Strangest Six Feet Under couples
Ruth Fisher and Arthur Martin - Ruth and Arthur's relationship was arguably the most awkward pairing in Six Feet Under history. Apart from the significant age difference, the relationship suffered from a lack of physical intimacy. You can't build a romance on nuzzling and spooning alone; it didn't take long for Ruth to figure that out. Ruth dumped Arthur, and things took a turn for the worse when she suddenly married George Sibley. Arthur showed his jealousy by arguing with George over the origins of the word "formica" and labeling his food. They finally parted ways after the "poo by mail" misunderstanding.
Nate Fisher and Lisa Kimmel Fisher - Technically this couple never broke up, but things didn't end well for Nate and Lisa. Crazy and selfish are not the best recipe for a happy marriage. They would never have married each other if Lisa hadn't gotten pregnant, a truth that was always present in their relationship. Lisa's insecurity and clinginess grew with every passing day. Nate's usual cruelty made it easy for Lisa to continue her affair with her brother-in-law, Hoyt. They agreed to making a fresh start with their marriage in "The Opening," but never had a chance to live up to their agreement. Lisa left to visit her sister and never returned, presumably murdered by Hoyt.
Claire Fisher and Russell Corwin - Claire didn't find a decent guy until the very end of Six Feet Under. She spent most of the show's five seasons in a series of disastrous relationships. She probably should have trusted her instincts about Russell's sexuality and left him alone, but Claire was a glutton for punishment. Russell slept with Olivier Castro-Stahl (while Claire was off doing Olivier's bidding, no less) and weakly lied about it, only to confess a few episodes later. Russell never quite got over Claire, and stayed close to her by dating Anita and involving himself in Claire's art. A dispute over credit for Claire's work ended in a heated argument, which brought Billy into the mix.
Federico Diaz and Sophia (aka Infinity the stripper) - This hookup came out of nowhere. Rico was always a devoted family man, and I was shocked when he got involved with Infinity after visiting a strip club. Sophia took advantage of Rico's mix of guilt and generosity by taking his time, money, and affection. The worst part of the affair was the fact that Rico paid for Sophia's new breast implants; that's just too much. Vanessa found out about Sophia, of course, and Rico's mistake nearly ruined their marriage.
Claire Fisher and Billy Chenowith - You'd think that Claire's psycho radar would have been up after her dealings with Russell, but no such luck. She ran right into Billy's arms, trading one unstable man for another. Part of me (the part that likes doomed relationships) secretly wanted Claire and Billy to get together. If anyone could save Billy, Claire could. His unnatural attraction to Brenda couldn't be ignored, though. You knew the couple wasn't long for this world when Claire had a vision of Billy violently stabbing her. Still, we'll always have the leather pants dance.
Margaret Chenowith and Olivier Castro-Stahl - On paper, their relationship seemed ridiculous, but Margaret and Olivier worked incredibly well on screen. Yes, it's weird to sleep with someone who has also slept with your son, but Margaret was never a slave to social convention. Olivier fit in remarkably well with the Chenowiths. He was self-centered and enjoyed saying outrageous things, but also had a heart. I like to imagine that this couple stayed together, even though the finale didn't reveal Olivier and Margaret's future.
