Bravo conjures up more Housewives, this time from Atlanta
Has Bravo gone to the well once too much? It sure seems that way. Hot on the success of The Real Housewives of New York City, which was inspired by The Real Housewives of Orange County, Bravo is now rolling out The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Now, listen, I've watched the first two series; I admit that they are addictive. And they're convenient because Bravo re-airs them again and again, but come on! This is like Coffee-Mate coming up with all these flavored creamers. Do we really need so many creamers?
And let me be just a little cynical here and note that unlike the Orange County and New York incarnations, The Real Housewives of Atlanta is the only one with women of color. It's like the California version was comprised of country club types, the Big Apple had a Kosher connection, and Atlanta's going to celebrate diversity.
According to Bravo, these Atlanta women are socialites, too, a key ingredient to enter the Real Housewives sisterhood. One is married to an NBA player (Eric Snow of the Cleveland Cavaliers), another is an entrepreneur, one is an aspiring recording artist. Bravo will air a preview of the series on Wednesday, July 30 at midnight.
I'll probably tune in and give it a try, but I think it would behoove Bravo to start branching out a bit, and I don't mean in the same reality genre. One reason a show like Flipping Out works for me is that it's about a really interesting character. It wouldn't work with just any real estate flipper. The secret isn't in the title, it's in the characters.
