would notice on my own. Admit that the only people "playing" are the "players" and show me their thoughts, etc.

I'll keep watching for a while anyway. See if they begin to act as if the viewers aren't stupid. And I wish it had a better name.

"Second, the 'touch screen' thing was stupid and a waste of time."

Wow, I couldn't agree more. I think it speaks to the dumbing-down of the whole show. Are there really people out there who think that TV he's using is a touch screen? It's almost insulting.

" Third, it felt manipulated. Supposedly I am playing along, but that just can't be, since I see what they choose to show me, not what I would notice on my own."

There was a clue to the Mole in the first episode. I watched the show again with my wife last night. She missed it so I guess it really wasn't as obvious as I thought. Now I want to watch next week to see if the same player is identified.

I remember from a previous season that if there is a tie on the quiz, then they eliminate who took longer on the quiz.

If a contestant picks up on who they think the mole is, then they have to try to throw everyone else off. Then they pass all the quizzes through to the final quiz which has 100 questions spanning the entire season. Whoever scores the most on the final quiz wins the game. The beauty of this game is that a coalition or alliance is useless. Also it's not a popularity contest. The person who fails to play the game smart and pay attention gets the boot. I hate other shows where players vote each other off. That's player created drama.

The most fascinating episode is the final episode because they show you how things went behind the scenes. They reveal how the mole plans to sabotage every game and how they succeed. They also reveal the players' strategies and how they scored on each test. It's actually very cool.

I because believe every reality show starts out rough simply there are too many characters. When things are whittled down to a smaller group of players, it'll get better.

I agree that Anderson Cooper was the best host ever. But I'm also thankful that Ahmad Rashad is gone.

I loved the first edition. This edition sucks. The casting is horrible. The production values horrible. The challenges horrible. The host horrible.

I never saw The Mole before this week, but I heard all of the raves about the first few seasons. Being a huge Survivor/Amazing Race fan, I checked it out, and was very disappointed.

The host is boring. The challenges seem idiotic, and straight out of Pirate Master or that other Race-ripoff from a few years ago (Treasure Hunt?). Talk of "coalitions" looks like their avoiding a lawsuit over "alliances." Contestants being "executed" instead of "eliminated/ejected/voted out by the tribe" is just stupid.

I'll give it another chance, however.

I do have one question, though:

How does someone win? Does "Bob" state that "Jane is the Mole" and wins if he is correct? They didn't explain the rules in the premiere (probably assuming that we've all seen it before), so I have no idea how this is going to have its endgame.

And, I'm not sure I'm going to stick around to see it, either.

i also dont fully understand how one gets 'executed'.
let's say someone thinks craig is the mole and answers all the questions indicating such. another person thinks the teacher dude is the mole and answers all questions as such. and neither is the mole, they each got all questions wrong. which one is executed?

likely, let's say 6 people are wrong on who they think the mole is. are the people who say the mole is male based on thinking craig is the mole, safe because the actual mole is the boston dude (another male), and thus they got at least one questions right? as opposed to those who thought a female is the mole and dont get any questions right?

oh, and the challenges stink. the waterfall challenge was just boring, the first dude's raft didnt even come near the money bag, poorly executed.

not being in hd, just shows that abc isnt committed to this show. similar to amazing race, being in exotic locales is perfect reason to be in hd.
