Weeds: The Whole Blah Damn Thing

(S04E03) What a relief! Now that we've ditched the dead weight (sorry, Bubbie) Weeds can finally get down to business. The Agrestic and Ren Mar worlds are slowly coming together, which should please the Doug fans. Some familiar faces are making their way to Nancy's new home, and that could mean trouble for her.

A few of the ghosts of season three appeared in this episode. After hearing Doug mention the Majestic community's outrage over Celia's arrest, I was surprised to see Pam back at Celia's side. In true perv fashion, Doug and Dean were watching Andy's foot fetish porn film. Even "Cankles" Carilli tracked Doug down at his dude suite to confront him about some "insurance discrepancies." While I'm glad that the supporting players of Agrestic/Majestic are popping up from time to time, I wish we could get a hint about Conrad and Heylia's fate. I'm really starting to miss them. Does anyone else think it's strange that Nancy hasn't mentioned them or tried to contact them? Yes, I know that Romany Malco and Tonye Patano are off the show, but it's not like the characters are dead to Nancy.

It only took the Botwins about 24 hours to wrestle with major life-and-death issues; not bad. Andy reduced human existence to a series of blahs in a manner that only he could. The Bubbie dilemma put the Botwins' strange approach to communication on display. The family never got together to discuss Bubbie, instead choosing to break the discussion down into several smaller conversations. There was the guys' talk in the van, Lenny and Shane's man-to-man chat, and Andy and Lenny's argument on the beach. On a side note, Alexander Gould can hold his own with any actor on this show. When it was time to do the actual plug-pulling, however, the Botwins banded together and said goodbye as a family. That has to count for something.

I never thought I'd see the day when Nancy would learn from her mistakes. All she needed was the Jesus-cam and some practical tips from Guillermo. Nancy really did give a poor performance in her test run, didn't she? She didn't even have a name for her fictitious face cream. Kudos to her for taking Guillermo's fashion advice to heart. Who knew that Nancy's most shocking outfit ever would consist of khaki shorts, a cutesy pink top, and a visor? I hope we get to see her in more hilarious ensembles like that. On second thought, it might be overwhelming, kind of like Celia's prison transformation. Perhaps Nancy can find the MILF alternative to J. Crew.

At the moment I'm not terribly impressed with Celia's surveillance skills. The woman had a disposable camera! Couldn't Till have loaned her something more modern? Till must have a pretty weak case against Guillermo if he's tentatively cutting a deal with such an inexperienced informant. Unless Celia got something in writing, this deal might not pan out for her. Will she stick with Till, defect to Nancy's side, or become a double agent?

My favorite lines of the night:

  • " 'Kill me.' What do you think she meant by that? Maybe it was her sled." --Andy
  • Guillermo referring to Nancy's dress from last week as a "technicolor slut suit."
  • "All eyeballs and elbows and ready to play God." --Lenny, on Shane

Next week--Lenny thinks Nancy's a prostitute (wrong show), Celia reports to Till, and Doug turns up in Ren Mar.

Are Till and Celia a serious threat to Nancy?
No. Celia has a disposable camera, for crying out loud.49 (25.1%)
Yes. Nancy's too busy to notice Celia's stakeout.42 (21.5%)
Perhaps, if Celia catches a lucky break.99 (50.8%)
Other5 (2.6%)

The best line was, "Honey, go get a pillow."

I much rather have a new theme song.

The plot isn't boring it's just slow to move, it always is. However the show is still funny, and that's all they need.

And Celia found them too quickly so obviously something will happen.

I guess we get an new logo screen every week now :D.....I like the song variations better, but oh well.

Not a bad episode, but they need to get back to the funny. It used to be like Boston Legal and comi-drama. Now its more drama than comedy. One thing that bothers me is Celia. For one, she is a suspect in a huge drug house operation and the guy lets her out (on parole I guess). I guess the cop has been watching Guiermo (spelling?), because last week it seemed contrived that he just happened to have a picture of Nancy and him. But this week it seemed contrived that Celia finds Nancy. Celia finding out Nancy is in Ren Mar is believable, but how big is Ren Mar? If it is not too big, I guess finding a blue Prius would not be too hard. I guess I should just not worry about it, and just enjoy the ride.

If you guys find the show so boring, why are you watching it? Lack of channels? ;-)

Just to get this right, Hollywood usually doesn't mind slooow-moving TV episodes at all, right? I mean, they don't get nervous if each expensive-to-make episode doesn't get very far or fails to tell a story, right?

I mean, they don't care if viewers lose interest right?

Just kidding.

But as you can tell, there are a lot of fans of the first two seasons of Weeds (I am one of them). This show was smart, clever and quite funny as hell. It was better than any sitcom on regular TV.

But if you look at this season, the producers got rid of two of the funniest characters on the show, Heylia and Conrad. Then they bring in a very unfunny actor, Albert Brooks, and do NOTHING with him (other than have him complain).

In addition, there is very little character development with Andy (the other funny character that's left). There's very little story development with Nancy and Guillermo (sp?) as well.

It really seems as if this show has hit a black hole of ideas. And it really is disappointing to fans of this series.

And I love how some contributors to these types of threads always say "well, don't watch it then." Or "why do you guys watch it?"

Well, I just told you why.

Well, I'm voting for "boring" as well. I'm sorry but I fail to see the "rebirth" this season was supposed to be for the show, with Nancy moving away and everything...

So far, same old uninspired things, see the whole Bubbie plot for instance.

About those last words, and the pillow, I really didn't like it. I know it's meant as a joke, and I love "dark humor" and such, but "puling the plug", letting someone go, and using a pillow are two very different things. And it wasn't even funny.

"Grass grow..." heh. Now THAT'S funny! Good one.

Way funnier than any recent episode of Weeds, that's for sure. Cheers!

It ended with Nancy telling Shane to fetch her a pillow.

I didn't think they actually brought Bubbie's story to conclusion. Didn't the episode end with Shane saying, "She's still breathing?!" ?

Sarah--After Shane said that Bubbie was breathing, Nancy asked for a pillow. I'm glad that Bubbie's gone. The poop scene from last week was too much for me.

Unlike grunpy pants above I enjoyed tonight's episode the fleshed out out the grandpa/ family dynamic a bit more and set up some great stuff for the future. I hope Doug's the one that catches Celia sneaking around.

Why yes, I do have a pair of grumpy pants. Just picked up a pair from Albert Brooks, in fact.

At least they're not plaid though.
