So You Think You Can Dance: Top 14 Revealed

by Kristin Sample, posted Jun 27th 2008 10:08AM
Jessica and Will do disco. (S04E11) It's time to find out who our top fourteen dancers are. I think after Wednesday night's performances, everyone knew who would be in the bottom three couples. But, it's all about the solos. Let's find out how they did.

The Opening Number

"The Dance" by Charlotte Martin (choreographed by Mia Michaels)

I know some of you readers love her pieces, but I disliked this opening. It paled in comparison to Shane's opening last week and Wade's the week before that. I seldom enjoy Mia's routines though. The last one I really liked was with Danny and Lauren last season; it was a piece Mia had done for Celine's A New Day show in Vegas. It was intense and romantic.

Here's what I liked about the piece. I loved how they all danced in unison for more than two counts of eight. For some reason, we don't see that much dancing in unison on the show anymore. We see a lot of tricks and interesting partnering but not as much pure choreography where all the dancers have to do is stay in sync. I also thought the concept was interesting -- all of them looking like little marionettes. Chelsea doing bourees with that umbrella over her head was great.

Here's what was completely ridiculous. The poles. The screaming. The making Comfort suck her thumb on stage and act like a toddler. Poor Comfort. That reminded me of last season when Wade made Lacey and Sabra dance around with red scarves in their mouths.

The Guest Performers

Quest, "The Best Dance Crew in America" performed to "Chemical Calisthenics" by Blackalicious featuring Cut Chemist. The group, which contained SYTYCD finalists Dominic, Hok, and Ryan, is not to be confused with America's Best Dance Crew's last season winner, the JabbawookeZ. You may remember I caught up with Dominic and Hok and they talked about how they would be trying out for the MTV show next season.

Their routine was great. I think they are going to go far on ABDC next summer. It was funny and innovative. I don't remember Dominic being that fun to watch. Remember how he did his solo a few times last season and it just got stale? I do have one question though. What's with the falling down to end a piece? The whole "we all fall down" ending is overused.

Oh, and Jordin Sparks performed. She was good, but I really don't care for the guest performers on this show. Call me when they get Britney. One thing: who put her in that dress? She looked like a bridesmaid. And it didn't compliment her body.

The Solos

Chelsea danced to "A Song for You by Donny Hathaway. It was good but after she finished, I wasn't sure if it was good enough to stay. The three consecutive leaps in attitude were a bit of waste of time when you only have thirty seconds to show off. However, her fan kicks (one with a flexed foot and then one with pointed foot and a bit of a lay out) were beautiful.

Thayne danced to "Always" by Bon Jovi. And then Cat gave us the line of the night, "When the chips are down, bring out a bit of the Jovi." Truer words were ne'er spoken. But let's talk about his dance. I felt like he didn't really plan it though. Thayne even ran the wrong way at one point making his leap off the stairs look even more awkward.

Comfort danced to "Just Fine" by Mary J. Blige. She looked great -- her outfit was perfect. I love watching her dance in her own style. She has such a swagger. I really wish Shane Sparks was still choreographing for the couples because his style would be a perfect match for Comfort. However, that's not what the show is about. SYTYCD means to find the best dancer, with the most personality and the most versatility.

Chris danced to "After Tonight" by Joshua Nozuka. This was good, but not as good as his solo last week. I know some people are over Chris, but I love him. I can't believe that Nigel was worried about his personality. I find him so accessible and likable. All the work in forced arch was different, I thought. And his en dedans pirouette into an attitude turn (which I think was on demi pointe) was awesome. He does need to keep his shoulders down in his turns though.

Chris and ComfortKourtni danced to "Fire Door (Live)" by Ani DeFranco. Wow. That was excellent. Perfectly choreographed. If I had to pick a contemporary dancer to stay and I was just looking at those solos, it would be Kourtni over Chelsea.

Matt danced to "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz. It was good, better than Thayne's but not better than Chris's (I'm partial, I know). I didn't like how he finished though, very sloppy.

And you dancers out there know what I'm talking about. If one more contemporary dancer does a coupe jete en tournant (with the back leg in attitude and a layout), I'm going to puke.

The Eliminations

In a quick execution, Nigel eliminated Chelsea. I'm going to miss her. And, proving that Nigel has a vendetta against Chris, he was eliminated next. That means Thayne will partner with Comfort next week. I'm not happy with those eliminations. What do you think? Did the judges make the right decision?

Were you happy with the eliminations?

I was ecstatic when Chris was eliminated. It only took three weeks, but finally he was gone.
Personally, i didn't REALLY want anyone of the bottom three girls to go home, i would have much rather it was Jessica and Will in the bottom three with Jessica going home but it wasn't lol.
I LOVED the opening routine, i thought it was the best one yet. Personally i didn't enjoy the one last week.
I don't see how anyone can like Chris, to be honest, he tries to hard to have personality that it just comes off as extremely annoying. Ugh.
Anyhoo, i digress, he's gone so yay.

I 100% agree with Jessica's bottom three and who should have gone home. I wanted to see Chelsea and Will dancing together.

I thought two of the bottom three were right. If I had to chose, I would had Comfort and Chris, Chelsea and Thayne, and Jessica and Will - eliminating Jessica and Thayne and pairing Chelsea and Will. I think they would make a great pair.

I am glad Kourtni and Matt are staying for another round.

I think Comfort and Chris are just not good together - maybe their two names were left in the hats when deciding the pairings and Nigel did a "what the hell, put 'em together."

Why is everyone hating on Chelsie? I think she is adorable and a wonderful dancer. The connection between her and Matt is very familiar. I love my brother tremendously. One of the ways we show love is picking on each other, him picking on me more. It is never done will ill intentions.

Great season so far!!

SarahAnn - wow, with friends and family like that, who'd need enemies?! "Oh, they just treat you like crap out of love..."

ShorttSirket, Bas : That's a typical behavior towards siblings, and even with some close friends. Chelsie obviously loves Mark and gets along very well with him to act like that. She said it herself, he's like one of her big brothers, which is why they pick on each other. It's their way to have a good laugh. It's quite obvious they have a strong connection, and if she didn't like me a lot, trust me she wouldn't pick on him like that.

- I absolutely loved the opening number. After a few weak entries, Mia redeemed herself for me.
- Based on the solos, I wanted to get rid of exactly who they did
- Loving this season. Nothing is going to top Season 2 for me, but I love that, after last week's elimination, there is already simply no one I cannot stand.
- I really don't understand the venom some seem to have towards Chelsie. I think she and Mark are both great and work well as a pair. I'm rooting for her to go far.

I thought it should have been Comfort out of the girls. I'm not that impressed with her solo, as she seems to do the same moves over and over. And, I was definitely not impressed with her dances the past 3 weeks. I did hate the Comfort/Chris partnership, but thought Chris should have stayed and Comfort gone home.
As for the guys, I thought Matt and Thayne didn't do very well on their solos, so either one of them should have gone.

And, I actually really like Chelsea and Mark. She has really grown on me as I get her humor. I think she just has that humor that some people don't understand.
