Soap Operas' Strangest Plot Twists

by AOL TV Staff, posted Jun 18th 2008 2:19PM
Deirdre HallEvil clones, friendly vampires, secret islands and much, much more.

When something's overly dramatic, we call it a soap opera.

And no wonder -- only in daytime serials do we find such plot twists as people we thought were dead being held captive on islands (that's actually happened more than once), characters coming back from heaven, comatose patients astrally projecting themselves.

We're not making any of these up -- these are our favorite crazy, wacko soap opera story lines.

'AMC' uber-diva Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) had daytime TV's first legalized abortion in '73. The real shocker came in '05 when Erica's hunky son Josh (Colin Egglesfield) showed up. Writers revealed that a doc had swiped her embryo! Bad news: classic storyline altered. Good news: Erica gets another Mother's Day gift.

Saintly Kim Hughes (Kathryn Hays) went on trial for killing stalker/kidnapper Douglas Cummings (John Wesley Shipp) because she thought her mentally fragile step-daughter/niece Frannie (Julianne Moore) was guilty. As Kim testified, Frannie recalled the truth -- it was evil Marsha (Giulia Pagano) who did Doug in.

Stephanie (Susan Flannery) had a secret: Her comatose daughter, Angela, who everyone thought was dead, was alive in a home in Santa Monica. Too bad Stephanie was being suckered. "Angela" (Judith Borne) was really an imposter who went on to blackmail the matriarch with the knowledge that one of her sons had shot the other.

She was bold. She was beautiful. She was dead. Well, actually, Taylor Forrester (Hunter Tylo) was alive. Despite an open casket in 2002 (the corpse was a dummy), she was really in Morocco with stalker Prince Omar (Kabir Bedi). Taylor returned in '05 -- just in time for the real funeral of a Forrester family housekeeper.

When word of Crystal Chappell's exit from 'Days of Our Lives' got out, many fans feared her character Carly was going to die after nemesis Vivian (Louise Sorel) buried her alive. Ratings soared as viewers anxiously tuned in to see villainous Lawrence (Michael Sabatino) dig her up just in time -- whew!

Marlena (Deidre Hall) succumbed to Satan (yikes!). The devil possessed the kind-hearted shrink, forcing her to commit evil deeds. Luckily for us all, ex-mother-in-law Caroline (Peggy McCay), true love John (Drake Hogestyn) and Father Francis (Eric Christmas) teamed up to drive the demon away.

When 'Days' characters started dropping like flies, everyone was shocked to learn that the Salem Serial Killer was saintly Marlena (Deidre Hall). It had to be her evil twin Hattie (also played by Hall) or maybe she'd been possessed again? Nah. Turns out the point was moot anyway, since all the victims were alive and well on an island. The "killings" were a hoax.

'General Hospital': He's Mister Ten Below (1981)

'General Hospital' switched from the world of medicine to the realm of science fiction when Luke (Anthony Geary), Laura (Genie Francis) and Robert (Tristan Rogers) teamed up to bring down evil Mikkos Cassadine. The madman used a formula inside the coveted Ice Princess diamond to freeze 'Port Charles' and control the world.

The mysterious Mr. Craig was a terrorist who held several hostages at the Metro Court Hotel, shot HIV positive Robin and caused Alan's fatal heart attack in 2007. Bad guys are nothing new to soaps, but Mr. Craig turned out to be Jerry Jacks (Sebastian Roche), whom viewers knew as a cad -- but not a mastermind criminal killer.

Viewers thought Reva (Kim Zimmer) was dead for sure in 1995 after the presumed dead character began appearing as a ghost to husband Josh (Robert Newman) and his new girlfriend Annie (Cynthia Watros). In reality, Reva was alive. She was in a coma and had projected an astral image of herself.

'Guiding Light': Send in the Clone (1998)

Michael (Peter Hermann) cloned Reva (Kim Zimmer) after he and Josh (Robert Newman) believed Reva had died in a plane crash. After an alive Reva returned to Springfield, her clone (aka Dolly) locked her up faster than you could say Eva Grubb. Later, Dolly died in Reva's arms.

Phillip (Grant Aleksander) had racked up so many enemies the suspect list of his killer read like a Who's Who of Springfield. The murderer turned out to be nobody. Alan (Ron Raines) had taken Phillip from Cedars hospital and kept him in a secret wing of the Spaulding mansion.

Viki (Erika Slezak) proved the soap opera's title wrong by dying and making a round trip to heaven. This July, Viki reportedly will repeat the spiritual journey by visiting more deceased loved ones in the great beyond including Asa (Phil Carey), Megan (Erin Torpey) and Ben (Mark Derwin).

Forget about crossing over to 'Port Charles' or Pine Valley. Viki (Erika Slezak) journeyed to the futuristic city of Eterna, which was created by her ex-lover Roger Gordon's (Larry Pine) father. Viki and her loved ones (dressed in 'Space: 1999' hand-me-downs) nearly died as Eterna collapsed.

Tabitha (Juliet Mills) was a witch, and she used her magic to animate her doll Timmy (Josh Ryan Evans). But wait, it gets better: During Christmas, the Angel Girl (Chea Courtney) granted Timmy's wish and made him a real live boy. Timmy was like Pinocchio, minus the growing nose.

Kay (Deanna Wright) brought villainy to a new level by using a book of spells to literally put romantic rival Charity (Molly Stanton) on ice. The spell also created Zombie Charity (also Stanton), who brought havoc to the real Charity's fiancé Miguel (Jesse Metcalfe) by flirting with other men.

You can't get more shocking than this: Julian (Ben Masters) impregnated his own hermaphrodite offspring Vincent (Phillip Jeanmarie), who gave birth to a healthy baby boy in 2008. This outrageously over-the-top twist has made the Crane patriarch daytime's most controversial (and likely only) father/grandfather.

'Port Charles': He Sucked ... in a Good Way (2001)

Hoping to stop its ratings from hemorrhaging, 'Port Charles,' a spin-off of 'General Hospital', went gothic and introduced charismatic vampire Caleb Morley (Michael Easton). Like 'Dark Shadows'' Barnabas, Caleb was a fan fave -- but he couldn't save the show. Easton remained a cast member until the soap's cancellation in 2003.

'Ryan's Hope': The King Is Not Dead (1980)

'Ryan's Hope' seemed hopeless when Congo the gorilla (Donald Van Horn) kidnapped Delia (Randall Edwards) and carried her up to the Delacorte Theater. The ape nearly killed her, but Delia lived to tell the tale. It was the fans who died a little -- they couldn't believe their beloved reality-based soap had turned into 'King Kong.'

'Santa Barbara': The Son Also Rises (1985)

In one of soaps' most complicated whodunits, Sophia Capwell (Judith McConnell) was revealed to be her "son" Channing Jr.'s (Robert Wilson) killer! But he wasn't even her true offspring -- luckily(!) the real Channing was switched at birth by his paternal grandma Minx (Dame Judith Anderson).

David Kimble (Michael Corbett) threatened to kill a plastic surgeon unless he made him look like David Hasselhoff. But the joke was on Kimble: After the bandages came off, the horrified cad discovered that he looked the same -- except that the word "KILLER" had been carved onto his forehead.

'Y&R' celebrated its 25th anniversary by re-marrying lovers Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) and Victor (Eric Braeden) in a quickie ceremony. But -- this being a soap -- it was no ordinary wedding. Victor dumped bride Diane (Alex Donnelley) to tie the knot with Nikki, who he thought was dying. Whoops! She lived. Scorned Diane quickly hired a lawyer.
