So You Think You Can Dance: Top 14 Perform

by Kristin Sample, posted Jul 3rd 2008 8:38AM
Mark and Chelsea(S04E12) I'm filling in for Jason as he had some technical difficulties last night. So let's get right to it. Tabitha and Napoleon were helping out Mary and Nigel at the judges table. And thank goodness for that. I've been waiting to see someone else's hip-hop choreography. Theirs is very hit or miss for me.

We got to see fourteen routines tonight on So You Think You Can Dance as the seven couples appeared twice. I love when they move to this part of the competition. You get to see right away who has the determination, strength, and technical know-how to stay alive on this show.

And it was a night of crazy hair...

THE PERFORMANCES:

Jessica and Will danced a jive, choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie to "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie" from Five Guys Named Moe (Original Broadway Cast). Like Nigel said, the dance was a good opening. Tabitha said that she felt them fighting for their lives. I definitely felt that too. And I felt like Jessica relaxed a little after that trick where she jumps over Will's back and comes flying through his legs back into an upright position. Mary and Nigel both agreed that Jessica still isn't quite up to snuff yet. Will's energy went down a little from last week too. I don't think Jessica is bringing him down though; he was probably just trying to remember all the intricacies of the dance.

Comfort and Thayne danced a Broadway routine by Andy Blankenbuehler to "Cool" from West Side Story. Thank-you Nigel! The choreography was excellent and very much in the vein of Jerome Robbins. But the performance was lackluster. I would have rather watched Chris and Chelsea do that routine. I feel a little cheated.

Kourtni and Matt did a Cecily and Alyssa hip-hop routine to "How Do I Breathe" by Mario. And the slow night just continued. These past two numbers made Jessica and Will's jive look even better. Napoleon pointed out that their performance would not fly well at a hip-hop competition. They looked like fish out of water.

Chelsea and Mark did a jazz routine choreographed by Mandy Moore to "Kiss Kiss" by Holly Vance. It was really good, especially compared to the last three pieces. They did a good job hitting that choreography which was quite fast. Also, kudos to Mandy More for playing to Chelsea's Latin ballroom background with all those hip movements. Their partnering tricks were wacky though. Mark isn't all that strong so a few of the transitions with the lifts were awkward. Mark is much stronger dancing beside Chelsea (as opposed to intertwining and lifting and turning her through the space).

Kherrington and Twitch danced a paso doble by Tony Meredith and Melanie to "Malaguena " by the Brian Setzer '68 Comeback Special. It was, umm, interesting. Nigel thought Kherrington demanded more of Twitch than he gave. Mary conceded it was entertaining, but she didn't think it was that great. Tabitha and Napoleon pointed out that Twitch only came alive halfway through the performance. I'm on the fence for this one. Some parts were good, but Kherrington's facial expressions are starting to irritate me. I don't find her believable. The hair didn't help either (but that's not her fault).

Katee and Joshua performed a contemporary routine by Mia Michaels to "Hometown Glory" by Adele. Why do contemporary dancers always look like they have some serious intestinal pain? That said, I liked this performance. It just exploded about twenty seconds in. Tabatha pointed out that they both had such presence -- even with plain walking, you couldn't take your eyes off them. Mary called it "monumental stillness."

Gev and Courtney danced a hip-hop number by Cecily and Alyssa to "Lights, Camera, Action" by Mr. Cheeks. Tabatha, Napoleon and Mary all agreed that Gev was outdanced by Courtney. I have to agree too. Courtney really held her own out there. Of course, the piece had some parts that could've been better. The energy was very one note. They should have saved something extra for the chorus of the song. Also, I know it's their choreography, but Cecily and Alyssa couldn't have used Gev's breaker tricks a little? Just a little?

Jessica and Will did their second routine to a Mandy More Lyrical Jazz number, "Alone" by Heart. That was excellent. Well executed, believable expression, and amazing energy. Oh, and Heart rocks. I was skeptical about the shirt too (especially after last week's "mud" sheet in Chris and Comfort's Jazz). But it works. He undresses her. He dresses her. He undresses her. You get the picture.

Comfort and Thayne danced their second piece to an Edward Simons Smooth Waltz. The piece was set to "Hov Arek Sarer Jan" by Neew Age Armenia. This piece had some beautiful lifts. Comfort needs to watch her hands when she's up that high being presented to the audience. The piece had a chilling atmosphere and a very "period" feel to it. The judges seemed to agree that this piece was much better than the couple's first one.

Kourtni and Matt did a mambo by Alex Da Silva to "Ban-Con-Tim " by Super All-Star. Mary didn't believe the chemistry. Tabatha wanted more from Matt. Nigel brought up a great point about the routine's difficulty: the choreographer and his partner were shorter than the dancers. This is very true. Smaller people can move through space at a different speed than tall people. Shorter people (obviously) are closer to the ground and have a lower center a gravity. That's why getting Kourtni's long legs to fly around Matt in the beginning lift was probably very tough.

Chelsea and Mark performed their second dance to "It's My Life" by Paul Anka, a foxtrot choreographed for them by Edward Simons. I enjoyed it. Mary Murphy reminded everyone that there were some very hard steps in that routine. I didn't notice -- most of the routine was effortlessly danced.

Twitch and Kherrington danced their second piece to "Dreaming with a Broken Heart " by John Mayer, a contemporary piece by Mia Michaels. Tabatha said, "Awesome Awesome Awesome Awesome." Napoleon said it was storytelling at its best. Mary said Mia Michaels had outdone herself. And Nigel quipped that the routine was about him. I agree with Nigel that they were committed to the characters. I'm not one for contemporary routines and I enjoyed this. The story was there. I just don't like all the harsh movements -- they come off too spazzy for me. They're a little funny even and lend themselves to parody. I liked Mandy More's lyrical choreography much better. This piece was better than Katee and Joshua's routine we saw earlier in the night though. What do you think?

Katee and Joshua did a west coast swing number choreographed by season two winner Benji Schwimmer. The piece was set to "Shake It" by Brother Yusef. The routine got a Mary scream. Nigel pointed out that they played totally different characters with their routines tonight. I was a little scared when they did those cartwheels though. Joshua is too strong for his own good sometimes.

Courtney and Gev did a Broadway routine by Andy Blankenbuehler to "New York, New York," by Bernstein, Comden and Green. The judges raved about it. I adored this number. It had all the exuberance of On The Town. I thoroughly enjoyed it because Courtney and Gev committed to the goofiness and joie de vive of the characters they played. I look forward to seeing more from this choreographer.

BEST OF THE NIGHT
Here's my top three routines...
Jessica and Will's Lyrical Jazz
Chelsea and Mark's jazz
Courtney and Gev's Broadway

WORST OF THE NIGHT

Comfort and Thayne's Broadway
Kourtni and Matt's hip-hop

OUTFIT OF THE NIGHT
Comfort's black and gray dress in the Smooth Waltz was incredibly understated and elegant. But the outfits of the night were the ones Courtney and Gev wore for the Broadway number.

BEST LINE OF THE NIGHT
Okay, there's three...
"If I get my boo now, can I then talk after it?" -- Nigel being snarky to the audience
"Talent is flame and genius is fire. And that was fire. Whaaaooooo." -- Mary on Will and Jessica's Lyrical Jazz piece
"I'm going and I have a feather in my mouth" -- Tabatha on Chelsea in her Foxtrot

OTHER STUFF

  • Katee and Joshua are phenomenal. Nigel said that they are one of the four couples who will make this season outstanding. Wouldn't it be funny if the girl who almost got cut at the last second won the whole show? (I wrote that before Napoleon said it on the show. Just pointing it out.)
  • What was with the hair? Were the stylists on dope this week? Cat had her goldy locks pinned up. Kherrington looked like a blonde version of Bridgitte Neilsen in Red Sonja. Katee looked like a cockatoo.
  • After looking so incredible in that blue half-dress last week, Courtney could not have looked worse in her first costume. Highwaters and Tims? Really?
  • Cat Deeley looked like a really pretty birthday present tonight.
  • Mandy More picks the best songs.
  • Jessica isn't as good as Will. Will is amazing. But but but, Jessica is still excellent. I'm sick of hearing her told she's bringing him down. I think he's even sick of it. I was so pleased when Mary said Jessica did well in her second routine.
  • Did I detect a little Simon / Paula dynamic with Nigel and Mary tonight?
Which couple is definitely in the bottom three?
Chelsea and Mark8 (1.8%)
Kherrington and Twitch7 (1.6%)
Joshua and Katee6 (1.4%)
Kourtni and Matt222 (50.3%)
Will and Jessica14 (3.2%)
Comfort and Thayne149 (33.8%)
11 (2.5%)
Courtney and Gev24 (5.4%)

I posted this on another website, hoping it'll catch on. It's too sad for me to do alone!

I've invented a drinking game: take a shot if a judge DIRECTLY compliments a choreographer (that means pointing out the choreographer in the audience & praising them to their face). Now, if you really want to get wasted, take a drink everytime any judge says "(insert superlative here, ie: brilliant/amazing/wonderful) choreography from (insert choreographer name here)". Guaranteed good times every week! Cheers!

Some people actually think Chelsea and Mark, Katee and Joshua and Twitch and Kherington will be in the bottom three tonight? Maybe I'm a little biased but I couldn't see that happening.
My guesses are:
-Kourtni/Matt
-Comfort/Thayne
-and i'd hope Will/Jessica (Mainly just because I reaaally like Gev/Courtney.)

*sigh* It's getting towards the end of the show where even the really good dancers will find themselves in the bottom three at one point. Ach.

I have to agree, not with the replacement for Jason, but with the comments, for the most part.

Katee and Joshua are excellent every time. He is extraordinary and she trusts him implicitly. That's why they work - she can fly because he is always there. Nigel said it, Joshua's concentration and strength are powerful and that's why this couple is amazing. They give each other power and trust and sex appeal.

Kherrington and Twitch are my second favorites because they light up they stage. They have charisma, both of them. They have sex appeal, excitement, charm, humility and they are brilliant dancers together and apart. Kherrington is going to be a big star - an actress and an a dancer. Twitch can have the tv series of his choice after this. I hope they take acting lessons to be prepared for the offers.

Chelsea and Mark are magical because they transform themselves from dance to dance. They are never predictable and they are courageous and passionate. They have grown as a couple and they are will not let egos drive them down.

Courtney and Gev are the underdogs and they too could have a television series waiting for them. They get better and better and better and it isn't that she's a better dancer than he is. It is that Courtney drives the couple and Gev loves the ride.

Will and Jessica.
I can't bear him. He has no sex appeal, no charm, a boring personality, and he's over dancing everything. His disco last week was nauseating. Even though he is technically a great dancer, he is not being held down by Jessica. He is all into himself. He cares about his partner but when he's actually dancing, he's all for himself. He's a bad actor. Jessica has been put through the mill because they want this guy in the finals. Sad for her, but what Shankman and Nigel said is true, she will go on and she is beautiful and she is a hard worker and a great dancer. She deserves better than Will. Will just needs a mirror.

Last week blew me away.
This week, I was very disappointed in the choreography, almost across the board.

The show this year seems to be feast or famine - you have the really great dancers, like Will, and the people who inspire an "eh" like Thayne. Last night, though, I felt like the biggest disappointment was the freaking costume department. They ruined Katee and Josh's routine for me with the Pepto-Bismal outfits and otherwise, they seemed to just dress everyone in pajamas.

Oh, and the "new" hip-hop choreographers are stinko, in my opinion. They all seem to be choreographing for a video, where there are 30 people instead of 2. The routines wind up making the dancers look stupid.

Nevermind. Basically it said that I think the judges are ridiculous this year. Aren't as harsh when they need to be. Praising those who aren't that impressive. The choreographers routines aren't what they use to be. I mean look on YouTube and see previous works. It's like they watered them down because most of the dancers aren't up to par.

We don't have the variety of dancers either. All the males are hip hop or contemporary. Females aren't that mixed either: 1 ballroom, 1 hip hop, 1 ballerina, 1street latin dancer and the rest are contemporary.

At 10pm you can't remember the routines like you can in previous seasons. Only 3 couples manage to stand out (Joshua/Katee, Mark/ Chelsie H., Twitch/Kherrington). I feel the hip hop routines are lackluster this year and that the Mark/Chelsie hip hop last week looked more contemporary. While I know that Shane Sparks is on ABDC but so is Napoleon. I just don't feel heir routines half the time. Why hasn't Dan Karaty choreographed yet this season? He had some good ones too.

Maybe they needed to mix up the partnering like they did in season 1 when they all picked out of a hat for randomness. Or maybe mix up pairings... like Will and Kourtni. And have Jessica and Matt pair up. Maybe then we will see great things from them.

But if you think of the pairings we have now such as the top 3 couples, some wouldn't be there like they are now.

Joshua/Katee- If Katee had any other partner the public would have voted her out because of the Top 20 reveal with the editing that they did. Joshua was well received by the public.

Mark/Chelsie H.- Most people remember Mark's playing the piano on the floor quirky routine.

Twitch/Kherrington- Twitch had fans from last season that wanted him to succeed this season. In the Top 20 reveal Kherrington was told she was just getting by.

Maybe it's the way I see it. And maybe I am biased in thinking the other seasons were better but so far this year I am not impressed.

Last night's episode, minus only a few moments, left me feeling really bummed about this season. Last season, at the Top 14, everyone mixed well with each other - everyone gave it 110% and had strong dances...I completely enjoyed watching every single couple dance. This year.. not so much. Frankly the only couples worth keeping - Katee/Joshua, Chelsea/Mark, Twitch/Kherrington - in that order.

I am so glad Nigel finally laid it out for Comfort. I thought maybe for a while the judges weren't going to get over her doing something other than hip hop, dancing in high-heeled shoes, and wearing flashy beading.

But I stand by my opinion on it should have been Jessica and Chris eliminated last week and Will and Chelsea paired up. This week, if I had to chose who should be eliminated - I say (sadly, SADLY) - Kourtni and Matt. I have to say I think Matt is bringing down Kourtni. But, then who do you pair Kourtni with if she were to stay. Kourtni has lost some of her light. My second choice for elimination is Jessica and Thayne.

Twitchington, I love the Pasa Doble - it is my favorite ballroom dance. I think Twitch did pretty good. Did you all see that very controlled fan kick over Kherington - toes pointed and everything, I thought they did great! Damn, does Twitch have a nice body!!!

Katee and Josh, I loved their routines. Though I found the West Coast Swing a little slow for my taste.

Chelsie and Mark, I still love them. They are a great couple and they do compliment each other's strengths quite well.

Courtney and Gev, They are cute. I do agree the Court did out hip hop Gev. Gev was very good in the Broadway number. He just looked comfortable in that role.

Those are my top four.

The rest of the dancers are hit or miss for me - very inconsistent. I wanted to love the hell out of Kourtni and Matt, but they just aren't bringing it. Will and Jessica have had mostly sloppy looking routines. Jessica is a great dancer, but Will is way better. Comfort and Thayne, they make a good couple. But Comfort was handled to softly by the judges for too long for me. Thayne, again too competition like but he is a good dancer.

I love SYTYCD - this is a great show - a class act. I know most are annoyed by Mary, but I just love her. She must be one of those love her or hate her kind of people. She and I are polar opposites in personalty. She is just nuts, bubbly, loud and emotional. Maybe that's why I love her.

Will and Chelsea -- OMG, what a great couple. It sucks that Chelsea T. didn't do a better solo last week.

See, I am not a Jessica fan, but I did love the lyrical jazz that Mandy did for them. I loved all the lifts in it. I thought it was very sexy.

I'm tired of the "Kourtni and Matt are so tall" excuse for their poor performance. Twitch and Kherrington are nearly as tall and they put out much better performances.

Personally, I think it's time for Kourtni and Matt to go home.

I didn't think Kherrington was nearly as tall as Kourtni. (Not that I'm trying to make excuses for them -- I think they've had enough chances.)

No offense to the "L Word" crowd, but angry lesbians have to stop dressing Cat. I expected her to grab some pom poms and start screaming "Oh Mikey you're so fine....". Overall I just can't really get into the rountines this year. The past seasons had me on the edge of my seat, totally engrossed, not so much this year. I think my overall favorites are Katy and Joshua, but that Chelsea is a cutie.

Do you think Gev may have held back some in the first dance because his choreographers did nothing to showcase his genre? He seemed like he just wasn't into the first dance.

Definitely a bad hair night for almost everyone. I didn't get Katee's top knot and the dress she had on for the first number made her look like she weighed 30 pounds more. That dance was phenominal though, my personal fav of the night.

I went into last night with high expectations since last week's program was so great. It was a let down. I am expecting to see Kourtni and Matt leave tonight.

I am torn between Katee and Joshua and Chelsie and Mark as my favorite couples to go all the way. That dress Chelsie wore in the foxtrot was ridiculous - Mark disappeared behind a wall of feathers at one point.

I'm glad Nigel told the audience off as well - the judges are there to give an opinion - too bad if you don't agree. And will someone please explain to me the mosh pit arm waving during a DANCE number?
