Japan: it's the new UK - VIDEOS

by Brett Love, posted Jun 5th 2008 12:01PM

Masquerade (Kasou Taishou)If you've had enough of shows being imported to the US from the UK, maybe some Japanese grown entertainment will work for you. On the heels of ABC's upcoming Wipeout, and Fox's Hole In The Wall, another popular Japanese game show could be crossing the Pacific.

Vin Di Bona Productions, of America's Funniest Home Videos fame, has acquired the rights to Masquerade (Kasou Taishou). The show, which the linked article calls Japan's longest running hit series, finds contestants using costumes, props, and sets to create performances that trick the eye. Sound confusing? I thought so too. There are a couple videos of just what that entails after the jump. Having now watched them, it is an interesting concept, but I don't see it being an idea that works as a weekly series. As far as I can tell, it's only done a couple of times a year in Japan. That sounds much more reasonable to me. Of course, I never would have guessed that dad getting hit in the nuts with a Wiffle ball bat would still be working after 19 years either.

I currently live in Japan and I have watched this variety show a few times. I have also watched "Human Tetris" and hundreds of other shows. The television programming here is so very funny and completely outrageous. When I explain to my friends back home what some of the shows are about, they don't believe me. A lot of the variety shows are centered around the TV "personalities" and how much the hosts or the other guests can humiliate them to the point of tears or just continuously beat them down..its very funny and nothing I've ever seen on American television.

Kasou Taishou is a pretty amazing show. The performances the groups put on are pretty good. The winner is usually a group with an adorable kid who everyone voting loves. I hope the States import some of the TV programs here. I think it would more entertaining than some of the new reality shows I've heard about.

I was in Japan a few years ago and saw a show where this guy had to drive a bus through an elaborate obstacle course and park it at full speed by screeching to a halt into a rectangle-shaped spot outlined with traffic cones with eggs on top. Needless to say, the point was to avoid knocking off the eggs. He succeeded. Quite exhilarating.

I've loved the Matrix video for ages as well - when I saw the screengrab of it here I got excied because I havn't watched it for probably three years. If it's all as entertaining as that, then I'm glad!

Why not? Hollywood Horror Movies have been screwing up Asian Horror Movies for quite some time now.

Oh baby. Matrix Ping Pong is my all-time favorite internet video and has been for years. I saw that show last year on a plane to Japan and was consistently amazed. If they can bottle just a fraction of the creativity seen on the original, they got a hit on their hands.
