Showtime greenlights The United States of Tara

Toni Collette Showtime is bringing us a new comedy series. They've ordered twelve episodes of The United States of Tara which will star Toni Collette as a wife/mother who suffers from dissociative identity (multiple personality disorder). The half-hour comedy will follow Collette, her husband (played by John Corbett), and their children as Collette copes with her different identities. They never know which age, temperament or even gender Collette will be on any given day.

Oscar-winner Diablo Cody (Juno) wrote the pilot and will continue on as a writer and executive producer. She is joined by executive producers Steven Speilberg, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Alex Junge. The pilot was directed by Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl).

Of the show, Robert Greenblatt, the President of Entertainment for Showtime, says, "What a pleasure to watch Diablo Cody and Toni Collette work together, a combination of inspired writing and acting that raises this show from just a curiosity to a compelling examination of a modern family."

Not sure why this is a comedy series! It was "No Comedy" growing up with a mother that has DID! The writer of this project doesn't seem to know much about DID!

I had first heard about this back at the oscars, when they said Cody and Spielberg were going to be working together, then recently I noticed on IMDB that it was going forward.

Not really in it for the Cody/Spielberg piece of it all, that's merely smoke and mirrors. The real meat of this will come from Colette. I'm excited to see her in this character, as playing someone with DID is typically pretty difficult, because you're not mastering one character, but multiple characters. Cynthia Nixon did it well in SVU this last season, but Toni Colette will blow it out of the park!

I have a feeling this show won't last... It just sounds like too much to me. Besides, Steven Spielberg on something is no guarantee of quality and Diablo Coady needs to prove she can continue to put out high quality work long term. Colette is the main feature of this for me right now.
