Real stories behind Deadliest Catch

by Kristin Sample, posted Jun 11th 2008 8:24AM
Deadliest Catch On Tuesday , June 17th at 10 p.m. an all new season of After the Catch will premiere. This five-part series, airing each week after Deadliest Catch, will look deeper into the most dangerous jobs and people who do them. One of these behind-the-scenes looks will feature Captain Phil Harris and Gloucester's legendary fishermen. The captain will sit down with Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs for an interview. Rowe will also talk to the crew, author Spike Walker and Dutch Harbor bartender Lisa Roberts for the inside scoop on what life is really like in the port town.

Captain Phil Harris will open up to Rowe about the health problem that cut this fishing season short. Apparently, while out at sea, Phil was thrown from his bunk when the boat took a massive wave. He then coughed up blood and had trouble breathing. The weather was so bad, however, that the Coast Guard could not evacuate Phil. When he got back to port, the captain's diagnosis was serious enough to keep him off the boat for the rest of the fishing season.

The episode featuring Phil's terrifying ordeal will air on June 24th at 9 p.m. on The Discovery Channel. Harris's interview with Rowe will air July 15th at 10 p.m.

In a scene to be shown later this season, a monster wave pummeled his boat in January, causing him to fall out of his bunk. He punctured a lung and broke his ribs. But his condition worsened after a blood clot dislodged from his leg and traveled to his heart.

Harris almost died from a pulmonary aneurysm, and the remains of the clot are still life-threatening.

"I'm eating massive amounts of medicine" to break down the clot, he says. "I take them every day and pray."

I enjoyed watching this companion series last season. But I have the same question. Why are they airing it after Deadliest Catch instead of having it replace it in it's time slot after the season is over. That would make sense to me.

..."One of these behind-the-scenes looks will feature Captain Phil Harris and Gloucester's legendary fishermen..."

Don't you mean Dutch Harbor and not Gloucester?

How scary for Phil! It is obvious for me watching through the tv that Phil has let his health go down the toilet. The smokes and red bulls with hours of sitting are the perfect combination for a heart attack (which is almost the same scenario as my FIL who died at 59) and now that you are reporting that he is coughing up blood - one can't help but wonder if he has developed lung cancer or had a pulmonary embolism.

Whatever the case, I hope he gets better and takes better care of himself. I love his attitude and ability to play jokes and take them as well.
